Location: Melbourne, Australia | Good day all , dad went to regrease the front wheel bearings on his 57 Chrysler New Yorker Yesterday and noticed the drums are in mint condition (which is a great bonus) .
But noticed it has a like a thick ninja star shaped spacer behind the drum to space it out . If he removed the spacer the drum would just lock up . So he refitted it and all is fine . But as I went to put the wheel on for him I noticed the brake drum has a 20...... Chrysler Part Number stamped on it in yellow .
Being a 20.... number it will be a 60/61 or later part , hence why they are so good as they must have been NOS and not long fitted by the previous owner.
So after that long winded story , my question is what is the difference on a 57 to a 60 onwards drum , as in why the spacer ? As the spacer isn't something we are keen on having in there .
Hope someone might have some clues ?

Pure un adulterated guess, but maybe the drums are the larger ones and someone has used the H/D drums and shoes instead of the std ones it came with and thats why the spacer
My guess is that the spacer is 1/2" thick
I noticed that the front drums on my plymouth are wider than the ones on my dodge

Location: Melbourne, Australia | That's what I was thinking after a mate mentioned this , but all looks original in size except the drum , its only like 3mm or so . Its just the centre of the drum that's hitting , but with the spacer in I can only get half of one side of a split pin in .

Location: Camptown PA | My interchange manual says the correct drums for your car are part number 1671346. These were used on 56 - 57 Chrysler, 58 windsor SW, 57 Desoto, 56-57 IMP, 58 saratoga, New Yorker and Chrysler 300. 59 -61 Mopars with 11 inch brakes used part number 1948112 while cars with12 inch brakes used part number 2275433. I could not find part number 2084798 listed. Hope this helps |
