We will be rebuilding the 325 poly engine that came in the Coronet. The cooling system was plugged with ?? After a removing the engine and taring it down it is now at the machine shop for hot tank and baking then we will see what we are needing. We are planning a complete engine kit from Egge unless someone who has bee down this road recently has a better source for parts. The machinist was not to pleased to see all of the silver paint on the engine! Says the aluminum really gunks up the tank. I removed the freeze plugs and cam bearings check valve and ball before it went down town.

Every engine he tanks is paint ed, that should not be an issue, larger concerns are coming, regarding cylinder bore and crank journal reconditioning

yes this guy is just a whiner.
the engine will be going to another shop for the machine work. We like to have them tanked before going to the "real" machine shop. There is will get baked and checked
we are expecting to go .030 over bore, the rod and main bearings look real good so not expecting any surprises there.
passing the cylinder sonic test is a concern due to all of the rust in the cooling system. Will know more in the next few weeks.

in case you don't know...the short block on the Hemi & poly are the same, so the hemi suppliers have all the parts to price compare. Our own "Wayfarer" is Q.E.C, There's also Hot Heads and an outfit in Jacksonville that has kits on E-Bay

I used a combination of Egge, Kanter, Hot Heads & Rockauto for parts for my '58 325 poly.

Thanks for the info. I will take a look at the sources. I did see the kits on ebay I should give them a call. The machine shop said they use Egge for this kind of rebuild on these engines.
Yes now would be the time to put a set of Hemi heads on the Dodge, that is an option and would take care of the problem of finding an exhaust manifold that is broke it two.
I am having no luck finding a good one for the left side. I would upgrade to headers for the poly but find no source. there are headers for the Hemi.

this looks much better after getting all of that aluminum paint off the engine. more cleaning to come once it gets baked. so far I see not cracks or any thing other than wore out bore.
and the rocker tips are going to need to be reconditioned or replaced.

If you're not going with the original silver/aluminum, then black is supposed to be the best @ shedding internal heat.

I was thinking black was the original engine color under the silver but after taking a look at the engine in my parts car your right Silver was on this engine?

wonder why the the engine was black? it sure looks to be original. I am going to be inspecting this engine hoping the rocker arms will be in better shape.

This is the parts car I bought to help in building the 2 door a lot of parts were misplaced over the years of the car being apart and the power steering will be used. This is a nice original complete car. of course the left exhaust manifold is also broken.

whats up with the rear bumper and all of those gaurds?

we bought this car from an auction, the owner collected over 800 old mopars and put them on a 100 acres in eastern oregon. This car was one of his personal cars he drove until 1985. After cleaning the spark plugs and giving her some fresh fuel she started right up and I was able to drive in on the car trailer.

I got a complete rebuild kit for my 1960 Plymouth 318 poly through "The Internal Engine Parts Group Inc." on Ebay in 2009. Complete kit cost $797.45[free shipping]. List price was $1197.45. I thought that was a decent price and all parts were top name brands.
Included were -

lifters & cam
rod bears[10 over]
main bears[10 over]
cam bears
complete gasket set
oil pump
time chain & sprockets
pistons & rings[30 over]
freeze plugs

I don't know if they still do this kit and I don't know if they would have parts for a 325 but it might be worth asking if Egge is more? Again, this was 2009.

When I did my motor, the machine shop showed me a few tiny cracks of a water passage on the head surface of the block. They were heading towards the cylinders. He drilled tiny holes at the very end of the cracks and said that it SHOULD stop the cracks. Hopefully yours comes up nice. I now have at least 40,000 on the rebuilt and running strong.

...all well discussed in Econ 101... Supply and demand.

It all comes down to a handful of guys like you who have the desire to rebuild the engine instead of replacing it
with a Magnum 360 or a 5.7 Hemi. Cast pistons, for example, are made in batches of 100-200 pieces...and you only want 8.
Your are better served if you step up to forgings IMHO. Same story with gaskets, bearings and camshafts since there is little or no interchange.

I suggest that you shop for the individual parts that you need and avoid 'kits' that may or may not have everything you need.

I discuss the option of upgrading to a more modern engine / Transmission and like i expected the owner wants things left OEM

I don't blame her she and her mom bought the car new at a dealership in Portland in 1957, a lot of sentimental value to the car.

The engine was picked up this morning before 8 am from my place. Thanks Neil! I am going to leave the parts gathering up to the machine shop since they have sources they are used to doing business with. I may have them build the engine and spin it on their SIM machine before delivery this prelubes the engien with break in oil and they check that all is good to go. I do like that done before I test engines on the Dyno.

Willie G -- did you get the parts and the complete motor gasket set yet.... I just came across your request -- and I may be able to save you some money on the parts --- I am 99% sure I have a complete motor gasket set ---
which I can definitely beat the going rate on -- if I still have it.....

the engine is completed and will be getting it next week.
The guys at Southworth took care of everything for the build including testing on their SIM machine and said all was good to go.
it has 200 cranking pressure and the CR is right at 10 to 1 they said run premium fuel and all should be good.
time to get back to work on the Coronet. I need to paint the fire wall before the new engine gets back in the car.

good luck on your engine rebuild.

We have the engine back from the machine shop and all ready to be installed but after inspection of the converter I discoved the starter ring gear has busted teeth. Also installed new  converter seal.

172 tooth count gear should see it this week.

I should dyno test the engine on our dyno just need a little prodding to do so. ;)  anyone want to help?

while the engine was at the machine shop I took the time to change the color of the fire wall and hood before the engine is installed.

this is sea foam green which the owner wanted in the first place.

Since the the 325 was tested at the machine shop for leaks and primed with break in oil I decided to simply bolt it in the car after I replaced the starter ring gear. I have plans to test another engine on the dyno soon I will know more about that when the customer gets back to me.

the ring gear was a perfect fit.

the new starter is moved out just enough to cause exhaust pipe issues. no big deal the pipes need some help any way.

the alt belt pully is to wide so will need to change that out.

I set  up a battery to give the new starter a test before I buttoned up much more.

She spins over and sounds very good.

couldn't help myself so ran power to the coil and gave a little fuel down the carb, gave her another spin and she fired up for a very short time. Good to see some life back in the Coronet.

Lookin' good. You need the Red Ram decals for the valve covers.

got her running and ready for the muffler shop. Engine sounds good and runs smooth. looks like a new fuel pump may be needed soon.

The new hi torque starter and one wire GM alternator work great. wanted to install a pertronix but id didn't fit the distributor so still runniing points and need a new vacuum advance unit or another plan on an electronic Distributor

the heater core and radiator are not back from Mac's so usning the old radiator from the parts car for now. after the exhaust is done it will be to the paint shop to finish the color change on the green, the new color looks much better. I have the jambs painted and cleared but will finish the exterior in the spray booth I am able to rent.

Been a lot of problems with fuel pumps (@ least for the Chrs) for a number of years now. On them an adaptor allows use of an LA F/P, don't know if it works for the Dodge or not.

good to know about the fuel pumps will have to look into that thanks
yes the heater will be going back on once I get the new core from Mac's.

the exhaust is now hooked up. had to have the left header pipe rebuilt to clear the new starter, no big deal.
Now that I can drive and hear the engine she sounds very nice, The guys at Southworth did a great job for us.
the dang rear brakes are still locking up? I replaced the wheel cylinders cleaned and reassembled every thing so now What?
back off the Adjustment if I can?
The power steering I installed from the parts car seems to be working ok but still getting a lot of noise from all the air in the system.
at least it is not leaking anywhere.

Then and Now Automotive in MA can rebuild the factory fuel pump for a very reasonable price and their turnaround is really quick. I was super happy with the pump rebuild they did for my '56 Dodge 315 pump. http://www.then-now-auto.com/fuel-pumps/
