Just got my first forward look car- a 1961 pioneer. The engine original engine-318 poly-is locked up solid, also looks like it has 2 speed tranny, not torqueflite.. I have a fresh magnum headed LA 318 id like to install, but have read that they won't bolt up to pre 62 tranny. Id like to keep the pushbutton shifter but go to a 904 or 727. whats this swap going to take?

Lots of money and headache

Why not fix or replace your poly?

I am not a purist, but to put a later engine/trans combo in, is pretty involved and requires the replacement of the entire drive line (no park brake on the later trans, so you need a later rear end with park brake)

New exhaust, and the push buttons wont work with the later trans properly (later trans has a park position, you need 6 buttons, or a separate "park" slide lever

I have not done this conversion myself (I have read enough on here to learn its not the best option)

If I was going to go the later engine road, I would do something like this

Good luck with your project

most stuck engines are just the rings seazed to the walls. I'd dis-assemble the engine & see what shape it's in, or change out the whole drive line. The 62-65 small block trannys should work, or Imperial Services (if they're still out there0 made adaptors for later trannys.
