The 1956 New Yorker steering wheel is a very complicated design and casting, what with
its simulated ('Euro') wound-thread hand grips.

Does anyone have any history or experience with restoring one of these guys, including the
costs to restore one?

Shop recommendations?

Gracias!

Hi Neil

Mine looks a little bit better. But the white plastic is broken off on some areas - near the metal rings. It could be nice to find a shop. I do not have a clue.

Good luck!

Dieter

Just sent out inquiries to all three places.

Thanks!!

We'll see...

Dieter; your car's steering wheel looks 'greenish', too????

Our cars are 'blue' though.

I've gotten two replies to my steering whel inquiry; here's #1:

Hi Neil, thanks for checking with us.
That wheel is one of the most intricate we do with alot of hand finishing detail. Very nice when it's done though.
We would work with you to pour the exact colors that work for your vehicle using color chips you can look at in your car.
Our price to completely recast in two-color rigid thermo-set urethane is $1600, plus the plating of the trim pieces at cost. Usually the plating is $200-$300 on those wheels.
Return insured shipping is $45 and would be sales tax exempt if mailed outside North Carolina.
All we would need to get you on the schedule is a deposit of $600 and the wheel. When the wheel is ready to ship the balance will be due.
Right now we are quite busy and I would expect that wheel to be complete 4 to 5 months after we receive it.
Our wheels carry a 10 year Warranty against cracking and color change.

Thanks for checking with us.

And, here's #2:

Hi Neil:

The following information applies;

CHRYSLER & IMPERIAL 1955-1956

I remove the 2 chrome thumb rests and all of the old plastic. The rim reinforcing ring is cut and the 2 chrome rings are removed. The 2 thumb rests and the 2 chrome rings are sent out for re-chroming. The re-plated rings are re-installed on the rim reinforcing ring, the frame is placed into an alignment fixture and the rim reinforcing ring is welded. The frame is bead blasted and painted the same color as the new plastic. Through my proprietary process, I cast on a specially formulated thermoset UV stable urethane plastic in the original configuration without loss of the original detail. The urethane does not shrink, crack or turn yellow.

The steering wheel frame is placed into mold #1 where the top half of the rim, both spokes and hub are cast in the original configuration in the appropriate color. The color is incorporated into the urethane plastic, it is uniform throughout and the molded plastic is one complete casting, there are no joints. Upon completion of the curing process, the plastic is heat treated, sanded and polished. The finished product is polished plastic, not a painted wheel.

The steering wheel frame is placed into mold #2 where the bottom half of the rim is molded in the same color. After the curing process is complete, the plastic is again heat treated, sanded and polished.

The steering wheel frame is placed into mold #3 and the right hand grip is cast in the appropriate color. The mold duplicates the original shape which includes the fine line ribbing. After the curing process is complete, the plastic is again heat treated, sanded and polished.

The steering wheel frame is placed into mold #4 where the left hand grip is cast in the same color. After the curing process is complete, the plastic is again heat treated, sanded and polished.

The 2 re-chromed thumb rests are installed and the new plastic is given a final polish.

The cost is $2400.00 with a lifetime warranty. For the continental US, there is an oversize box return shipping charge of $40-60 which includes $2600.00 of insurance. Turn around times vary from 6 to 8 weeks. Call me, 858-271-7374, for current turn around times, shipping information and any other questions.

When comparing my process to others, consider the following;

Are they using a UV stable urethane plastic? Epoxies are not normally UV stable and experience color changes with exposure to sunlight.

Is the steering wheel being recast or are they filling the cracks and painting the wheel?

Are they dipping and coating the wheel and thus covering the cracks and the deteriorated plastic? In this process the original detail is lost and the cross sectional diameter of the rim and spokes become much larger than original. The wheel falls apart from the inside.

Is the casting complete without joints or are they gluing pieces of cast plastic together to form the rim of the wheel and then painting the wheel? Again the original size and detail are lost.

Is the color tint uniform in the new casting with the finished product being polished plastic?

Is the steering wheel recast in the original configuration without loss of detail?

What is the warranty? I provide a lifetime warranty on all my work. If their process is so good, why don’t they provide a lifetime warranty?

Thank you for your inquiry, Dennis

Also this, from Bob:

Neil,

$1645 plus plating of the steering wheel trim pieces at what it cost me. Nothing extra if the chrome is OK as is.
I am not set up to restore the horn ring.

Not being a smart ass here but readng this thread almost reinforces the reasons why most owners or prospective owners would shy away from restoring our cars, I rebuilt my 55 Hemi for less money then a steering wheel resto.
