can't seem to get my head straight on tires for my 300F. Looked at B.F. Goodrich 800-14 silvertowns, Goodyear 800-14 super cushions, and again at a coker H-78's-14's. Like the Goodyears, but worried again about lean in turns, don't know how the silvertowns wouild react in turns. Want a good looking tire that will handle good for my every now and then Sunday drives. This will most likely be the last set of tires I purchase for this car, so want to do it right.

If you want to do some active driving, then skip the bias ply and also the Coker.
Get some Diamondback White wall radials http://www.dbtires.com/

If you want a very good looking trailer queen or drive only short trips in low to moderate speed on absolutely flat roads, then go for the bias ply tires.

Just my 5 cents

My car came with the BFGoodrich 900x14 and I had no problems with them. It turns like a 4230 lbs car its but no bad at all compared to a modern Ram truck loaded with combine weight less than my New Yorker and the driving experience was similar.

At least four times now I had to do an emergency stop in the highway with my Bias Ply and drum brakes and the car stops very well.

I drove the New Yorker's 12 years old tires at 95m/h and it felt like a new car, so I will replace them with the same ones once they are worn out.

Run like hell from cokers and diamond backs. They aren't true. I've bought two sets of the egg shaped wonders and a friend just bought a Thunderbird with them already installed and guess what? Bouncy bouncy

Paul, thanks for the tip about the coker and diamond back tires. There an't much left out there for us 14 inch wheel guys, I have been looking at the B.F.Goodrich in maybe a 850-14 or even a 900-14, the Goodyear super cushions would probably be my first choice, but they don't come any larger than 800-14 and that is just not enough tire for my F. I have heard both the good and ugly about cokers, still not sure what I will do, don't want to go the radial tire route. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a nice set of Goodyear Bluesteaks somewhere. ha ha ha ha thanks for your reply, Walt

in 2004 i put a new set of diamond back wide whitewalls on a 61 desoto. rode like a dream, had it up to 133 mph. these tires still looked like new when the new owner replaced them (against my advice) with cokers last year.

I have two sets of Diamondbacks on my two Cars. They do a beautiful job vulcanizing a whitewall, to you spec, onto the sidewall. Keep in mind that they use whatever tires they are able to buy at the time. The selection of 14" tires is slim these days, as no new cars use 14 inch wheels.

I almost forgot about my Newport tires.

They are radials and they are a fit to a small truck, as you can see on the picture it is virtually no difference compared with an ORIGINAL 800x14 Goodyear super cushion that was installed on my 1957 Imperial.
The outside diameter was identical, even that this particular Japanese brand didn't have white walls, it was another brand I think "Hankook" had a version with the small white strip.

800X14 is smaller that you need but they are a cheap option.

your newport looks good with those radials on it. I had looked at a hankook thin whitewall radial 215x75-14, they don't have a 225x75-14, and wondered how they would look on my F, but thought they might not look right, cause they tell me radials will sit lower than bias ply tires, and these cars won't look right? Are those wide whitewalls on your newport 215x75-14's? The hankooks would sure be a economical solution to my tire issue if I could use em. Those 2 tires in your photo are really identical as you said, you cannot tell any difference in diameter at all. I'm sure the tread width on the radials is even greater than the 800-14's. Trying to get all my ducks in a row before I decide to lay out big bucks for a set of bias ply tires, maybe the radials would look just as good, and ride and handle even better??? thanks for your help, Walt

Walt, if you think the 8.00x14 Goodyear Super Cushions are too small for your F, you'll hate the look of the Hankook 215/75R14 radials. They are at least an inch shorter than the Super Cushions, which is the tire I think you would be most happy with.

You don't need radials, these cars ran millions of miles just fine on bias plies. Just make sure your steering and suspension components are at 100% and you're running the correct tire pressure recommended in your owners manual (read:not too high!) and you'll be amazed with the nice ride and handling they offer!

I will check them out Walt. I have to call overseas and let someone take a look to the size. They are actually really good and made in Japan I almost positive they are TOYO.

At least we know we can find a size similar to 800X14. Theses radias are not whitewalls, just a portawall installed.

On my '59 Windsor I'm running Coker P225 75 R14 radials. I think they look good on the car and they drive nice.

I know some people have had trouble with Cokers but they've always worked out fine for me.

Greg, yes they do look great. That Coker 225X75-14 radial is the tire I got hooked on when I started my search for new tires for my F. I believe it's the only 225x75-14 radial available. I've heard both the pros and cons about the coker tires, even their bias ply tires, that right now I am kind of "ON Hold" for what I may purchase. Been running H78-14's for years and been really happy with them, but would really love to see how my F handles and rides with radials on it. thanks for the picture and your help, Walt

I agree with Wizard.

I have Diamondback's which are nothing but BF Goodrich tires with the whitewall added. They've been perfect in every way. I think they are 235-75/15's.

Hmmmm just one thought... the standard size for 1960 New Yorkers and 300 F were 9.00 x 14 super cushion tires on 14 x 6.5k rims. Saratogas and NY Town&Country rode on 8.50 x 14 on 14 x 6k rims (addressed by the 1960 service manual, chapter 22).

My Beast (56NY) rode on 8.00 x 15 tires on 15 x 6K rims. Actually mounted are 235/75R15 radials. IMHO the correct size for a 1960 NY and 300F is 235/75R14 Radial. Of course 225/75R14 is possible as well, but the outside diameter is too small. So you have to adjust the speedometer or stick with a ways too optimistic speed indication.

Happy Restoring!

Dieter

Dieter, here's the formula

Radial Type 235/70/15”
DW = 381mm : [Diameter of the Wheel (DW)15": DW = 15 x 25.4mm= 381mm]
HT = 164.5mm : [Height of the Tire (HT): HT = 235mm x 70% = 164.5mm]
OD = 710mm : [Overall Diameter (OD): OD = DW + (2 x HT) = 381mm + 329mm = 710mm (or 27.9")]
Overall Diameter measured OD = 708mm – I wonder how accurate (02).
CC = 2229.4mm : [Circumference (CC): CC = OD x 3.14 (pi) = 710mm x 3.14 = 2229.4 mm (or 87.7")]

A 235/75/15 tire has a total height of DW 381mm (15") + HT 235X75%X2= 352,5mm (13,86") = OD 733,5mm = 28,8” which is very close to a OEM 8.50 -14 Bias Ply tire, 730mm (28,74")

Hence a 235/75/14 tire has a total height of DW 356,6mm (14") + HT 235X75%X2= 352,5mm (13,86") = OD 709,1mm = 27,91” which is an inch lesser in total height, but totally acceptable.

The problem lies in to find a good, reliable 235/75/14 tire and even the 225/75/14 are rare to find. Now, if one demands whitewalls upon that, then good luck.

We need to get more feedback from owners that has the Diamondback tires.

Well, my 56 Firedome had F seris tires of 3 different mfgrs when I bought in '98. In '01 I replaced them with Coker 235 60R15's 2-3/4" WWW. These guys were Coker Classics. Took 6 weights to balance. They ran true & were smooth at hiway speeds up to 100 mph.

Obviously, tire shops wouldn't touch them as they were more than 8 years old. Leaks required Leak Stop so I could drive her gently around town but I knew I would need to replace them soon. I replaced them with new Coker AMERICAN Classics. While poking around on the Coker site & chating with their techs, I discovered that the Coker Classics I bought in '01 were made in Mexico while the Coker American Classics were made in the US.

Further investigating uncovered Summit Racing had these guys too & they had free shipping. That saved me $150 in freight. The American Classics were $50 each more expensive than the Coker Classics. Close enuff to breaking even.

Coker tech said that the wheel/tires needed to be balanced using a "Lug-centric" machine. I had the tires shipped to my local Big O where they were mounted & balanced. Mechanic remarked they required only 1 weight each. No "Egg Shaped" Wobbly/Untrue behavior. Haven't tried the 100+ MPH road test yet but 75 MPH shows no "Bouncy-bouncy" or any other bad behavior. I don't know the source of the complaints but I've had no such behavior on 2 sets of Coker WWWs & I wouldn't put anything else on the car.

We need to get more feedback from owners that has the Diamondback tires.

I have Diamondback radial tires on my car (don't have the model or size at hand).

I bought them in 2009, mounted them in 2013 and I ride them since last year. I've made 500 miles so far with them.
Beautiful tires, with no problem whatsoever in handling and comfort.

I have Diamondback tires on my 60 Saratoga, P235-75R15 with wires. The tires ride beautifully. However I've had nothing but issues with the whitewalls on the front tires getting bulges and separating from the tire right near the rim. Diamondback has supplied me with 2 new complete sets of front tires under the pro-rated warranty for the front wheels by this point, about 7 years since I got the first set of four tires. They keep telling me they have rectified the issue by trimming up the whitewall near the bead, but time will tell. Of course I Have had to pay the pro-rated fee each time, until I just had the last one shipped a few weeks ago, and finally they gave me one at no charge after I reiterated the whole saga from the time I bought the first set. Now finally one of my rear tires has started to get a bulge......It has been extremely frustrating. Each front tire has started to get the bulges after about 4000-5000 miles. ( I drive the car a lot - have put 28,000 miles on it since 2008). I got the first set of DB tires in 2010.

Hi Wizard

Thanks a lot for your information. But.... just FYI: From my answer I didn't know what the original size  of the blue streak 9.00x14" tires was (width (most probably 9"x25.4 =228.6mm), height of the tire in percent of the width; cc or od not calculable with unknown values). This was the reason I addressed more than one option as an alternative. Because my Letter is riding on a mixed set (205/70R14, 215/75R14, 225R70/14) mounted from my seller. Especially the 205/70R14 and the 215/75R14 are looking very tinny.

I know the formula very well - I calculated many times options (tire/wheel combos) for several preceeding daily drivers or the speed of the car in every gear of the transmission versus the engine speed.

I put a set of BFGoodrich Silvertown P215/75R15 with chrome wire wheels on wife's 59 Dodge. Balancing them has been challanging to say the least. One tire was sent back under warranty for bouncing and unable to get a good balance. They are a really nice looking tire and look great with the wire wheels. I chose the BFGoodrich tire because they offered a wide white wall. There is only about 200+ miles on these tires. I bought them at a local reputable tire shop just in case a problem occured, and it has. The last time ( and 3rd rebalance ) they load balanced them. That really helped, but around 65 MPH they still ride a little rough. The car handles well, OEM shocks and rebuilt suspension. I seriously doubt I will buy another set of BFGoodrich. I put a pair of Hankook on rear of my 69 D100 Dodge truck. Ever since then that truck acts a little squirrely in the back. Don't think much of those tires either. Maybe all this negative info may be of some help. Jerry

I have a 57 New Yorker...getting ready to put tires and rims on it....for some odd reason it currently has 15's on the front and 14's on the rear...I think its all the junk yard had at the time to fit a Mopar...i like the height of the 15's and it appears there is more selection available in the wide whites in 15's than in the 14's....can anyone recommend where to get plain ole steel 15" rims for our cars?? Will have to think about the tires...interesting debate above regarding tires...thanks, billy

If you don't care about originality, you can get some good 15" rims from Wheel Vintiques. Series 63 is the stock Chrysler wheel from the '60's. That's what I put on my '58 Dodge & '58 DeSoto, and what I plan to use on my '57 New Yorker. They have 15x6, 15x7, 15x8, 15x10. They work with original 15" hubcaps from '54-'56 too. I modified them to work with original 10" dog dish caps as well, instead of the 9" caps from the '60's. You can get them through Summit or Jegs.

Thanks Nathan....I just remembered that I have the original hubcaps for the car...might have to go with 14's after all...not sure ...cant believe 14" hubcaps would fit the 15" rims...

There are ways to make them work, but no, it is better to go with 14" wheels if you want to use the original hubcaps. I am going to use either '55 New Yorker caps or '66 Chrysler disc brake caps that are very similar to the '59 Imperial 15"caps. Aftermarket '57-'59 Dodge spinner caps are made in 15" too.

I'm going to run 15" because of the disc brakes that I want to use.

Fellow Forward Lookers,
Need some help...I see the formula above, but don't know how to back into it with OEM info...Here's what I have per the manual: Rims 14" X 6.5",,,4.5" spacing, 5 lug nuts,,Tires 9.00 X14"...what I need to know is, if I go to 15" tires because of the availability of wide whites, what size 15" tire do I need? I'm thinking 235R-70 or 75R X15....but need help from the group...How do I get from 9.00 x 14" to a diameter and current radial size?
thanks,
billy

The height of a 235/75/15 is very close to the bias ply diameter

I measured roundabout 730mm (28,75") on my old bias ply and a 235/75/15 is 733mm (28,86") in height
