Can anyone recommend a good vented gas cap for a 58 Plymouth? My car has a 440 engine with a fuel pump at the block and puller electric fuel pump at gas tank. I' m currently getting a hissing pressurized sound from gas cap after a drive, when I twist the cap off it has a strong burst of air and light mist of gas shooting out, how can I fix this?

Thanks
Mike

Easy way is to drill an 1/8" hole in the gas cap. That will equalize the pressure.

Do I drill the 1/8 hole through the center of the cap all the way through?

Thanks

Just get a new vented cap STANT Part # 10646. Available at Rockauto for less than $5.

why drill a hole when you can do as 57 suggests . if you drill a hole anywhere in the cap to relieve air , when you go around a right hand turn on a full tank fairly
quick/hard , you're going to leak fuel out of that hole . vented caps are made not to leak anything ------------------------------------------later

Anywhere, really. It's all about relieving pressure. Or just buy a new cap as 57Chisler suggested. Even on a full tank, it's unlikely that the fuel will splash all the way up and escape a tiny hole like that. Just don't overfill your tank.

Found the right cap! Looks like I needed Stant# 11646 " anti-surge vented" cap this has a valve that let's air in but not out.

The shop must have put the wrong new cap on, it had Stant #11806 " emission control type" did not specify whether it was vented or not but looked a little different underneath

You replaced the original cap because it was allowing pressure to build in the tank and you replaced it with a cap "that let's air in but not out."?

No, you found the wrong cap. You need to keep the air pressure balanced between the inside and outside of the tank, which is why I suggested a small hole in the original cap. Don't use this cap or you will have problems.

Now here's the new one I put on, has a better center , looks like it breaths better, this cap sounds like it's got a ball bearing inside or something, rattles slightly when you shake the cap in hand

Thoughts?

And this last one throws me off, Stant packaged these two caps with the same part number, I'm confused.

Mispackage or multiple application?

Thanks

Looks like I did get the right cap afterall , according to this by stant, part number 10646 is "carded" in retailers as 11646. So hopefully I got what 57chizler recommended. Take a look at all my pics, please let me know.

Thanks

I think they are the same functionally.  As you found, when you took the cap off there was a rush of "air" and gas mist that came out.  That cap that has the "legs" was made so that when you turned it the regular ears would release but the ears on the legs would still be "caught" so that the rush of air was blocked by the half off cap.   Then you turned the cap more to release those ears and remove it completely. Those legs probably interfer on a few cars so perhaps they make the two versions or perhaps the one with the legs is jsut old stock and they simply don't bother making them anymore.  I can recall back in the 70's (or was it 80's) when the EPA first started mandating ethanol that our fleet cars would build up tremendous pressure in their gas tanks, esp when we drove from HQ up to the mountains.  I think they eventually replaced the original gas caps with ones that would only hold pressure to a few psi and then they would vent.

As long as it says VENTED on the cap or package, then it's good to go.
