Temporarily suspended to cool off Posts: 316 | So Hagerty turned me down because they don't consider a bicycle a daily use vehicle... well I've been using my bike as my ONLY vehicle for 15 years! Rubbish! I really wanted agreed value insurance because I don't want the car getting totalled out for only $500 or something. Never mind the finacial loss of that, the emotional hit would be pretty heavy. I just wanted enough money to get myself something to fill the void that would leave in my life if god for bid Rattle Can goes off to the crusher. Any other suggestions? Also, I know of SP plates, but I'm also a licenced amateur and the Ham radio plates kind of you know... having my call sign there would be pretty cool in my eyes. It's also only $10 for them. I'm in Oregon, 36 years old, suggestions? (also please don't knock me over biking home from work, I just wanna go home and have a beer folks! I work hard at the machine shop.)

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | I don't know if this is still the case but some years ago people were buying motorcycles and licensing and insuring them as their "primary vehicle" in order to get lower rates on their other non-primary vehicles. So one thing you could look into is finding a legitimately registered and titled MC that has blown up and someone is selling dirt cheap and make it your primary vehicle even if you never use it. Insurance used to be very cheap on them but I haven't checked in years. The insurance was like $100 a year and you saved enough on the other cars to make up for it.

Expert Posts: 2490 Location: Kansas City, KS | Thoroughly check restrictions for SP plates. Some states have strict driving limitations with very few benefits. http://www.oregonlaws.org/ors/805.210 Section 1a would be enough for me to never register a vehicle with SP in Oregon. Maintain the vehicle of special interest as a collectors item and use the vehicle only for exhibitions, parades, club activities and similar uses but not use the vehicle primarily for the transportation of persons or property

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | That kind of language has to be in these bills to satisfy all the eyeballs looking to object to the whole thing. But everyone knows there no way to police it. How is the state going to know whether you drive it 100 miles a year or 10,000? The worst case is you have an accident while taking the family for ice cream and in the process someone says "how come you were driving THAT COLLECTOR car." "Oh, my regular car wouldn't start". I don't think they are going to launch an investigation over it.

Temporarily suspended to cool off Posts: 316 | I don't have a family to take to ice cream :D and besides, I would just use the bicycle for that.

Expert Posts: 2289 Location: Eastern Iowa | So...KC.... How much is the "personal property" taxe on an old car and how do they determine the amount? In Iowa, it's only $22 per year on my F to renew the plates however they are not of the personalized type. Edited by finsruskw 2015-12-20 11:34 AM

Personal property tax on my '58 Imperials is $17 per year per vehicle with no annual registration fees. Standard issue plates would cost me $62 per year so the antique plates save me $45 with no driving restrictions or mileage limitations.

Temporarily suspended to cool off Posts: 316 | the cut off date for antique plates here in Oregon is 1956. So the Phoenix doesn't qualify. I think at this point what I'm going to do is just put Ham radio plates on the car. Their $10 plates and have the same look as the antique plates.
