Expert 5K+ Posts: 9654 Location: So. Cal | I just picked up this beaut. Some of the best rust free sheet metal I have ever seen on a Chrysler. Came with a great running 440 motor & 727. 4dr sedan that has been chopped & lowered. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9654 Location: So. Cal | Yes, the rear doors are welded shut to the body and the glass isn't included. That's the hard part of trying to get this to work. How is it done, can you cut up the originals and make them work somehow? Someone did a pretty good job on the chop as it looks decent. The door handles, trunk handle and fuel filler are shaved. Hard to tell in the picture, but it is a single headlight car. I need to sort through all the stuff in the trunk to see exactly what I have in there.

Regular Posts: 59 | That looks awesome! Don't know what you paid for the car, but I bet you pay more than that for the front and rear glass! You could fill some of the curved C pillar areas to reduce the opening down to something more manageable from a Challenger or Barracuda. If you deleted the rear quarter fixed window posts the car will look a mile long! Do you want the single headlights? I had to convert one of my fenders from single to double. It really wasn't that difficult.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9654 Location: So. Cal | How did you do that conversion? I may end up doing something like that in the future with a replacement fender for a different car.

Regular Posts: 59 | I had a damaged double headlight fender that i drilled the spot welds out for the headlight bucket. The bucket mounting flange is identical, so just drill out the spot welds for the headlight bucket on the single light fender and weld in the new one. Tack it first and check for trim ring alignment. Now as for the wiring, you would have to probably run additional wiring from the dimmer switch, or replace the whole harness with something like a EZ harness, which is what I did.

Expert Posts: 3967 Location: DFW, TX | Unfortunately, the hardest part of ANY chop is getting the glass right. You have to plan for it ahead, and then do the chop around the plan for the glass. I think this car is an excellent candidate for an entire roof swap! Maybe you can find a really rusty '57-59 Plymouth or Dodge 2dr hardtop shell with a good roof, and move that roof to your Chrysler. Would look pretty sharp. Of course you would have to work something out for the doors and side glass, but it's not outside the realm of possibility. And definitely easier than figuring out the glass for what you have. Good luck.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9654 Location: So. Cal | Actually, I see this car as the perfect parts car. And I agree that without the glass, that this could be a very expensive & disappointing endeavor. I didn't mention it, because I wanted to see where this conversation would go to. I recently picked up some rusty cars that are missing parts. So this car is generously donating it's body parts to save the others. I will save the 440 motor for a future '68 Coronet R/T or '69 Charger project that I would like to eventually get into. Anyone close to So. Cal need a big-body frame? I am going to have to get rid of it pretty fast once it comes apart. Edited by Powerflite 2015-11-10 8:24 AM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9654 Location: So. Cal | I disassembled the interior today and emptied out the trunk. Check out this floor! That is as clean as it gets except for the hole he put into it for the shifter. Veteran Posts: 188 | This car was for sale in Los Angeles - it was advertised in craigslist. I lost interest when I saw it chopped. I am glad it will support the restoration of your nice Desoto through.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9654 Location: So. Cal | Yes, sounds like the same car you looked at. I will be using a lot of the sheet metal & parts for my 3 other vehicles, including the DeSoto. This sure beats trying to get all of these parts individually, but it is a lot of work to separate out. I will also save the roof to provide long curved sheet sections when I need them. Anyone need some sedan-specific trim parts? I also have all the side glass and the back window available. I don't have the windshield. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9654 Location: So. Cal | 440 Motor and trans are out. The trans is an aluminum 727 with an E-brake on the back. At first I thought it was the '62 only push-button trans, but it is a later 727 with the E-brake tail end attached. Anyone want to purchase it from me? It is for sale as I have no use for it. It worked well enough to move the car across the street to my driveway. I don't know any more about it. The left side exhaust manifold has a large square plate monted to the side of it. The previous owner told me it is for a turbo mount. I sort-of believe him except that it also has the standard exit as well. Anyone know what this exhaust manifold was originally used for? Expert 5K+ Posts: 9654 Location: So. Cal | I got the car completely disassembled except for the rear body and also cut the right rear door free as well. Next is the roof and individual body panels that I want to save. Anyone need the frame? That is the one thing that I most likely don't have the room to store. Expert 5K+ Posts: 8443 Location: Perth Australia | I think its sad that it got killed, that looked so tough, but glass would be a problem If I had the skills, lowering the roof could re spark my interest in the plymouth That 61 that got done was awesome The extra (approved) engineering that would need to be done to license it here though is what makes cut down cars very rare here

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9654 Location: So. Cal | This one went too far in my opinion, and a lot of the work was not very good. I didn't have to cut the rear part of the roof, it just came off because the welds were quite poor. The roof looked great, but I later found out that it had been sectioned in 3 places and had a ton of bondo on it with all of the supporting structure replaced with 1/8" thick strips of metal as if attaching thick slabs of metal to the underside was the right solution. I think this kind of thing could be done well, but this one wasn't it. They totally butchered the top rear quarter & trunk lid by trying to shave them. They both look pretty bad even with all the bondo on them. That hurt because I could have used that trunk lid otherwise. Now I have to cut it up to make patch panels for my DeSoto lid. But really, if I wanted a 4dr with a lower roof, I would just get a 4dr hardtop. That's like getting a 1-2" chop right from the factory.
