Expert 5K+ Posts: 7398 Location: northern germany | still traumatized by the demolition of the only remaining 1950s gas station in my area not long ago i decided to take pictures of the few fifties relics that are left around me. there isn't much. went by the deserted gas station a 1000 times and always thought it would be a cool foto background for my car. one day there was a fence around it and i thought they are going to restore it.... then it was gone. i ask you to post pictures of the mid century remains around you along with your fl. this can be as small as a wall ornament, pastel tiles or neons, etc. my 1rst contribution, living in rural germany, is pretty lame, anyway here it is. the rounded concrete canopy, neon, entrance and windows are typical german fifties. Elite Veteran Posts: 1172 Location: Georgia | I second that, Sid. A great idea for a thread. Here are a few photos I have on hand, the first is not quite "mid-century", as it was actually built in the 1930s, but it is the museum at the Ocmulgee National Monument here in Macon, GA. I always thought it was a cool backdrop. Next is an old electric company in downtown Macon. The city is shutting them down, claiming the property for an inner city "improvement". I figured I would stage these photos while I still had the chance! Expert Posts: 1730 Location: Michigan | That was our route 66 trip. We visited many of the usual haunts. Stood on a corner in Winslow Arizona (Eagles fans will know what I am talking about). They have a flat bed Ford there but it's not the right vintage for the forum. Pictured is me and my kids. If you ever get a chance to take a vacation in the states. A road trip along the old Route 66 is fun and a bit adventurous at times. It's no longer a contiguous road, so you have to work at it. Oh and the Caddy picture is there because that's the best use of a Cadillac I have ever seen. Edited by Beltran 2015-05-15 8:45 PM

Location: Parts Unknown | I just love when some relic of the past peeks its head out. Never would have guessed this was hiding under a modern facade, but last year the building got stripped back for yet another remodel and this sign for an old "supermarket" was revealed. This neighborhood would be destroyed in 1957 when the I-90 freeway cleared a 300' right of way just one block to the right. The little store likely struggled on for a few years, but with a freeway replacing the family homes, customers slowly faded to nothing and the place closed up. The bad news is the morons that did the recent remodel felt the need to sandblast the sign off the brick. But I got this shot before they did. Location: Parts Unknown | This sign is awesome and sat derelict for a long time. Before I deployed, the owner told me I could have it, but I was unable to move in time and while in AFG the business sold and the new owners had it put back into working order. I missed my chance, but as long as it stays out there doing its thing, I am happy. (beacon.jpg) Attachments ---------------- beacon.jpg (66KB - 297 downloads)

I don't care much for what houses and furniture looked like back then . I do think the pic submissions should be car related and should have the car of the owner submitting those pic. It will be much more interesting that way . Otherwise it is just another "post card" thread, and we already have that. I have some pics that I need to find, and then will post.........................MO

Elite Veteran Posts: 1172 Location: Georgia | Here are a few more photos, these feature my '61 wagon. The photos of the house were taken in Macon, in a rough neighborhood. The house was owned by an elderly lady who kept it spotless, as you can see. She was skeptical of me taking the photos, but her son and friend who were drinking beer in the carport (at 8:30 am!) assured her I meant no harm. The Bellevue photo was taken right after I had reassembled the wagon after paint, the building located in Macon. Lastly, the Rose Theater is in Forsyth, GA, not quite MCM, but a neat old building nonetheless. I hope these photos fit in with the theme of the thread. Pete yes they do, thanks! even if some is not mcm, it was around when our cars were new. that house with your 61 in front, the stone wall left and right to the door, i love that stuff and its very 50s. what is that called? is there a certain name for it? it reminds me of the house (that unfortunately never existed) in "north by north west" from 1958/59.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7398 Location: northern germany | not far away from me, after i coasted into the driveway the owner came out (living down the street) curious about the engine rumble or earthquake at his place. he seemed to be disgusted about my fascination for this and told me the place is only still in existence since his old man still works there (the guy was about 60....) not visible in the pics the canopy is typical 50s/60s V-shaped and the guy told me he is going to bulldoze it soon. so i guess my car is one of the last that ever coasted into this. would love to own this place, would install an air hose actuated driveway bell.
