1646368 REAR FENDER STONE SHIELDS BODY SIDE STONE DEFLECTORS

Item 12-23-4 on page 7/22 of this pdf: http://www.jholst.net/55-58-parts-manual/fenders.pdf

Mine is okay(ish) but I see it took a hit at some point in the past 60 years. Not sure if it can be massaged out or not. Therefore looking for one in better condition.

I think you are going to be better off taking that one off and reworking it. Stainless isn't too hard to restore and bend back into shape, just go slow so you don't overdo it.

Now that some cans of worms have been closed back up again, I've decided to open a new can. (Yippee!). Today's can was the right side rocker panel which was showing a bit of bubbling (but not much). I found a couple of pin holes and one larger hole right by the said right side stone guard/deflector.

Took me a bit to figure out how the stone deflector was held onto the car: one big metal screw (not a bolt) at the bottom and two studs and nuts through the edge of the wheel well lip. Naturally, the nut jammed part way off and I ended up snapping off part of the stud. Not to worry. The stud is basically a carriage bolt with a very flat head. My neighbour has access to what I need and said he will get me a few tomorrow.

Here are two photos that show the "new" (better) deflector I bought from John at Big M on the left and the old one I took off today on the right. Subsequently I was able to get the two brackets off (by hammering them towards the bottom of the deflector). They will be reuseable after a soak in EvapoRust and some POR15 or the like and new carriage bolts (and nyloc nuts)

Okay. While I was working on the right rocker panel cleaning up a few bubbles and two or three perforations (one significant and two pin holes), I soaked the stone deflector clips in EvapoRust.

The EvapoRust must be kaput because there wasn't much change in the clips even after 36 hours. So since I had my angle grinder with a sanding "disk" already out, I used it to clean up the stone deflector clips (lots down to bare metal). Then I painted them with gloss grey Tremclad (think Rustoleum) and let them dry over night in the heated downstairs bathroom (where my wife never enters).

My neighbour brought home some 1/4" wide flat head carriage bolts the fit in the clip stud holes perfectly. (One clip stud pounded out quite easily, the other had some "ears" that had to be weakened with my Dremel and cut-off disc before I could pound out the stud).

This is where I started yesterday:

Today I trimmed the wide flat head on the new stud for the shorter clip (the head was a tad too big) and then loaded the stud into the clip and hammered the clip into the deflector (I had marked where the old clip position was in the "new" deflector so I knew when to stop hammering).

Same for the larger clip except there was no need to trim the stud head. In both cases, I did nothing to hold the new stud into the clip. The head of the stud gets wedged between the clip and the deflector quite tightly so no need. If I felt it wasn't secure, I would probably have used some JB Weld. *IF* I hadn't got these wide flat head carriage bolts from my neighbour, I would have just used normal 1/4" carriage bolts a ground down the crown on the head, as needed to make it flatter.

When the primer on that area of the car was dry, I test-fit the "new" stone deflector. Both studs went through their respective holes nicely. (I then painted the rocker panel and stone deflector area with a custom "Wedgewood" blue spray bomb I had made up to match the 56 Dodge Ditzler card colour).

Tomorrow when I install the stone deflector, I am going to use some black closed cell foam left over from my taillight project and black silicon sealant to seal the stud on the outward side. On the inside I will do the same thing but have the foam and sealant under a wide flat washer. The nut that came with the stud/carriage bolt is a self locker.

Well that *Seemed* like a good plan. Went to install the stone deflector this afternoon with the foam sealing gaskets I made yesterday, black silicon sealant, two 2644 5/16" fender washers and the lock nuts....BUT...by the time I had all that stuff, the threaded bit of the carriage bolt/stud was too short. Plan B: went down to my work shop to see what I could scrounge up as rounded head 1/4" carriage bolts to see if they would work without too much grinding and cutting and I found two flat head carriage bolts that were about 1/2" longer. The flat head was a smaller diameter but that was fine. They fit like the other large head ones, only longer.

And with that extra length I could use the foam gaskets on both sides of the hole, with silicone sealant *AND* the big fender washer (on the inside). Worked great. My fingers on the other hand will take days to get that black sealant off them (even Goof-off didn't take it all off).

Photo tomorrow or whenever the sun shines again (supposedly raining tomorrow (Friday)).

.
Well almost two years later, I finally get around to the left side stone shield. There were no pressing issues in that area so I didn't go after it until yesterday and today (just because it was time and I was working on the left side rocker panel anyway). Got the bottom screw/bolt off yesterday and broke off one of the bolts/nuts from one of the brackets (no problemo - they get replaced anyway). Had to wait until today to jack up the car a bit to get more clearance for a 7/16" deep socket and rachet to get the second bolt/nut. I thought it was coming but it broke off too. Again, no problem.

There was some surface rust under the stone shield (because dirt accumulates there and probably stays moist - if you let it) but really not too bad. Three or four tiny perforations, easily fixed with Plastic Metal after pre-treating with Rust Converter/Rust Mort and then paint.

The brackets on the back of the stone shield are now off and soaking in Rust Eater (green stuff). I think the smaller bracket will be reusable but the larger one might have to be replaced. If so, I am thinking aluminum bar stock.

Anti-rust paint will be applied to the body before painting with the colour-matched "Wedgewood Blue" paint that I used on all the lower panels.

Well, I was right. The smaller of the two brackets will be useable (after an anti-rust paint). BUT the bigger of the two brackets looks like it was eaten by the tin worm so it won't be going back on. However, it was still useful as the template for a new one. I had the 1/8" x 1.5" aluminum bar stock left from another project so I made a replacement bracket out of it.

It looks like it will work but it might be too thick to conform to the fender contours. I'll check tomorrow. Plan B will be something thinner (I have some 16 gauge galvanized steel so that might work).

I should really re-read my old posts.

I went out to try the install of my new thick bracket and found (surprise, surprise) that those 3M big-headed carriage bolts were not long enough. Just like I did (apparently) almost to years ago.

So now its down to the basement to see if I have any more of those 1/4" carriage bolts that I had found 2 yr ago.
