Anybody know of cross-overs to modern paints for any of the 56 Dodge paints? Specifically for me I am interested in these colours:

1. 505 Wedgewood blue

2. 506 Royal Blue poly (I've found a couple of Duplicolor (tm) metallic blue paints for early 90's Chryslers that are pretty close)

3. 555 Sapphire White

Anyone explain why the paint code sheet above says that my 56 CR D500's tricolour combo is 561-2 (Sapphire white roof, Royal blue poly saddle and Wedgewood blue body) but my cowl tag just says, PT = paint(?) = 261?

Okay new 56 Custom Royal paint question. Now that the D-500 engine is running quite nicely thank you, I'm moving on to interior stuff. This afternoon I polished off a "stain" on the outside of the windshield using my becoming favourite tool, "VIM" (a slightly abrasive kitchen stove-top cleaner). The stain was some kind of drip residue, almost like glass etching, from a steam heating pipe that dripped on the windshield during its 25 year in a underground parking garage at a local highrise apt building. VIM took it off or polished it off very easily.

With that success, I took the VIM inside and started on the passenger side of the dash - worked well to take off the oxidized paint. Then I used Meguire's Scratch X 2.0 to continue bringing up the dash paint. Maybe it was the lighting but the dark part of the dash does NOT look like the same metallic blue that is on the steering column or around the inside frames of the door windows. It looks dark blue but NOT metallic. Is there a fourth paint colour in my 3 tone combo.

This would be a good example of a minty 56 Custom Royal in the same colours as mine (it doesn't look metallic either):

VIM (we've been using this since we lived in Germany 1986-87):

I guess nobody can confirm that PT =261 actually means the 561-2 paint combo (Sapphire white roof (R) , Royal blue poly saddle (S) and Wedgewood blue body (L))

Just removed the drivers door panel which had water damage and fount that it is marked "D633 C 541". I know D633 = Dodge Custom Royal and therefore the cowl tag TR = 541 must be the colour combo for the trim, as shown in the second photo (not mine but same colors as mine).

I hate to say this but I am very likely to have a GM paint (code) on my 56 Dodge. The Chrysler/Dodge 505 Wedgewood blue does not exist in any modern paint systems. Today at a body shop paint mixer/supplier we went through some options and I picked a 1977 Chevy light blue as being very close to what is on the car now. The good news is that paint has a modern code/recipe/mix and therefore if it works close enough I could get more than just spray bombs mixed up.

The paint shop guy commented on my dark blue paint as being too metallic (it's a 92 Neon colour, Intense Blue Metallic). I had found a closer match to OE Royal Blue poly back in the fall but was a 83 GM colour. Now that I am going down
a GM road with the 2815 Light Blue, I might have to rethink (and redo) the dark blue.

While researching interior codes, I came across a 56 Custom Royal cowl tag showing 271 as the paint code:

This is listed as 571-2, i.e. Sapphire White roof, iridescent charcoal poly. saddle and oriental coral lower.

Like this one:

And while I am on a roll, here is a 274 code 56 Dodge (DepsilonD's) (thanks Dave - found them via Googling for 56 Dodge Order Codes)

His cowl plate showing Paint (PNT) = 274

So from the colour chart, that would be 574-2, i.e. Sapphire white roof, irridescent charcoal poly saddle and crown yellow lower, like this:

I was going to contact the eBay seller of the white, dark green, light green 2dr Custom Royal Lancer regarding paint and trim codes but I can't now. Well that was fast. It seems to be gone, deleted, no longer there.

I would have guessed the paint code would be 265

Sapphire white roof
Jade Green Poly saddle
Sea Foam Green lower

Picked these off eBay because I could see that they had the formulations for the paints, not just the names and codes. Took them to the people that I have been using to mix up paint for me in hopes that they would be able to use the formulas to mix proper Dodge colours. Nope. The "toners" used in those formulation are no longer available. I guess my "Wedgewood" (light) blue will have to stay as 1977-78 Chevrolet Code 20 Light Blue.

Anyway, for future reference here are the sheets that I bought:

Not directly but it turns out that have been there sometime in the past 15 months. No crosses to anything modern that I can see for the 56 505 Wedgewood blue. Maybe I am missing something?

Marc: Thanks!! That link/site seems to be a winner. Lots of good info including a paint code for my blue dash *AND* supposed modern equivalents, like the one below:

(I have no clue what the results mean but I presume that a paint shop might, otherwise I guess you have to order from the AutoColorLibrary folks (??))

I've been down to TCP Global once and have used their single stage Restoration Shop paint on a car trailer. Seemed decent, but I don't have enough paint experience to really offer anything to this conversation.

The 56 Dodge two-tone and three-tone colour combos according to the 56 Dodge Data book.

I always wondered about the colours in the taillight area. Now I know the rationale(s).

I bought this off eBay because I could see that there were formulas for the paint. I finally got the package today and immediately took it to where I am getting my paint matched (or at least trying). The paint specialist looked at the charts and said, "Nope. All too old. Paints are gone, toners are different, can't do anything with it. Sorry. "

Oh well. Thought I would share anyway. The back of the second sheet provided me with info that I hadn't figured out before, i.e. when the three tone paint code starts with 2, the roof and taillight area was sapphire white. If it started with 3, then the roof and the taillight areas were black. There is one code, 460, that had a oriental coral (red) roof, white saddle and black body. I have never seen a photo of one of those.

See attached.

I can't honestly say that I have the 56 Dodge paint codes totally figured out but I am trying. Case in point is a 56 Dodge 2dr Suburban wagon that is obviously black (Jewell Black) Aquamarine. I guess that the paint code would be something "63", i.e. the base combination was 563 (see below) but as for the actual first number, I knew it wasn't going to be "5". I also figured that "2" was unlikely because I know my three tone 56 Dodge paint code starts with "2". That left either "0" or "1".

Here is the reference paint list (again):

While going over that list, I remembered a white and yellow Coronet with a 175 code. This one:

So with that in mind, I would have to guess that the Black and Aquamarine wagon would be "163".

Sure enough it is (photos courtesy of JerseyBob):

I was just going through some old posts regarding trim and body codes and found another 56 Dodge 163 Paint code car, i.e. Rustyfender's (Kelly's) 56 Dodge Royal 4 dr hardtop. As with the 163 wagon, 163 on Kelly's car = Jewell black roof and upper saddle and aquamarine lower:

Recently Igor (aka "frwl") posted some photos of a black, white, metallic green 56 Dodge Royal Sedan along with its cowl data tag.

This:

Igor speculated on the colour code, 364:

frwl - 2019-10-19 12:08 PM Here is a new pictures for your collection. This Royal 4 Door Sedan (Body 825) has Jewell Black upper / Sapphire White saddle / and Neptune Green lower color (code 364, if I’m interpreted correctly)...

I have to agree about the colours. If the paint code starts in "3" then the roof and taillight areas were black. The 6 and the 4 with the 3 = Sapphire White saddle and Neptune Green lower. The only thing is I am not sure if that particular "Neptune Green" is really the same as what the car left the factory with. (??)

Let's see if I guess right according to this pretty much definitive 56 Dodge Paint Code list that was done by Bruce Faulkner:

(Yup. I guessed correctly:)

Dave H. has suggested to me that Bruce's colour code list missed a "977" Golden Lancer code but wondered whether the codes were different between Detroit and LA. Could be.

The tag photo that Dave H. sent me was from the late (RIP) Doug Ruffner's D500 Golden Lancer.

The LA tag (the one that shows the model (D633 = Custom Royal) shows the paint as 077, whereas the Detroit tag without the model designation has the Paint as 977. Both are for 836 cars = Custom Royal Lancers which kind of flies in the face of Bruce's comment that 077 was a "Royal Only" code. Go figure.

Igor (frwl), in a different thread, pointed out that Bruce had a problem with the single colour codes for Oriental Coral and Garnet (51 and 52). I've confirmed the issue and corrected Bruce's list. I also took the liberty of correcting Bruce's note about the 077 Golden Lancer paint code as only being "Royal Only". Not true. I have images of Coronets, Royals and Custom Royals (all 2 dr Hardtops (Lancers)) all having the 077 Golden Lancer paint code.

See below.

Igor also posted photos of a very handsome 56 Coronet 2 dr sedan with the very rare Oriental Coral roof, i.e. a car with a paint code that starts with 4, in this case 460 as in Oriental Coral Roof, Sapphire White Saddle and Jewell Black lower. This is in Bruce's list.

The 460 car:

...with Modern paints.

The off-the-shelf paint that I guessed at back in 2016/7 as being close to my 56 Dodge's Royal Blue Poly was "pb3 - Intense Blue Pearl" (98-99) Dodge Neon from DupliColor

This:

Dupli-Color BCC0422:

I had the Wedgewood blue colour matched to my right rear dood at an AutoParts Supply store back in 2018. The closest match was some Mack Truck paint.
But then the paint tech said "But, I can adjust it (the Mack Truck paint formula) to match my scan, if you want".
Naturally, I said "Please adjust away". He built me 6 cans in 2018 and then again this summer.

Only recently have I "unearthed" locations which exposed the original paint (under some chrome/stainless bits that I removed for one reason or another).

Here are some photos that compare the OE paints to the new paints that I am using. In both cases, the original paints seem to have more green in them than the new paints that I am using:

(I am going to preserve areas of both the OE Royal Blue and Wedgewood Blue under the chrome pot-metal driver's side mirror base for posterity (not that anyone will care)):

No photos of the original car but there is evidence that the car was a Coronet 2dr hardtop painted in the relatively rare 369 combination of Black Roof, Garnet Saddle and Oriental Rose Lower

It would have looked like the car on the right (from the 56 Dodge mini brochure):

I don't know what happened to my post but I tried to correct you on the 164 paint code (maybe it's in the trim code thread)

164 = Sapphire White over Neptune Green Metallic

( Sapphire White over Aquamarine wasn't actually offered in a two tone)

This 56 Coronet has paint code 362 which is black roof (and taillight area), white upper and royal blue metallic lower. However, as you can see from the photo the lower is not metallic blue but closer to the Wedgwood blue
enamel. Must have been changed from metaillic blue to the Wedgwood at some point in the past. (???)

We will never be able to figure out how exactly the way the 56 Dodges were painted. The people who might have known what happened are unfortunately gone to their maker.

Based on my experience with my 56 Dodge Custom Royal with Sapphire White (roof), Royal blue metallic (upper) and Wedgwood blue (lower), I believe that the way at least
the LA factory did the paint on 56 Dodges was as follows:

(First some nomenclature: Roof = the top of the passenger cabin, Upper = the top of the hood, rear fenders and trunk lid; Lower = the paint colour below the stainless side and hood trim)

1. Once the body was assembled and the doors and trunk were attached (no hood or fenders yet), the entire body was primered (red oxide). Once that was dry, the body was painted with
the upper paint. This included the roof and the firewall, doors and trunk. In my car's case, the Royal Blue metallic.

One of the "proofs" of this is the body tag. In the LA plant, it seems that it was common practice to tape a copy of the build card (or sheet) to the cowl tag after the primer
was applied but before the upper paint was applied. Hence the strip where the card/or sheet was eventually removed. Also, inside of the doors and the edges of the floor got "upper" paint.

Nothing on the firewall was installed at that point and the firewall got painted with the "upper" paint. In your case the Jade Green Metallic. You can prove that to yourself
by removing the heater fan and peaking at the fire wall.

2. Once the upper paint was applied, the roof body was masked off in three ways:

a) to expose just the roof, if the roof was to get either the Sapphire white, or Jewell Black or Red. If it was to remain upper body colour, then no paint was applied.

b) to expose the lower colour and protect the upper colour. Then the lower colour was applied. In my case, it was the Wedgwood (pale) blue

c) the taillght area was masked off and painted the same colour as the roof, Sapphire white in my case.

3. The fenders were painted in a different area and they were painted in the lower colours and stockpiled for the final assembly line (after the engine was installed, etc.
The little upper triangle is a separate piece and they were painted upper colours and stockpiled for final assembly (before the big fender chromed mirror base was applied).

4. Hoods I am not sure about but I think that they were painted in a different shop using the lower colour both on the top and bottom of the hood and then masked
and painted with the appropriate upper colour above the stainless "chrome" line (the Royal Blue metallic in my case)

5. Bottom of the trunk lids vary. I think the Detroit cars got upper body paint but I think the LA cars were painted a grey, using non-metallic left overs as the paint source.
Mine is grey. I have seen Detroit cars with body colour.

6. Inner front fender liners. I think the LA plant liners got painted satin black. I am not sure about the Detroit factory.

That is all speculation but based on my experience with my LA-built 56 Dodge.

This comes from the very informative "Wishes on Wheels" factory video on YouTube.

This applies to two tone cars, of which, the 1955 and 1956 Plymouths are a good example. Not sure how it translates to three tone Dodges (or even two tone Dodges) but it is
interesting (at least to me) anyway.

Once the main part of the body was assembled with the doors hung and the trunk lid ("deck" lid) attached, the "white metal" (raw metal) was "Bonderized".

I had to look that up:

"Bonderize: a verb (used with object),bond·er·ized, bond·er·iz·ing.
to coat (steel) with an anticorrosive phosphate solution, usually in preparation for the application of paint, enamel, or lacquer."

Following that, the body was sprayed with what seems to have been red oxide primer. Not sure if they baked that or not.

Then the body was taken for top coats. The first top coat was the roof of a two tone car. Once applied, the body was rolled to an oven to bake the top coat dry.

Once that was done, the roof (of a two tone car) was masked off with brown paper and masking tape. Then the body was sprayed with the main body colour.

I presume that was baked but I do not know. EDIT: It was baked. See the last (new) screen grab
