Not very, goes in the air box, probably doesn't work, and the valve is probably about to blow the bottom seal out and puke coolant all over your carpets. There is a man that rebuilds them, costs you about $120. Or you can get a valve from somewhere that is a simple on/off affair, and get yourself a longer actuator cable (get a long choke cable, cut it down, swear a lot) and not worry aobut the thing failing for a good long time.
Ok so thermostaticaly controlled heat is pretty darned cool (er hot?) but... eh, I'll take something stupid and reliable in this case. |

Location: northern germany | who said the oe heater valves are not reliable? they are just over 55 years old. the rubber seal is the only thing that ages. replace it and it will last without problems 100 000s of miles.

It seems to work fine. In the photo it looks like the cable goes to the front of the car... optical illusion, it loop back and goes into the firewall. |

It seems to work fine. In the photo it looks like the cable goes to the front of the car... optical illusion, it loop back and goes into the firewall.
I planned on doing exactly this actually! Great minds.... |

So OFF is when the lever is over at FULL ON and ON (for the valve) is when the lever is at the OFF position. Not a big deal but its the reverse of "normal". Of course you still have all the partial setting in between OFF and FULL Heat |

I came up with a sollution for this on my 60 phoenix. It's brilliant! I turn the knob upside down. Sure you can read where it says warm now, but the arrow points the right way as a reminder!

Location: Arizona | Update on the heater valve. Having the lever operate "backwards" continued to bug me. I discovered that the valve comes in two configurations, a pull-off and a pull-on version. I bought the correct "pull to close' version and installed it. Part number from NAPA is 660-1271 . The cable travel is exactly right to fully open and close it. Now my "warm" lever and arm are oriented correctly.
