Member Posts: 21 | Hi guys, I'm looking to rebuild the front end of the CR. Who do/did you deal with for front end rebuild kits? Thanks!

Elite Veteran Posts: 792 Location: Buena Park, CA | Craig, I've seen kits from Kanter and PST (and on ebay). I picked up one kit 2nd hand and everything in the kit is total junk and would be dangerous to have on your car if you actually drive it. Don't know if that is still true. I try to collect NOS Mopar stuff off of ebay if you want really good quality. That being said, the actual suspension joints on the upper and lower arms really don't go bad unless they were not maintained. So before you spend the money double check to see if ALL of the are actually in need of replacement (of if it is just a select few). They are very easy to clean up and re-grease. It's been my experience that front suspension issues with 55-56 Dodges and Plymouths are generally caused by the steering parts (inner and outer tie-rods, center-link, and Idler Arm), tires, or wheel bearings. But you can have an occasional bad joint (I have one on the passenger side lower control arm on my '56 Dodge).

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | I agree. It is rare for a '55-'56 joint to go bad if it hasn't been run dry. So definitely make sure you need it first. I like Rockauto for most suspension parts, but I haven't checked to see what they offer for the '56.

Member Posts: 21 | Thanks guys for the input. Upon closer inspection, I see there is alot of play around the king pins, so I'm thinking the bushings are shot. The rest of the steering looks pretty tight. I just need to spend some time and clean the old grease off of everything and take evaluation on just what is wrong. I'll keep you in mind mobileparts, thanks!

Elite Veteran Posts: 792 Location: Buena Park, CA | Craig, A big yes on the king pins! I have had to replace them on both of my cars. If you can, try to find a NOS kingpin kit. The 55-56 Dodge's and Plymouths have slight variations in the kingpin set-ups. The 6 cylinder cars use brass bushings in the top and bottom locations, while the V-8's use a roller bearing in the upper location, and the brass on the lower part on the king pin. The new kits (again) are junk. I had my machine shop install a set for me and the rollers just fell out of the bearing. Here is a thread where I posted some pictures on my kingpin job. Lots of good information there. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=53746&... Dave
