Expert Posts: 1316 Location: Belgium, 40 miles south of Brussels | Hi, My '58 Plymouth came without any fender mirror. I would like to install one on each fender, but I have no idea of the OEM location (if there's one). I have seen a original Mopar paper pattern to install the dual antennas, so I was wondering if something like this existed for the fender mirrors ? Thanks.

Location: The Mile High City | You can find a template for my Dodge here - should be the same for Plymouth?
The template along with John's photo should work well for the standard mirror (I don't think it works for the optional dual strut jobs). I have seen a factory template for these mirrors offered on eBay with a NOS mirror. I asked the seller if he would make me a copy - no reply! On a side note: kind of cool to have a car where no mirrors were ever installed! The fender mirrors have limited use at best - they are more aesthetic than anything. Sorry, but I have to disagree regarding limited use at best. My fender mounted mirrors on my '59 DeSoto work just fine as long as they are properly adjusted. I can see everything I need to that any other outside mirrors can provide except the convex right mirrors with "the objects in the mirror are closer than they appear" message which, of course, '59s didn't have. And you are correct in that they really do look good.

Expert Posts: 1348 Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | I agree with the "limited use". Because fewer cars of that era and earlier had passenger side mirrors, you could say that ANY passenger mirror is better than none? Towing in mulit lane situations is just scary. Although the driver's side is just that seemingly little amount forward, it greatly reduces you line-of-site and combind that with the very limited view of the dash mounted mirror[particularly on the Suburbans] and you have a MUCH larger "blindspot". When I was 19 and my eyes and neck were as young and healthy, I could care less if my car had no mirrors at all. I love the looks of the mirrors on my car but at this time in my life and the major increase in cars and multi-lane highways, I would never put fender with dash mounted mirrors on if I had a choice over door and roof mounted mirrors. Later, Karl.

Expert Posts: 1316 Location: Belgium, 40 miles south of Brussels | Well, thanks everyone for your input. You really got me wondering about the location of those mirrors, now, though I am a bit concerned with originality. Were they ever offered OEM on the door ? Or was it always the fender ?

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7400 Location: northern germany | i prefer the fender location. looks so much better and in theory (i think) it takes away more of the feared blind spot. also prefer the dash mounted mirror that allows full width sun visors. these cars were just made for me in 1960 outside mirrors were dealer installed and didn't have a strict location, but i guess there was some sort of template for the remote mirror, to avoid drilling thru reinforcements or the firewall. not rarely you can see passenger and drivers side mirrors in different locations. thats when the guy putting the mirrors on started with the drivers mirror and found out that this location interfered with the factory antenna on the passenger side. I found that car almost instantly, it's been featured in the very first book I bought on american cars ! I forgot to mention that I do have an factory antenna on the passenger side. It's located at 14" from the fender's edge. Edited by Chrome58 2016-10-01 2:48 AM

Expert Posts: 1348 Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | If you go with the fender mirrors, like mentioned, make sure the antenna is not in the way. My guess is mine were originally mounted and then they decided to use them moved them for a better view and THEN found it hit the antenna. I could tell when it touched as i would loose my radio reception. I wound up putting tape on the antenna. When I had my car repainted, I moved it just a 1/4 forward. I do prefer the look of the fender mirrors but I really would suggest that you go try to find one and see how you like them before you do anything. Later, Karl.
