Veteran Posts: 157 Location: Central New York | Hi All. Might be a dumb question( Iv'e asked a few) But what numbers are needed when registering a forward look car with the DMV ? I have the vehicle number on the driver side door pillar, and I have the data plate on the radiator yoke. what number, or combination of numbers will the DMV accept ? Thanks. Phil.

Regular Posts: 52 Location: Massachusetts | Your car must not have a title? If you have an existing title, you just apply for a new title, at least here in Mass. If you make a mistake copying the number on there, the RMV gets bent out of shape. As far as I know, the serial number on the driver side door jamb is used for a VIN.

Veteran Posts: 157 Location: Central New York | Nope, no title. In the process of obtaining paperwork from the state of Virginia where the car was last registered, but it's a tedious process. That's why I want to make sure I have the correct numbers when or if, the time comes to register it in NY.

Expert Posts: 4034 Location: Connecticut | You must have a bill of sale. Some states also require a title. A safety inspection may also be required. Folks have failed the safety inspection for rust holes in floors and quarter panels. So keep that in mind. Best idea is to go to your state's DMV website and check what they require. Ron

I think you would need proof of ownership, such as an old registration, etc. Otherwise, you could walk into any DMV with a VIN number and claim that a 58 Plymouth that you saw at a car show is yours. I don't think that would fly. Ron

Veteran Posts: 157 Location: Central New York | Thanks for everyone's input. NYS is rigid when it comes to laws, rules and regulations. I've just started the process, and already I've jumped through so many hoops, I feel like a poodle at the Westminster dog show. Right now, a bill of sale from the gentleman that sold it to me is all I have. He's been great in helping me to obtain more paperwork for the car. But again, we're dealing with NYS DMV. I'll get a handle on it. Thanks again to everyone.

If the car is deemed very valuable you might have to post a bond.

The way I understand it is that NY, as here in Alabama, does not require a title on vehicles manufactured before 1973. Just a bill of sale with the VIN, date of sale and sellers name/signature. It dosen't hurt to have a copy of a past regestration in the sellers name either, but not mandatory. Take what paperwork you have to the DMV and ask, It might save you a lot of trouble. Expert Posts: 1348 Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | If you don't have a title, do you have the car in your possesion, so no one else can claim it ot take it? I believe you can pay to have a tiltle search done. IF it is not registered in any state, find a state that will allow you to register it. I traded a beat 1988 VW Fox for a real low milage totally rust free black 64 T-Bird convert. that had no title. I was just going to part it out but was told that if it is not registered anywhere, I could get it registered in Georgia. All I needed was a tracing of the build plate and[I think] $150 and a bill of sale which I just wrote $150 or something and had the guy I traded with sign it. It took a while but I got a Georgia "A" title in my name as the first owner as though it had never been sold. This was a few years ago and maybe it isn't all that easy but look in a Hemmings magazine and there will probably be someone there that can help you. The only thing I worrried about was that the car was in a barn in another state and I was afraid that I might loose it because it wasn't in my possesion. Edited by udoittwo 2015-05-06 8:15 AM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | The DMV is worthless. Don't even try this in Ohio, they just tell you to pound salt or file a claim in court. Check your VIN's here to see if any state even "knows" about your vehicle... If they don't show up here they have dropped out of existence. How do you even file for a lost title if it drops out of existence? This might be a problem if the owners history is gone from Virginia, he can't file for a replacement title or they have to check archives? http://www.vehiclehistory.gov/ http://www.vehiclehistory.gov/nmvtis_states.html Edited by mikes2nd 2015-05-06 10:08 AM

Veteran Posts: 157 Location: Central New York | Those are ideas that I'm working on. Ohio sounds a lot like N.Y. Mike. I have the car tucked away in a garage in an undisclosed location. The gentleman I bought it from is being super nice about this whole thing and has offered to do the legwork for me in Virginia.

Expert Posts: 1739 Location: Alaska | About 10 years ago I used one of those companies advertised in Hemmings to get a title on a 72 sports car. You fill out the paperwork and get a notarized bill of sale from the seller, send it to this service and they do a title search, and send back to you a registration and letter of explanation from one of those states (South Carolina IIRC) that only requires a reg. and bill of sale. The cost was about $150 and it only works on pre 75 cars, I guess you could do-it-yourself if you lived in one of those states. I took it to my DMV and the lady showed it to her supervisor and no problem, a new title. Edited by 58coupe 2015-05-07 9:38 AM
