Now that my engine is running (finally!), I can move on the brakes. I have a new Master Cylinder to install plus all the wheel cylinders (6) and at least shoes on the right front (with an new (good used) drum - wheel cylinder had leaked badly). However, as I start thinking on this next phase, I am not sure how the Master Cylinder gets filled, it being tucked way under the PS bellows. As shown in the photo (using a 57 D500 as the example).

Hints? Turkey baster? Funnel and hose?

I use a funnel and hose. There is a funnel and hose setup that you can buy.

Turkey baster works - in a pinch I've used a thin long piece of cardboard folded down the middle as a funnel.

20ml syringe works for me....a few dollars from any chemist/ drugstore

Thanks for the ideas guys.

I got the old MC off and was about to install the new Raybestos MC36063 MC when I discovered that I couldn't get the stop light switch off the old MC. I'll try again in the morning, temporary re-mounting the old MC on its four bolts/studs so I have something to resist my socket and 21" breaker bar.

For fun I shorted the two brake switch wires together and, yes, even without the ignition on, the brake lights are "hot" (be careful with the hot wire, it will spark when it touches a ground). Both brake lights lit up (bright LED bulbs).

Try the switch again tomorrow. Other wise look for a 1604989 or a 2084284.

Before you install the new master, be sure the cap screw threads VERY easily into the casting. You need to be able to secure the 7/16" cap screw maybe a half turn with a wrench. That way, when installed in the car a half turn will loosen it and you can easily loosen the screw with two finger tips. I frequently run a tap into threaded base to get rid of any interference.

Then just loosen the bolt, lift it a bit, shove the cap to one side a bit and refill with a syringe as suggested.

I use a bolt instead of a screw. To fill up the fluid I use a syringe.

Lucas gasoline additive comes in a bottle, probably 4 fl oz, long skinny bottle. Clean a couple times with brake parts cleaner, air dry, now you have a fill bottle.

Am flushing my 56 Dodge D500 Total Contact brake system and using a 2-cycle oil measuring syringe to refill the single pot reservoir, as needed (often).

This (came with about 4" of clear vinyl extension hose):

I tried that syringe for a bit but it was too jerky/sticky, resulting in blasted spillage. Found (bought) a long slopey funnel. Worked way better.

Like this except DOT 3, not ATF.

(BTW: The bolt that holds the Master Cylinder lid on has a 7/16" hex head. Racheting wrench is your friend

)
