Expert Posts: 1886 | I'm dealing with dumb title issues in the state of NC. Is the vin stamped anywhere else on these two car? Top of frame rail or heater box area?

Expert Posts: 2003 Location: Branson, MO | On my '59 DeSoto Firesweep built at the Dodge plant, I did not find a serial number anywhere on the car except for the plate under the hood on the passenger side in the standard location on the cowl just below the lower windshield molding. Mine does not have one on the driver side front door jamb, only what looks like holes where a tag could be mounted but never was. My car is factory original with the cowl tag still being spot welded in place, never removed, and still wears the factory paint so the authenticity is unquestionable. I did not look for serial numbers on other parts of the car and don't know if the engine, transmission, or other parts of the car that may have all or part of the serial number stamped exist.

Early production plates would be 1117 59x (2 for 2 door hardtop/5 for convertible) M591 100xxx on the top line; later it was changed to 1117 59x (and just) 100xxx Fred is correct about sweeps made at Dodge Main-2 empty holes by the driver's side door hinge with the VIN M412 10xxxx stamped on the data plate. If the Dodge was made at Dodge Main it might be similar For the domes/flites and Adventurers there is a production number stamped on top of the right frame rail just before the rear bump similar to 59x 1yyyyy; however, while the 59x matches the car, the other number is not the VIN Good luck

Expert Posts: 3967 Location: DFW, TX | I've seen anecdotal evidence that the VIN is stamped on the frame, but it is stamped on the TOP of the frame rail under the trunk. You would have to remove the body to inspect this area. I bet LD3 Greg can answer this for you. He has had the body off numerous FL cars and done thorough and well-documented restorations on them. You might send him a PM.

Expert Posts: 3967 Location: DFW, TX | Maybe I'm just not sure of the difference between a SRL, a Vehicle No, and a VIN depending on the tag. I thought they were slightly different terms for the same thing. But I'm willing to learn. Here is a thread that shows where some folks were finding frame stampings, maybe it will help. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=59277

Expert Posts: 1886 | I have to convince the local guy that these weren't riveted to the body but spot welded. Yay
