Location: The Mile High City | The pictures are really great this time. The puffery is starting to kick in now; they have ditched the standard wheel covers and put on a set of 1957 spinners with claims of "factory spinners". Still, this is a really great car - it needs to find an owner instead of a flipper. (01.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 01.jpg (151KB - 43 downloads)

Location: The Mile High City | It really is an amazing car. The image above (must be just after sunset or just before sunrise) really makes the beige and sand colors look rich! The number of images in this auction is outstanding. This is the first time I have seen pictures of the damaged headliner. I wonder if that damage occurred during the detailed cleaning? They talk about replacing the headliner, but I would just keep it. I put in a bid of $15,000 - but I knew it would not meet the reserve.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7205 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | This has got to be one of the nicest looking 4 door Forward Look sedans of all time!! I'd love to own it. Too bad about the headliner, but I'm wondering if the damage was from being damp? The first time this car was put on auction the photos showed mildew all over the door panels, which has obviously been cleaned off now. I'd have the headliner replaced, if it was mine. Notice that the dash pad is in bad shape as well, especially around the speedometer hump. It almost looks as if someone did an amateur re-cover of the dash pad rather than age cracking etc. Edited by imopar380 2014-12-19 6:54 PM

Location: Parts Unknown | I am unclear why anyone would want that bulky, rounded trim. It SO clashes with the jaunty lines that make a 58 Dodge so "58 Dodge" !!! Of all the car lines, Dodge got the "edgiest" styling. The teeth, the bar grille, the truncated saddle fins, the jet tube tail lights. The standard trim was crisp and thin and followed the lines with such synchronicity. The Spring Special trim is disproportionately bulky and just looks like an afterthought. The billboard out back is excessive just for the sake of being excessive ... I just don't see the attraction, especially when the standard fare is so complimentary of the overall shape of the car. I know a lot of people would chrome the whole #@! car because they think 50's = excess chrome. I just see some of Exner's finest products as being that refined balance of "not too much" and the crispness of the lines and that is my attraction to the Forward Look cars in the first place. The SS trim looks like something Ford or GM would have done. And that IS the reality of the matter, ... it was a mid-year response to try and pull some of the people away from otherwise buying an excessively over-trimmed 1958 GM or Ford. Historically correct ... yes. Best design as applied to that canvas ... not so much. Edited by Doctor DeSoto 2014-12-21 3:54 PM

Location: The Mile High City | Eh, dif'rent strokes for dif'rent folks! I think the wide trim really does the saddle two-tone very well, especially as it complements the sweep under the back of the fin. Now, the fin end caps by themselves or the license plat escutcheon by itself provokes some discord to my eye, but together seem to energize the back end a bit. Several 1957 Dodge owners added the escutcheon over the years, but few to none went the extra step with the fin end caps. The little grille emblem is a nice touch to the 1958 grille. Yes, altogether it is a lot of gingerbread; but I like all the spring packages for 1958 - perhaps just because the kick up the rarity a bit in a rare year to begin with - just as they kicked up the desperation a bit at the Chrysler Corporation in a very desperate year. I had not thought of the "GMizing" of the product. I had previously thought Chrysler was rushing to put a fresher look on the year-and-a-half old product line. I am sure there were many factors. The Silver Special was a bit humble. I really like the Chrysler treatment, especially on the basic monotone Saratogas. I like the anodized aluminum trim on the De Sotos.
