Is there any way to associate the VIN number on a title to some other number on the car, other than the VIN? I heard that Imperials have a number stamped on the left rear frame by the wheel opening. Is this correct, and which number would this be - and how to tie it to the title? Anyone have a picture of a frame or other body number? Thanks.

go look at the regal lancer thread. it shows the lightly roller stamped "engine" number.

Its not the vin.

Supposudly people can go to the Chrysler historical society and they can look through the whole list with the options on microfiche and you can find your vin that way.

I don't know who these people are or how its done. But good luck.

I've heard about the frames being stamped but have never found it on any of my cars.

The '58 Imperials have the VIN on the PNT/TRM tag at the lower left under "SRL"
I've also seen this on 300D's but don't know about the New Yorkers.

Pic of one of my Imperial tags for example

I looked at a couple of regal lancer threads and couldn't find any frame number pictures. Could you point me to it?

KC, is that SRL number the motor number or the last 5 digits of the VIN or sequence/order number? Because my car is a New Yorker, the motor has been ripped out of it as they all have been. If it was a Saratoga or Windsor, it would probably still be there.

Again, I'm not familiar with New Yorkers, but on the '58 Imperials and 300s the SRL number is the VIN

Here's the plates from a 300D currently on eBay to compare.

Here are the photos I have. The quality is poor because these are copies of photos I took years ago with a cheap, film type point and shoot camera.

I found the Chrysler ones on the left frame rail about the middle of the drivers door. They seemed to be stamped harder on the top than on the side of the frame. Top ones would be impossible to read with the body on the frame.

The numbers also have been reported to be on the right frame rail as well.

As shown, I have only seen one Dodge with the number in that position. A 57 CR. Paul found his on his Regal as he showed in his thread.

Most Dodges I have seen have the number HAND stamped on the left rear frame rail

Awesome. Thanks Greg and Don! Those frame numbers look REALLY hard to read. You almost need to know what they are ahead of time. But it is good to know where to look, otherwise the task is near impossible.

Here are a couple of body tag examples from my cars - both '57 Windsors. The first one is made in Los Angeles and is here:

The second one is made in/near Michigan and is here:

Unfortunately, I don't see the VIN anywhere on these body tags. I'm not sure if the New Yorker would follow the Windsor style or the 300 version.

As I recall, the few New Yorker body plates I've seen shared the Imp/300 format as shown above. On the other hand, I was surprised to see the different format for Detroit built Windsors! In addition, I had not realized that the lower left corner numbers were the sequential numbers of the corresponding VIN! Thanks guys!

Always something new to learn!!

We have restored many 1957-59 Mopar cars, from Imperial to DeSoto to Chrysler and Dodges and also a Plymouth or two and we have never seen a VIN stamped on a frame until just a few years ago when we did a frame off restoration on a 1957 New Yorker.
The VIN was stamped high up on the inside of the frame rail just before the kick up for the rear end.

Hard to understand why that car would have the VIN stamped there but it did. The car we restored had a beat up frame so we swapped frames and the one with the VIN came from a 4dr sedan parts car we had.
We have found the engine number on many frames on the left outside frame rail in the back. But the numbers are rarely so clear that you can read them.
Bo.

The numbers on my Dodge (58 Regal Lancer) are located in 2 places on frame, both are the engine number, one on the top of frame and other near rear spring hanger, both on Left hand side, numbers are hard to read and lightly stamped,

Paul.

While cleaning my frame on my 57 Royal I found a number on the back, it looks like the engine number. and its reversed and "embossed" stamped backwards...

the right side had the stamping but not the reverse emboss.

Did Chrysler randomize this crap? for crying out loud, they had some guy running around changing the tooling randomly?

"okay Jimmy now lets move it back a foot and emboss this time, the next car we will stamp the vin sideways! ohhh lets do upside down!"

The number on the right was stamped/embossed on the steel as it was slit and coiled by the the steel mill. It identifies the metallurgical properties of the steel itself.
The other number is the the part number of the the frame or frame rail. It was stamped by a roller stamp by the factory on the rolling mill that formed the rail. Guess what? Jimmy didn't even have to be there!

The vast majority of 57 Dodges had the engine numbers hand stamped on the left frame rail more or less in the same area. This was established years ago on this forum.

Hey, I don't know for sure what happened at Chrysler but I operated one of those typical rolling mills back in the day and when we ran right and then left side parts we didn't bother to turn the part number roller dies around!! It was all about production. The more parts we kicked out on a shift the more bonus we made!!

I had this '57 Windsor frame (Detroit built) lying around for ages and never found the frame VIN or motor number. I decided to clean it up and paint it recently. Lo and behold, the motor number pops up on it. I was looking in the wrong places. It was on the right side, not the left! Upper side of the frame between the body mounts in front of the rear axle. I didn't find anything on the top of the frame. Now I need to check my other cars. I did clean up the frame from my '58 New Yorker, but never did find anything on that one. It may have been stamped too lightly, or rusted too much. But now I want to go check it closely to see if I can make anything out on the right side this time.

On my 57 convertible, in the "usual" place (right frame, front of rear wheel). On the other '57 Imperial (wrecked), no number !

I never found any numbers on the frames of any of my 58 New Yorker's. Not saying they weren't there, but I never found them.
