Location: bishop, ca | And, on the P/S fluid, you can drain the stuff in about 4 seconds, with the return line disconnected from the pump and with the engine running....be sure
to try to catch as much of the forcefully-spent fluid in a bucket, as possible.
With the P/S system now flushed, you can pour the honey-consistency Lucas-brand Power Steering lubricant/Stop Leak into the reservoir, to
lubricate the system, but also to prevent minor leakages from it, and to increase the overall steering response/feel, thru the steering wheel.

Location: Omaha, NE | Thanks for your responses. The transmission is rebuilt, but the power steering unit and pump came from parts cars. Flushing the system sounds like a good idea. Do I use all Lucas fluid or a mix of it and Dexron III? |

Location: bishop, ca | The Lucas stuff is for power steering pumps, but they may also formulate trannie fluid (doubt it, tho)
I've just filled the P/S reservoir with Lucas Stop Leak, full-strength; it pours out like honey.
I went over to the Dark Side & was cajoled into installing 'Ford' Type F trannie fluid in my car's (built-up) TorqueFlite transmission, several years
ago, to get firm(er) upshifts.
The Type F has worked well, in that overhauled transmission; dunno how well it works in an already worn trannie.
