Expert 5K+ Posts: 9900 Location: Lower Mainland BC | I am working on my 56 Crown Royal D500 in a very confined space (1942 single car 12 x 20 garage - shelving on one side) at the moment. I finally got the fuel tank back in after having it restored and lined. That meant I could get the rear wheel back on and roll the car back enough (with the garage door open) that I could work in the engine bay. Started with removing the fuel pump (I got a NOS one yesterday from a local 55-56 expert/owner). Then I moved on to starting to remove the water pump (it leaked during the initial starting attempts back in late September). It's been many years since I did this on an American built car. I used "Movit" to loosen the rust, etc. and got 3 of the 4 fan bolts started with a very short 1/2" box end. As I look down into the fan hub I am starting to convince myself that I won't be able to complete the installation of the NOS (another NOS!) water pump unless I pull the rad. (Read: Open another can of worms). So here are the questions: a) is this correct? Do I really need to pull the rad to replace the water pump? b) I had a quick look but I didn't see any drain pet-****s on the bottom of the radiator. Is that correct? The rad looks original based on the CPDD logo on the top tank. I really don't want to open yet another can of worms (i.e. feeling the need to have the rad re-done while it is out, etc.). Sorry for being a noobie but hey, I am on this one.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9900 Location: Lower Mainland BC | I checked my 56 Dodge shop manual and it says nothing about removing the water pump. I also have the 57 Manual (because in includes the D500 engine and the 56 manual does not) and it says: "(1)Drain the cooling system and then remove (the) fan shroud (air conditioning equipped cars). Loosen the fan drive belt by loosening the generator mounting bracket and swinging the generator in towards the water pump (on cars equipped with air conditioning, loosen idler pulley). (2) Remove fan, spacer and pulley, (3) Remove the five water pump to housing retaining bolts and washer and remove the water pump from the car" If only it were that easy. I have the double fan belt pulley because of the PS pump at the back of the generator. This might have eaten the space needed access the four fan bolts (more easily). I might have to try one of the metric gear wrenches that I have for my UrS4 Audis.

(Read: Open another can of worms). ;) Went back at it today. Got one bolt "out" with my 13 mm gear wrench (shortage of Imperial tools in my garage at this point). Oops. 2" long bolt in 1.5" space = rad had to come out. Rad is out (3 bolts and one machine screw (what idiot did that?). Can of worms is open. (Rad is puking rusty water).

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9900 Location: Lower Mainland BC | 56D500boy - 2016-10-23 6:43 PM Rad is out (3 bolts and one machine screw (what idiot did that?). Can of worms is open. (Rad is puking rusty water). Flushed the rad with the 1" garden hose for 20 min. Ran clean (but later there was some rust). I need to turn it over and run the hose through the "bottom" outlet. Got the old water pump off. Must be a replacement - cast iron impeller. The NOS pump going in has the bakelite impeller. Started cleaning and painting things (ADHD sets in and I lost the focus). Fan cleaned and painted. Spacer cleaned and painted. Bolts painted. Will be painting the timing mark bracket tomorrow (forgot about it today). Really really want to paint the water pump manifold. Makes me crazy. And then there is the oil filler/breather tube begging to be cleaned, sanded and painted. See? This is my own personal can of worms. Making things better and forgetting to focus on the purpose of the exercise: getting the engine ready to be started (again). Water pump. Fuel pump. Carb. Fuel filters. Fuel in the tank. Fire in the hole!! If only I can stop cleaning and painting.

Yippee. Ended up painting the Timing pointer and radiator top and bottom tanks semi-gloss black and the generator bracket "aluminum". Also painted the water pump manifold "aluminum". Fan blades and double pulley got semi-gloss black yesterday. I resisted the oil filler/breather tube some how but I don't know for how long. Was going to paint the fuel pump bolts until I noticed that they seem to be stainless steel and the indent on the top of the bolt heads is stamped (in metal) with the DPDC logo. Wow. That was attention to detail. Edited by 56D500boy 2016-10-24 8:47 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9900 Location: Lower Mainland BC | I was looking for something else and found this old post. Had to laugh at my Freudian slip, i.e. my car is a 1956 Dodge Custom Royal (D500 315 hemi) *NOT* a Crown Royal although it has driven me to consider drinking Crown Royal. Maybe I was in that mood when I first posted "Crown Royal" Edited by 56D500boy 2017-09-19 6:14 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9900 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . I wish I could edit that title. It was early days (Oct. 2016) but I knew better. Custom Royal is a car. Crown Royal is a Canadian Whiskey. Anyway, 4.5 years later, I am back at it. This time to replace the NOS pump that I installed in Oct. 2016. It looks like it has been weeping for a long time. I only really noticed it a few weeks ago and then last week, it really started to leak out the weep hole. I have another NOS pump to install but while I am at it, I will be cleaning up the area at the front of the engine (now that I can access it easier with the rad out). The frame will be cleaned and painted semi-gloss black (Tremclad rust paint). The blue engine bits (from a rebuild, I presume) will be painted silver (Treclad Gloss Aluminum). Oh boy, another can of worms (or "while I am here, I might as well do this....." Extreme Veteran Posts: 443 Location: Beaumont TX | Dave, Did you rebuild this water pump with the kit you showed on the other thread. I'm just wondering how to rebuild a water pump since I have one just like yours.

I'm just wondering how to rebuild a water pump since I have one just like yours. I had a NOS pump on the shelf so I did not rebuild my leaking pump. I posted the rebuild procedure for the sealed bearing shaft type water pump in that other thread.
