There were two cars used for the movie, one a real Firesweep convertible, the other a lop-
topped coupe with a custom made top mechanism. In the early 90's, the latter was owned
by John Fay in the Seattle area. He sold the vehicle to a local guy when he moved to Hawaii.

No idea about the other car.

I have heard also that it, one off the two was not genuine convertible.

I saw the car once at a WPC Regional Meet in the Seattle area. The owner at that time was a friend of Jeff Carter, and he did state that the car started as a hardtop and was beheaded for the movie.

Ah Ha! Yes, I did own the converted car used for the film (supposedly). I say that because that was the story when I bought the car and since I didn't care about it's movie provenance, I took it with a grain of salt. It did have red paint on the front bumper
from when it hit the barricade in the film and I never attempted to remove it...
I bought it as a "consolation " as I had missed by hours a 61 Newport ragtop. I did have a ton of fun with that car. The person I sold it to started a frame off restoration to fully convert it but as of late, I hear it's still unfinished.
Ironically, last year I finally got a 61 Newport ragtop though I do miss the Desoto! Hahaha!
