I've been trying to get more details on this car. Perhaps some of you know it. The owner wants to sell it. I'll post as much information as I get from the owner, as soon as I get it, but I wanted some of you folks who are "into" modifications like this to know about the upcoming sale. Also, if you're an honest guy (or gal) who can help me determine the value once you know the details, I'd appreciate it.

Sorry. If you checked this post before I deleted the pic, there was a picture of an open trunk. That trunk belongs to the OTHER 57 DeSoto owned by this seller. I had it mixed up, and have since deleted it. I don't know what the inner trunk of the blown car looks like.

it was built right here in Wichita by a great guy and friend of mine, a.w. mcvey. unfortunately, soon after being built, he passed away from cancer. sad. it was a decent texas (if I remember correctly) car to begin with, not a total rust pile. used a 392 as well. I have not seen the car in a long time, and honestly do not know if the family still owns it, but it was very well-built. when I saw it last, the drip rail moldings were chrome rubber aftermarket side molding because he did not have a good original set, but this is an easily rectified issue. a.w. owned a body shop and knew what he was doing, it was not a back-alley build.

let me just add that a.w. was a great guy and that I really miss him. I used to stop by and see him and ask about his 'savoy'. he'd look at me and say 'that's bottom of the barrel s***!'. hehe, that was awesome. both his 57s were fireflites.

Yep. That's the car you know, and the builder. But both cars are Firedomes...

I have ideas that are gnawing at my mind (not my wallet yet) of doing simmilar to my plymouth, but I want to use a poly

Height above the bonnet might be a serious issue though

The pics of this car sparks some 'get building'-itch with me as I've also still got a 500" supercharged stroker to be put in a FWLK-car of mine...

So many projects, so little time. Oh and money.

Michael, I didn't see any 'Rogers' posting in this thread but I think you addressed the picture request to me?
If not, guess you'll have to deal with it!

It's 440-based engine with 4.15" stroker crank/kit from 440Source. On top there are Indy 440-1 heads and a Indy blowermanifold. 8-71 Kühl blower. Solid rollercam and fully balanced crank, H-beam rods and Ross pistons.

Last year I tried putting this engine in my '65 300 convertible, but due to the engine bay layout and steering column/cable shifter mechanism, it simply would fit properly because of the tall Indy heads.
A FWLK-engine bay looks more promising.

I don't know for sure but my C Body was less tight than my FWD Look car, at least around the master cylinder area.

I might have to work out a way of having a "quick change from blown to normally aspirated for me, because it wont be
street legal here, it will stick up to much, but I have pretty much talked myself into it

You can, but its the height issue

You have to be able to see a spot on the ground 12 meters in front of the vehicle from the driving position right across left to right

And here in WA your not allowed any moving parts to come out of the bonnet either

This one I am not sure how strict it is, as in you can get a belt guard but not sure if moving throttle linkages count

Some stupid laws about how a pedestrian would be injured if you hit them

Being hit by a car that weighs about 1600kg, I dont think they would come out to well anyway

I thought really big rear wheels to jack the back end up a bit

I will probably just build the car with everything under the bonnet first, then build another engine with a blower to put in later

If I do do it, this is for the plymouth

Whne I built this engine I had similar ideas in mind, for being able to take off the blower for the 2-yearly mandatory checkups we have here (for cars later then 1960).
I've even made an entire coverplate for the intake where a single carb can be mounted if needed.
I have also used .110" headgaskets to get the CR down to about 8.7 now. If I ever want to loose the blower I can replace the gaskets with regular headgaskets and end up somewhere with 9.5:1 cr and still end up with a fun motor.

While the enginebay in my '65 300 certainly appears roomier than a FWLK-bay, it was the location of steering box, column and the cable shift-linkage near the firewall that posed problems with the headers.

I've never had to tangle with the cable shift aspect but I have plenty of experience in making stuff fit in a C-Body!

Jeabutjeabut... Hemi's are easy!

The exhausts pretty much go straight down.

The Indy heads had their ports higher and further outwards than stock, that even castiron manifolds didn't fit in the car.
And exhaust nr. 4 would end up straight for the rubber shiftlinkage-cover near the firewall.
I finally gave up and installed a 400ci instead.

I just joined this group today and this is my first post. What led me here if the two photos of the '57 DeSoto with the blown 392 Hemi, the subject of this thread. The reason that it sparked me to comment is that THIS IS MY OLD CAR ! I was the one who sold to to A.W. in Wichita in around 1997-98 (?). I was living in Edmond, Oklahoma at the time and I attended a car show in Bricktown (OKC) where A.W. had a mostly stock 1957 Firedome 2 door hdtp in the show and I don't remember if I spoke with him then or left a note that I had one that I wanted to sell as I was moving. The body was all done, patch panels really nicely installed and primed. Aside from the car itself, in the sale I included the complete 392 Hemi, a pair of OEM twin strut mirrors (I believe that the right side may have been a remote mirror, not sure about that), a really nice pair of OEM rear antennae, all of the additional roof stainless and door sill plates from a '57 300C. I may start another thread on this as the original is a pretty old one. Does anyone know if this car is still around ?

This pair of cars was just seen at the National DeSoto Club convention in Hutchinson, KS in 2019. They had been stored away for a number of years and a family friend got them both up and running. Several family members were in attendance with the cars.

Very cool to see these two cars, of course I only saw the stocker on the left when I first contacted A.W. at the car show in OKC in the mid-90's. If I remember correctly he would later send me an issue of a magazine that featured the huffed car on the right on the cover. Does anyone remember this ?

The roof stainless from a 300C wouldn't be compatible with a '57 Firedome. Neither would the door sill plates.
