I just finished helping Börje put up his 1959 Dodge, Custom Royal Convertible, D500 up on Ebay, (well actually I did the work).

Here is the link

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dodge-Other-D-500-1959-dodge-custom-royal-l...

The car has power windows, swingout 6 way power seats, power top, power steering, power brakes.

It is a "True Factory" D500, (383 engine), but it has had the extra carb and manifold added .

If you have questions you may ask here, (if you like), or on Ebay.

Former Aivar car, restored by Bo.

I have a total of 34 1959 Dodge converts in my registry. And yes, it's the only authentic red and white that I have listed.

A beautiful car. Can't wait to see what it goes for.

Amazing car. I too will be curious where it ends up vs the reserve value. This is a car that is hard to value. Have to apply opportunity cost, which can vary greatly. Just because you want one of these cars doesn't mean one is always for sale.

Hey thanks for the "Heads Up" on the missing engine photos. I actually entered 2 engine fotos in Ebay, not sure what happened.
It said we could could enter 24 fotos and we only entered 20, (as I recall).
I hope I can add the engine pictures, tomorrow, Thanks again.
Strange that neither Börje or me noticed the missing engine pictures!!!!!
That's what happens when one (or maybe even two)?, get old, ya thinks?

The car was built as a Real D500, but with (only) a single 4-barrel carburetor in/on it; not a Super D500 model.

Colors/trim are correct, but it had a white top, OEM.

Here's the description of the car that Börje wrote for the car, (well, more than likely his wife, Mary, wrote it.
This is how it is posted on Ebay.

"Up for sale is the holy grail of Dodge, a 1959 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer D 500 convertible. This was Dodge’s top of the line in 1959, with a production of 984 Custom Royal Convertibles and 1840 of the Coronet.

In the world today there are less than 30 left, 11 or 12 in the USA and the rest in Europe, 15 in Sweden. There are eight painted white and red, 6 in Sweden, 2 in the USA.
My Dodge is the only one left in the world, factory white and red. So folks, this is one very rare Custom Royal. She is now in the Super D configuration that was added by the owner before me.

This Dodge is very well documented, it is in three Mopar books about Mopar cars and numerous magazines. All information will be provided to the buyer of this Dodge. Needless to say, here is a very rare opportunity to acquire something that very few people have had a chance to own.

Hope the photos give you an idea of the quality of this car. Even the biggest car collector in the world, The Sultan of Burni
doesn’t have one, or any other sheik for that matter.

She is not totally original. She has a canvas convertible top and has gloss black paint instead of semi gloss. So here is your chance to buy something that not many have ever even seen. She steals the show every time I take her out.

Even though it is almost 20 years since the total frame off resto, she still looks very good and runs super sweet. There are a few small paint chips, some of the chrome could be better. I will not be adding any more photos. This is a serious car for a serious car collector and needs to be seen in person.

This car will only be sold person to person, so scammers don’t need to reply and I don’t need any help selling the car. My intent is not to waste your time or mine. The car is located in Southern California, please call if you need more info."

Cool stuff.
Wonder what the final price is.

Why is the mufflershop guy wearing a box over his head?
Can he install an exhaust blindly, or is he just too ugly for a photo?

Just a safety precaution on Börje's part.
With soooo many "Mouth Pieces" looking for trouble (and Money), Börje thought it best to blank out any faces.

So now the top bid (reserve not met) for Borje's car is getting close to the progressively-reduced asking price for this car

http://www.ebay.com/itm/390938910767?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2661&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Both cars are quite rare and I think Borje's car is more "correct" than the 1958 (although both have been altered to some degree).

It is interesting to note at one point in time, the 1958 actually traded hands for $220,000 +/- which Borje might be thrilled to get.

However, at this point in time, the 1958 has fallen to a level where the 1959 will not meet reserve.

All this to illustrate how fickle the market is.  Duh!

I think the 59's just have a bigger buying base. VERY similar to 1970 vs 71 cuda's. The cuda's are almost identical, but a 71 will always bring a premium. I think these cars are no different. A 58 and 59 on equal restoration terms, a 59 dodge is going to bring a premium. How much, no idea.

I came VERY close to a trade + cash for that 58. I have not put eyes on it yet. If it is still there mid December, I might fly up to look at it. It's right by the St Louis airport. I figure something has to be wrong with it that isn't being shown/shared in the pics.

Right now, I agree. It seems like back in the 1980s, if it wasn't a 1957 Dodge - nobody looked twice at it. The 1958 was an also-ran and the 1959 was a Pariah!

I am surprised that outfit isn't sending you e-mails every day if you got close to a deal on that car! Desperation may set in soon.

There are some places that hold fast to a price. We were 7k apart. I keep looking at that 59. I'm thinking of dumping my 300D, 61 imperial and making a run at this 59 :). Will see where the auction goes.

The 58 that was on eBay. I watch it every time it's on, and I noticed the last time it was on the auction ended early, not sold on there, who knows....

It seems like lot of people today don't care for OEM for whatever car in particular. As long as it looks OE. It's all about presentation today.

" I keep looking at that 59. I'm thinking of dumping my 300D, 61 imperial and making a run at this 59 :). "

Well, having both a 59 Dodge Convertible, (alto not the "Trailer Queen), Börje's is, and a 1958 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible,
There is "No Way", I would trade a Chrysler Convertible with a 392 Hemi, for a convertible Dodge.
The Dodge is "fun to drive" with it's 440 engine and 476 hp, but there is just "Something" about the Chrysler and it's
392 Hemi, that really gets to me.

Now if it were a "Non Convertible" Chrysler, versus a 59 convertible Dodge, YEA then that would be a "Tuffie" for me
as to which one I would keep, (should I only be able to keep one)!, but I would probably go with the convertible.

Fortunately, (at least at this point in time), I can and will keep and drive both cars.

Neither is a Trailer Queen, and if you lived near me, You would see both cars on the road , A LOT!!!!!!

I hope "Soon" you will be able to realize your dream to have a 59 Dodge Convertible, albeit one
that is not sooooo expensive that one is afraid to drive it!!!!!!

I will never be afraid to drive a car I own. Everything I have gets driven. Drove 3 cars to carlisle this year, 1000 miles round trip. In total as a family, we put 40k miles a year on old cars.

This is WAY off topic, but doesn't it seem a whole lot strange that humans are still playing 19th century
land-grab logic in their political outlook ? Do we (as humans) ever learn ? What does Russia need another
acre of land for ? How much is "enough" ? It seems human greed for holding title to the ENTIRE sh!t pile
or power knows no bounds.

With it's over-the-top styling and convertible x D500 status, would you expect anything less ? 59 Dodges
aren't MY cup of meat, but they are arguably THE single most popular Forward Look car ever built ... at least

I want to say '56? After that I believe they were strictly a dealer installed option.

As to the '59 Dodge being the most desired FL of converts, would probably agree, based on it's apparent popularity, and maybe also the most pricey FL convert, with the exception of 300C/D, or any fuelie convert, IF you could ever find one!

I only know of 2 58 Dodge CRL convertibles that have been offered for sale publicly except for mine in the last many years. One was offered for $140k in 2010 (it sold) and the other was bid up to $170k at auction, 2014.

I'm somewhat surprised the car did not exceed the price of "Car Jocks" former car, which I believe went for about 150 grand.

It was born a true red & white Custom Royal D500 (but converted to a "Super D500"), (twin 4 barrel carbs), whereas Carjock's former car was born a 361 and the
383 engine and decals were installed.

Borje's engine had the "factory correct look", red valve covers with the D500 emblems, and the correct gold air cleaners, where as Carjock's valve covers and air cleaners were chrome.

I think part of the problem with the low bids had to do with the description of the car. I have looked at the car, and the chrome and paint look perfect to me, I would have to
get out my "Magnifying glass" to see any chips in the paint, or problems with the chrome. I told him not to mention those in the description on ebay, but He could mention it to
any serious buyers with inquiries, and take detailed pictures for the potential buyer. (To Me), the way the car was described on Ebay, is one would "Assume" that the car would
need new paint and new chrome~~~which, (at least to me) is not the case. Börje said He wanted to be "Completely honest" about the description of the car.
As I recall, the car has only be driven less than 10,000 miles since it's restoration.

Now I could be wrong about why the car did not bring higher offers, (maybe it's just "The Market"), right now. but as I mentioned, were I a potential buyer, (from the description),
I would have had to budget in a paint and chrome job.

So what do you all think contributed to the low bids?

It is the end of the year as well. Sell this car in March/April/May and you might have a totally different results. A lot of people delay a lot of bills to the end of the year. Now most that can afford a car like this, it might not matter. There is a group that could come close to affording this that might stretch things if they were getting a tax refund or if we're going into summer. I absolutely love the car and one day I will own one, just won't be today

In spite of all the bellyachin' we hear to the contrary, people (particularly the over-monied set, a la "Barrett-Jackson")
really like all the sales puffery and over-the-top descriptions of total awesomeness. You can tell this by what sells and
to whom. Give an very real and honest description and those guys all hold back. Go figure.

I think stuff like this is very telling about what constitutes a baseline logic/mentality for the "average bear", much like
how so many respond to red paint, dual quad intake systems, dumping every conceivable option on a car, or even goofy,
ill-fitting chrome aftermarket exhaust tips. I can't explain it, but people just eat that sh!t up !

Take a flawlessly original 59 CRL ragtop, painted tan and dark brown, equipped with 383 and 4bbl, swivel buckets, power
windows, dog dish hubcaps, and put it up against a weathered restoration example of pink or red that has had all the cliche
gee-gaw added like the meat grinder wheelcovers, D500 tags, and dual quads, and see which one gets all the attention/money
thrown at it ! That's just the way this crowd works.

Personally, the unusual car would be the one that pulls me over to have a look, but most guys would be over at the macho
mobile getting their testosterone levels worked up. Afterall, that is largely what this is about. Few are into this game for
the history or contextual historical representation of the car/s or era. They are into it for their own personal nostalgia of
a time as seen through their own paradigm of (typically) a kid who watched the fin era unfold or saw a movie and fell in
love with the "romance".

Add in the B-J factor of money men flexing their wallets for macho points, and all sense for honest descriptions is a pointless
exercise.

I don't think the 'completely honest' description hurt the sale of the car at all. As you said, Gary, it's 'the market'. Cars just aren't selling. Rich folks are pouring their money into art and especially real estate, as the housing market rebounds. Now, you'll find an occasional exception, like Austin's 60 Ply 4dr HT or a 57 Desoto convert selling for stupid money. But these are 'one offs'. Projects aren't selling, and even this beautiful car isn't getting the offers that it should. If Börje really needs to sell the car, then he may have to accept a lower-than-expected price. If he's selling just because he wants to buy something else, then it's best that he hold onto it until the market rebounds, whenever that will be.

Thanks for the inputs.

Börje bought the car as an "Investment", and is planning to sell it as part of his "Retirement Stash".

He does not need to sell it "Straightaway"! I also helped him put his 58 Olds 98 Hardtop up on Ebay
and it did better than I expected, it went to 80 Grand, but I must confess, I'm not a fan of the 58 Olds
and Börje sold a 58 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible, that Aivar also had, to buy that Olds, which, (to me)
was a "Crazy thing to do".

I still drive all 3 of my cars a lot, the 58 Chrysler, 59 Dodge and the 64 Dodge I bought brand new
as a 21 year old kid. But I bought them to drive them and I will continue to do so as long as
"Time is kind to me"!!!!

Interesting! I do not follow 1959 prices as much as you fellows do, but I thought $130,200 seems like a lot of money for a Dodge convertible, albeit a D-500 converted to a Super D-500 (he even has the correct exhaust manifold). I did not realize Jim Helm's sold for $150,000! Of course, that may have been before the Great Recession when every Tom, Dick, and Harry could get a huge loan. Those days are gone.

Duh!

I called about this car today, it sold last month finally. Part of me is upset, part of me is happy. I wanted to make a move on that 58 in December if they were still sitting on it. Snooze you lose. I assume it traded for around 90 to get it out of there.

=================================================================

While all finned ragtops have steadily climbed in asking price to cubic dollar levels, the 300 C, D, and F
seem to lead the pack in consistently high sales prices. The occasional "other" Forward Look convertible
spikes up high, but I would submit that the 59 Dodge and 60 Polara are one of the few non-300 ragtops
to ALWAYS have 1000 buyers for every one still known to survive, and thusly, prices are more of a case
of what does the buyer want to ask, as opposed to "Price Reduced for Quick Sale" like it might if it were
another body style.

I don't even try to speculate on what any of this stuff is "worth" anymore. Too many crazies with over-
stuffed resources randomly pushing things to absurd levels. Frankly, I thought this car would go 50K
higher and not meet reserve. When will another one come available ? I have no doubts it will sell, and
sell high. Now that people know it is there and not locked up with a Not For Sale sign on it, someone will
try to beat the owner over the head with a money stick.

I agree with Doc. I think the car can reach a higher number. It needs a much better presentation. You're trying to sell a 150k car, not at 15k car. Time of year as well. In March/April, proper pictures and this thing hits a big number

wow! that has to represent a nasty little "cash bath" for at least one or two owners since the halcyon days when it sold for $240,000!
