Yes, the dash lights should dim when you rotate the headlight knob, however the dash lights will only light up when the headlights are powered on. To pull the headlight switch, you must get under the dash and push on the release button for removing the knob and spindle. Push that retainer button and then at the same time pull on the knob and it will pull right out the front. Then you can unscrew the bezel from the dash and remove the entire switch. More than likely the rheostat in your switch is shot or very badly corroded. Since the 60 Dodge does not use fuses ( uses circuit breakers) it can't be a fuse gone.

The Left arrow points to where the knob and spindle are inserted and removed, the center arrow points to the Rheostat, round white ceramic. The right hand arrow points to the release button. Press it in slightly and pull the knob off from the front.

Read Ians post - it's dead on! That said, it's not a easy work, it's crammed and difficult to see. Take Pictures of the electrical Connections as you must pull them all Before you get the switch out.

Once that you removed the knob and shaf, then you'll see the nut that holds the switch to the dash.

it's not a real tough job to remove the switch , just a little time consuming if you've never done it before . first , mark and remove the wires to the switch . next reach up in to the top of the switch
locate the release button with a finger . press the release button while lightly pulling/turning the knob on the front . the knob and shaft should separate from the switch . only thing left to do is to
remove the nut holding the switch to the shaft . if needed and you're doing a restoration removing the dash center/insert makes the process easier , even for a beginner but the key to the whole
process is finding that little button on top of the switch to start the process . after you do it once , you'll see just how easy it is -------------------------------------------------later

So I just got done testing the one from my 1960 phoenix today and I have some tips on bench testing for you folks!

You'll need a 12volt source of any sort. I used a 3amp power supply that I have. This is a nice way of doing things since 3amps should damage anything on the switch. the power supply will go into self protect if there is a short. Optoin 2 is a tiny little 12volt battery of some sort. Second part you need is a lamp socket of some sort, I recommed a 1004 bulb because the load on the panel dimmer is more correct and you'll get a better idea if the dimmer is working. Set the test bulb up so that you have a blade connector on it so that you can plug it into the blades on the switch to be tested.

Connect your positive voltage to the "B" connector on the switch. That's the one with the nut on it. Connect the negative wire to one side of your bulb lash up. It actually doesn't matter how you wire the polarity but this is how it will function on a negative ground car so, it's a just to be sure sort of thing. Now I'll make a list of how the switch should behave when you plug the other end of the bulb into each of the connectors.

the A connector should have 12 volts at any switch position. Thats the one with the metal bar that runs across the switch. It's an accessory jack and is used to power various optional things.

The P connector is the front parking lights. This shoudl only light your test bulb when in the middle possition of the pull out portion of the switch.

The H connector is the head lamp switch. This should only light your test bulb when the switch is fully pulled out.

The R connector is the rear maker light contacts. This should only light up your test bulb in the middle and full out positions. The test bulb should be off when the switch is fully pressed in.

The I connector is for the interior lights. It should light your test bulb in either pull out position and when you twist the knob it should dim the light significantly.
