Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | After an exhausting two days or driving (long story)..I acquired a really nice finished 361 rebuilt motor for my 1960 Matador that I don't even have yet!!!.LOL. Got it home and realized it was a '62 motor....only 6 bolts on the crank to mount the torque converter...I think I need an 8 bolt!...my question is...can I get a later aluminum Torqueflite to bolt up to it...and will it work with my 60 push buttons on the dash?..Need an expert to chime in! Will post some Picts soon of the car when I get it...the motor looks ready to go, minus carb and water pump!

Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | You can use a 62 Trans. First year for the aluminum torque flite. It's the only year that will work for the conversion for the later 6 bolt crank B and RB engines. It has the push button cable and the e-brake drum on the rear. They are kind of tough to get but it's a real easy conversion. DeSoto lives !!!

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | You will need a transmission out of a 1962 Dodge 880 or Chrysler. The 1962 Plymouth and Dart/Polara 500 use Bendix brakes and thus have the emergency brake on the rear wheels. Also, the P/D/P 500 transmission has the park sprag, which you do not need.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | No car yet....I think I got one of those slacker car brokers....no phone calls, no emails, no communication what so ever....they talk the talk...blah blah...oh sure, we can get it picked up in the next few days...then you pay them their "up front" fees and then they don't do s**t. Really beginning to hate shipping these old cars...have not had good luck the past few times....getting really annoying....it's been about three weeks so far with no phone calls, no anything from this so called broker....the guy told me that he has drivers that do that route every day.....Really?...cause my car is just sitting there collecting dust. So NO, I don't have it yet...LOL

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7805 Location: Williams California | Guy, A fellow member on this site bought a car from me a year ago last spring, and the broker charged him money up front, and never did come to pick up the car. The gentleman had to wait until Leo could come and do the transport. And the company never refunded him the money up front. ^There are some really shady operations out there. ---John

Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | Nowadays...if you don't know someone in the shipping biz, it's a crapp shoot. I think the internet has kinda fked a lot up even though it's easy to find stuff. I'm about to hit the BBB and start posting internet chatter about these guys if they don't get their chit together.

You only live once so why not do what makes you happy. That new 60 Dodge was a nice addition to your awesome fleet ! DeSoto lives !!!

Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | The search is the funnest part of the hobby, right?...Always looking for the next project...I always try to search for the next winter's project a year ahead of time!...This Matador needs almost the exact sheetmetal replacement/work that the 60 Adventurer needed., so this time around., should go a little quicker...basically the same car...just rebodied! I like the rarer, harder to find cars....you might as well restore one of those then the more numerous ones cause you spend the same amount of time on them...maybe a little more on parts and original purchase price, but in the end, it's all worth it!...I am pretty sure I won't see a '59 Sport Fury, '60 Adventurer or '60 Matador at any of the car shows I got to here in Sacramento! I am enjoying the education/restoration process on all these late 50s/early 60s Forward Look cars....just love 'em!

Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | Well., was gonna wait until the Desoto is done., but couldn't resist to start working on the Matador., pulled out the lower rock guard out of the pile of parts and went to work on it today., dollied it back and forth for about five hours today to get it back to it's original shape....Had to cut off all the bolts and trim clips cause they were pretty much rust-cemented to the part....the upper guard is next on the list. This part still needs another couple hours to get it really close before going to the sandblaster. Expert Posts: 1728 Location: Fleetwood, Pa | Floors look pretty darn solid. How's the rest of the car? Good luck with the restoration....
guyman |
| ||
Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | Not completely solid!...LOL., but floors are in pretty darn good shape...a few small rust throughs., but all in all solid car...that may change once I get the car blasted!!!!..ya never know. Besides that., needs a trunk floor pan, one trunk drop off and the bottom two inches on one quarter....which is weird cause the other one is solid as could be!...must have stopped up the drain plug area with a towel or something years ago and it rusted out...who knows. I did get the rest of the interior taken apart., dash taken out and all apart., seats out etc today...just a few pcs left to take out. Edited by guyman 2015-09-18 10:24 PM

Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | Got the last trim pcs off....was just a matter of using a little elbow grease...they came off without a hitch.... Car is pretty much all gutted except side glass..will take those out when it's time to head to the blaster with the car...gotta save up some coin now for that part. Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | Got the rest of the interior/windows/wiring all out today. Still have to drop the gas tank, pull motor/trans, take off rear bumper, pull off the doors, fenders, trunk, inner fender panels, hood and take out front windshield. The back glass is staying in...I don't wanna risk pulling it and damaging it....luckily all the surrounding areas around the windows look like new...not sure how., but no rot at all! Got lucky I guess. Then off to get stripped/epoxy primed. Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | Got the rear bumper off and gas tank out today...bolts so rusted I twisted my ankle with a three foot pry bar on the bolt stomping on it with all my weight...didn't budge.....got a little smarter and pulled out my plasma cutter and cut the bolts heads off...LOL Also got the trunk all cut out with the plasma cutter....makes short work of that kind of stuff...trunk looked like Swiss cheese...have a repop trunk floor but may have a lead on an orig. rust free trunk floor...the passenger drop off needs replaced as well....will post some pictures soon. Used a heat gun and putty knife...then cleaned up the rest with gas and a rag....so worked out well... Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | Well John., to be honest., I got no money to paint the '60 Desoto yet., so might as well start doing the hard labor on the Matador...it cost NO money...just busted knuckles, sore backs., twisted ankles....haha....and speaking of progress., got all the cars moved around today., but a couple away in storage for the winter to free up the garage for the Matador so I can start sanding away...and even had time to pull of the whole front end and pull the motor and transmission out of the Matador!...not that was fast!...LOL. Both the Matador and the Desoto barely fit into the garage...to get into the garage frig...I have to open the garage door., push the Matador up about a foot to open the frig door!....gotta do what you gotta do sometimes... guyman |

Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | I think that Champaign color may be some kind of primer??....cause when I stripped the undercoating off the floors..underneath it were These two colors...mostly the Burgandy color everywhere...but I am seeing this color just in the floor area...assuming it's factory primer....It's also in the trunk area champaign color)...but have the Burgandy way up in the wheel wells, back package trey etc....Still need to check the color code...
guyman |
| ||
Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | Just checked the paint code....white top and Deep Burgandy....so I guess that Champaign color is factory primer.

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | As I recall these cars were dipped in a vat of rustproofing. Looking at the frontend2.jpg photo it looks like you can see the highwater mark of the dipping vat as a gray color. Some of it closer to the center of the car looks like the burgundy was sprayed over it.
guyman |
| ||
Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | That's exactly what it looks like...it's been dippped into a large vat, most of the rear quarters have the rustproofing on it also., as do the floors, the big hump behind the seat, the inner fender wells up maybe about 30% of the wheel well.
