Where could I get the stainless armrest trim shown in this photo. All four of my 56 Dodge Custom Royal armrests are missing these trim strips:

Mine is like this (from a sales advert) (maybe they didn't even had those strips??)

BUT then there is this one (so I am confused as to which version is correct):

They MAY have been an option offered by Chrysler, or only used on certain models or trim packages. Or they may have been an aftermarket item...

Ok, I have looked in the '56 Parts manual, and under "Door Arm Rests" it lists a moulding, and it is used on the Dodge, DeSoto, and Chrysler Windsor/Saratoga and the New Yorker. But it only lists them as being used on the 4 door sedans, and the 2 and 4 door hardtops.

I examined the one 55/56 Dodge armrest that I have that has the chrome (stainless steel) strip: It is different than the ones without the strip.

The one with the strip is foam over a complete metal form.

The one without the strip is two piece: Bottom is plastic, top is foam over a partial metal form.

I am planning on trying to recover the two piece on (top only) but the foam has deteriorated somewhat (old urethane foam by the look of it).

Any BTDT's on that issue would be welcomed.

Two things:

1. The metal trim strip that separates the top and bottom of the one-piece deluxe armrest is the same profile as the door trim on my 56 Custom Royal, i.e. a wrecked 56 CR parts car could be a source of the material to make the dividers.

2. I recovered the driver's armrest late yesterday afternoon. For having no clue, it didn't turn out too bad (not perfect but better than the tired dirty original).

To answer my own question, there were apparently TWO types of arm rests for a US built 1956 Dodge (and maybe the 1955s too).

1. The two piece: bottom is hard plastic. Top is metal covered with a foam and then a vinyl. Probably no stainless steel trim. This is how my car came.

2. The one piece: "frame" is metal, covered with foam and then a vinyl. I see a PN on it 1602 695 but I can't find that part in the 55-58 Mopar parts catalogue. Seems to come with the stainless steel trim.

Turns out the stainless steel trim is easily removed from the one piece and can be applied to the two piece. This is my plan. As soon as I find the right rear arm rest I took off my car and promptly hid somewhere (and I find the fourth one piece arm rest that I am pretty sure I have (somewhere). Just bought two one piecers the other day (thanks muchly to Todd P. who posts here ).

Four photos (note all three arm rests are the same size. Camera did something weird)

The first photo is what I have (not my car but the same colours). The second photo is my goal. Photos three and four show my driver's armrest with trim that I have added and then two one piece arm rests (one with its trim and one without - because I took it off an fit it on my two piece).

Ha. I was looking for something else yesterday and bumped into the "missing" right rear arm rest, basically hiding in plain sight, in the house, not the garage. (Go figure)

Now if I can only find the final arm rest that came with trim (so I can steal the trim off it)
