with a 57 front bumper.

For 30+ years this has been my daily driver in NYC.
Then a “ Wow, the odds of that happening must be astronomical “ event happened.
Which I don’t intend to type all out.
So now sadly it has to go.
The insurance will write it off so rather than have them send it to an auction here I thought I’d give people who care a chance.
I’ll probably get about 5500 from the insurance so any offers somewhere about there. See above, I’d rather know it went somewhere sensible.
It’s obviously not going to be driveable so transport to wherever is on you.
It’s located in Queens, NYC

There is a time & storage issue here so this will have to happen fairly quickly
I doubt if there are many more issues caused by the event but I’ll know better when I get a chance to go underneath properly when it stops raining

Body - Some bondo & looks OK from a distance done by me bodywork.
Custom interior done about 10 years ago

361 & Torqueflite runs pretty well. Needs an oil pan, that got crunched in the event.
Recored radiator last month it’s not the one in the pics

Issues after the event.
Frame crossmember - trashed.
Center link & tie rod – history
Steering box – finished.
Oil Pan – Not Good..

It was never a car show car and never will be but it was fun to drive and you could take it out in the rain & snow.

It only happened recently so I’ll do some better pics of the disaster area when it stops raining. Its quite away from my apartment.

If interested contact me at
Desinparkinglot at gmail dot com or PM me
Leave a phone # and a good time to call and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can and I can tell you more and you can ask questions

I'm not very good at pics on here
Maybe someone who knows better can edit them down in size

Here's the front end after the event
I'll get better pictures later today I hope
But it won't look any better and I'm sure you get the picture

Sorry about your loss. I hope you can find a good new home for it.

Pics here need to be in "jpg" format not "jpeg"
A simple filename change would have got your last set of pics to show up in the thread.
You can try this site to help with shrinking your other pics http://www.picresize.com/

Oh, shoot! I am sorry to hear it was knocked out of commission! I had seen some great pictures of your car a long time ago - so sad to hear about the loss of a daily driver De Soto in NYC!

Sorry to hear about the damages.

If I were in your shoes, I would collect the money from the insurance company, then ask them what the salvage value of the car is, generally it's well under $1,000, you can buy it back for the salvage price, then list it on here for a lower price, or part it out. you'll do way better this way.

Good suggestion. I did this with a hail damaged vehicle. It was a 94. I received $5200 for the car and bought it back for under $300.

Best of luck

Thank you gentlemen for your condolences.
It is indeed a bitter pill to swallow that due to successive administrations that has turned gridlock in the city into an art form,
has sold it's soul to tourists and corporate megaliths-we don't even have a sensible hardware store near me, let alone a parts store - that I was finally forced to admit defeat. I have been putzing around when I could over the summer and fall getting it ready to sell ( signs and posts on hereand the like were going up this week) and then some overpaid donut eating city worker is too lazy to do his job and for want of a better word - Whammo!!

Update: I was under it yesterday and while it's a long way from good it's not quite the nightmare it looked at first- close though,
but whoever gets it will be thankful for the little things

KcImperial - I don't spend a lot of time on forums to notice the details and am a bit frantic at the moment what with this and life. I was hoping someone would step in, you did, appreciate it.
I'll try and figure out the humongous ones as well at some point but if anyone need them particularly I can email them.

Lancer Mike. Is is sometimes 50 clicks/block but I never get to see the results. If you remember where you saw them let me know. I'd be sorta curious what people put up where.

Big M. I'm aware of the salvage issue and am thinking about it, but I still have to dispose of it when I have it. Time & space are issues here that you may not have to deal with in Ca. It was also put up here to see where the interest was for the future so I / whoever has time to consider.

Ray. Thanks for your input. If it was a 94 Pretzel SooperDooper ABCixyz with a few dents in it we wouldn't be here talking now.

I also have the option of suing the city as well. Something to fill my declining years so maybe my grandkids will get a nickel or two

Thanks for looking Mike.
Funnily enough someone else sent me that yesterday.
I had a very quick look around this morning and found this one too and maybe 2 others

If you find

I'd be curious.

Would a good solid Colorado 57 Windsor 4dr hdtp frame be of any use here?
I'd fix it, for sure.

Tony, if it comes to parting it out (which I hope it does not), let me be first one in line for that steering wheel. I will install it in my car and be proud as a pea****.

I am sorry to see that happen to your car. I think it's worth fixing! It has a really cool history. I like the way the hood looks without the bird, but with the DESOTO letters.

Best of luck to you!

Me too.
Maybe, but I'm not in a position to do it.
Never liked the bird so I took it off. I used to get a lecture every now and then from
know nothing idiots who saw one once maybe saying it was missing and I should go and get one.
Along with others comments on my modifications.
Ever notice a lot of people have plenty of comments of what I should do with the car if they had one.

Thanks

Sorry to see this happen, hope she goes to a good home.
I've been into these for over 50 yrs, and owned several '58 4 dr hardtops.
Given the existing damage and being a fairly needy 4 dr sedan if you want her sold and not scrapped it might be wise to take the insurance buyout and then try to sell her for more like $2-3K if you really truly want to see her saved, and it sounds like you do.

Fair enough, hasn't happened.

Currently in Central upstate NY, but have lived in MD, PA, NC and VT as well in those aforementioned 50 yrs and in that time had about 10 FL cars and over 100 vintage cars.

I believe I do recall seeing that Kingston DeSoto advertised, but being a NY car I'm always leery of structural body rust, and honestly for my purposes there are not a lot of cars that have been long-term in the Northeast I'd want to get involved with anymore, I've found it far better to buy cars from the Southwest and transport them, which I've done with the last 10 or so vintage cars I've bought. There are really decent unrestored cars from the NE but they are pretty rare.

What it needs? depends on what one wants, obviously the mechanical fixes, possibly NY rust repairs? Beyond that as far as one prefers to go with cosmetics. Me I'd fix it to what's needed to make it safe. but otherwise leave it alone and drive it, the best route with 4 dr cars these days. Exactly what I'm doing with my current car.

I'm at a loss here. Correct me if I'm wrong.
You've lived everywhere and had gobs of cars. I've no idea what happened to them, no need to tell.
You wouldn't go near my car as it might have NE Kooties. Or anything else within 500 miles
The "needy " boils down to what ever I feel it needs.
You're offering unsolicited advice about something I'm obviously dealing with, and tossing out arbitrary figures from your position of .....?
Was there something I missed that might have been useful?

Etc.

Thank you Steve.
I'm close to a figure with the insurance co, I think, I hope .
The city is another thing.
What I would like at this time is a place to put it off the street where its safe.
Possibly workable on.
As far as I can tell the damage is as shown. Possibly some wrinkles in there but not obvious and if there are you won't know till you get in there
A lawyer to help me with the city. However much of an icon it may be, it may tug on their heart strings, but not enough to do anything about it for the $ involved.
As of now looks like me v them.

must be a garage in brooklyn or the bronx or jersey...

There must be, maybe.
The short answer is, not that I or anyone I know knows of.
There is a NY Met area group on here I assume at least some have looked at this and if there is a Chrysler Chris in Canarsie, of a Fins Frank in Farmingdale they haven't made themselves known to me.

In the immediate spitting distance radius from me there are few to none. And fewer and fewer in the outer outer boroughs.
We are a city devoted to tourists and the wealthy and NYU students and their mums & dads. Who have little need of such things.
Space & $ are at a premium here. However sympathetic they may be nobody is going to tie up valuable space and time on a project like this
when there is far more money to be made tinkering with Toyotas and and burnishing Beemers, the rents ain't cheap. Ever if there were many of them over 40 who even had a glimmer of what to do with one. If there are any volunteers , hands up please.

From my position of extensive experience with these cars over yrs. Very few NY cars are not rotted underneath, so how about pics of trunk and floors?
If you want to own a car like that in the city, deal with the issues. My daughter lived on Columbia Heights in Brooklyn. NYC is not a good place to own a vintage car. My $.02

I don't think I or anyone would argue that NE cars have cooties. It's probably the #3 subject of monologue when people leap out and expound their knowledge of said cars to me.

If I had a pic ( I don't) , our could be assed to jack it up and take one ( I can't)
What would it prove
A) If there is none, I am very lucky and an outstanding takercarererer of my car.
B) If there is some, I am a bad takercarerer of my car and stand ashamed before my peers and you can say I told you so
c) There was some but it has been repaired. Everyone wins, you can say I told you so and I can say I'm a somewhat outstanding takercarerer of my car.
I'm still at a loss to figure out though what this has to do with anything I may need, there doesn't seem to be a line from here wanting it. With or without

If you want to own a car like that in the city, deal with the issues.

I have, for 30+ years. This is another or the last. We shall see.
Any particular reason for that statement, that furthers anything anywhere?

My daughter lived on Columbia Heights in Brooklyn.

Very nice. Don't get there much nowadays. There was a very good mechanics shop at the bridge end for many years till he was forced out to the boonies.
See post further back. Not a lot of cars with cooties for research around there though.

NYC is not a good place to own a vintage car.

I would know that, but I did it anyway. It wasn't that bad till they niced it up. And again it depends on what kind of vintage car you want.
Possibly your daughter might if she owned one depending on how long she lived there..
You are only passing on general sweeping hearsay, unless you were here and had one.

I have a complete, 1957 Windsor, 4-door sedan I'm going to post in about 5 minutes. Frame looks solid.

Thanks. As I said though I have nowhere to put mine, let alone another one.
Nor anywhere to work on either
