Last week I needed new tires on my 56 CR D500. The tires that came on the car when I bought it in Sept were likely 25 years old. They had lots of tread but the wide white side walls were scary. Since I had purchased "cop" wheels at a swap meet in early October, I had the new tires installed on the cop wheels. I also had the old tires removed from the OE wheels and recycled.

When I saw the wheels I was surprised. I knew that somebody had painted them wedgewood blue over an a white but I thought that the white was not factory. HOWEVER, when I saw the wheels without tires, I saw that the inner portion of the wheels was painted white (off white- likely the three tone white roof colour). I found this confusing. I fully expected all black. One of the backsides of one of the wheels was black. (The others were rust).

Here are some photos of the evolution of the wheels on my car:

Found this in an advert for a 1956 Custom Royal. Shows the whiteness of the wheel rim. Car is not a D500 but it is gorgeous (same colors as mine and better paint)

I don't know if your 56 Dodge would have been the same as my 57 Dodge, but my 57 came with wheels that were light "misty" green on the outside that matched the lighter color on my car. I bought the car in 1978, and the wheels did not appear to have ever been painted since new. So if your 56 came the same way, the outside of the wheels would have been light blue to match the body color.

Maybe but I don't think so. Have a look at the lower lip of the wheel in the front of the line in this photo. It shows the off-white under where the wheel balancing weight had been located at some point before the wheels were painted blue (on the car - the read axle nut and axle were painted blue as well).

The picture of the wheel in the trunk of the '56 Dodge is correct. The wheels are initially sprayed with the "grey" (mix of all of the scrap colors), and then with the off-white/ivory around the outer section.

Here is an old pic of a crashed '56 Dodge that also shows how the wheels were painted.

Interestingly, that same photograph has a '57(?) Dodge Sierra with standard hub caps and what appears to be the body color wheel treatment!

I think the dog dishes on some cars were color matched. I've got a '56 Plymouth parts car that looks to have had dog dishes and some of the wheels are color matched and pin stripped to match the car.
