Expert Posts: 2519 Location: central Illinois | Does anyone else have an awful smell coming from their interior plastics? My push buttons and armrests all smell like rotten feet even after a thorough cleaning. I'm thinking about sealing them in some plastic bags with baking soda and seeing if that helps.

My '60 NY had the same with all soft vinyls like horn pad and armrests. That was until a mouse pissed all over the car and died there as well. After that I emptied a number of bottles of enzymatic cleaner which cured the musty smell on the plastics and vinyl, and 95% of the mouse smell.

The car was very clean and well maintained, but ouuuuuu the odor from the back hollow areas of the armrest mounting base was indescribably bad. There was a whitish residue in them that gave of the odor. I thoroughly cleaned them and they were fine after that.

Member Posts: 43 Location: Peoria< IL | YES! Our '55 smelled faintly like feet, socks, and cheese. Some of it was grime on the door panels and armrests, but there's also something in the vinyl that just won't go away. I cleaned the car's rubber surfaces with Purple Power degreaser and rinsed thoroughly. It got better, but there's still a little funk. I just tossed in an air freshener in the front and rear ashtray (so nobody sees them) and its helped to freshen things up. Hope this helps.

Expert Posts: 2519 Location: central Illinois | I pulled the buttons out and they were covered with some nasty funk. I scraped it off and washed them with simple green and a bristle brush but they still stunk. The girlfriend said she'd pick up some bio-enzymatic cleaner but never did so I bathed them in hydrogen peroxide which helped a lot. Still a little funk to them but they're doable as is. I will probably do an air freshener too.

Member Posts: 43 Location: Peoria< IL | 1960fury - I have no idea what you're talking about. that old 50s car smell? nothing smells sweater. No, its not that. I also love the old car smell. You can't beat it, reminds me of my childhood. This is more of a funky cheese smell that seems unique to Chryslers. First noticed it on an old Imperial a neighbor had. I thought it was because of the guy's body odor. Since I noticed it in ours and I shower every day, I know its the car! Edited by throwinwrenches 2016-09-01 7:57 AM

I literally cannot stand the odour of most cheese, and cannot eat any cheese for that reason. The odour of cheese literally makes me puke in most cases. Yes, I can relate to that!!

Expert Posts: 2002 Location: Branson, MO | I'm curious as to what causes the odor you guys are smelling. It might be from a combination of dampness and sunlight (or lack there of) that permeated the car while sitting in a barn or maybe outside. My '59 factory original Firesweep is 57 years old and still smells like new. But it has been garage kept all its life and in a climate controlled environment for the vast number of years. This probably makes a huge difference just as it did regarding rust - it has none of it either and it was sold new in Illinois, then went to Pennsylvania, and now it's in Missouri. With only just over 23,000 miles I doubt it has ever been on salted roads either which would be a definite plus.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1044 Location: Auckland, New Zealand. | I'm with you Ian. Why anyone would want to put something that smells like cheese into their mouth is beyond me. I never/can't eat it because of the smell. Yes interior plastic from 50's Mopars smells like Parmesan cheese. For the record the seat hinge covers are made from the same stinky stuff. Expert Posts: 2631 Location: Minor Hill, TN | try an air freshener . I had some odor in my current '61 when I 1st got it and I put an air freshener in it. I also kept air fresheners in my other 1 to keep it smelling nice and I used the jasmine or the linen smelly 1 . No smoking is allowed in my forward look either. I never picked the habit up to me its a nasty habit and it stinks. Edited by 1961plymouthfury 2016-11-02 1:16 AM

Veteran Posts: 158 Location: Ottawa, ON | Interestingly I have some parts from a donor car like push buttons and so on stored in plastic bags in my garage. And these parts really have a strong cheesy/rotten smell whereas my car itself does not smell...except maybe a little like cigarette smoke and beer.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 323 Location: New Orleans-ish | Yep, steering wheel plastic, push button plastic, and arm rest bases-all smell of puke. I remember reading a while back that the smell is caused by an organic component in the plastic used back then. It's like out-gassing, and you can't wash it out no matter how hard you try. You can paint over it though, if you're not concerned about covering the original molded plastic color. That will end the smell for good. Edited by DeMopar 2016-12-14 11:44 PM
