If you check the spare part manual for '63 you'll find that it was indeed a filter there from the start.

The lines are steel normally. someone made an easy repair. I have replacement filters. they include new fittings if needed for repair.

Yes of course it's needed - that was an improvement - the earlier transmission types had only a strainer.

You can buy the spare part manuals from many sources, but that is more for the hard-core guys that really needs paper books (yes, I'm one of them :stressed:).

If you want to have the manuals and don't care if they're digitalized, then go to http://jholst.net/300resource/index.php and download all you need.

They replaced the external canister filter with an internal fabric filter and stayed with that until the end. Get an internal filter for a '64-'65 and you can eliminate the canister with a piece of straight tubing the correct length.

Be sure the filter has two holes like the one on the right below, some parts stores think the '66-later will work but it won't.

The extra hole feeds the rear pump.

The readily available DexronIII/Mercon will work just fine.

I always remove the external filter and go with the internal only. Like I said, the factory did it that way for 40 years.

Does anyone know where I can find that external filter? None of the parts suppliers list one.
