I am thinking that I might want a tach so I don't over rev the old D-500 girl. Found a thread about a 56 Fury Tach for sale that said:

The tach shown in the first frame is a legitimate Fury tach used in 56. Stewart Warner made these for Plymouth. I think the 56 Dodge D500 had a very similar unit, those flags look like the D500 flags don't they.

Nope . . . . never seen or heard of a factory tach for a D-500. The Fury's had a different dash than the other '56 Plymouths with a hole to house the tach, nothing similar exists on the '56 Dodge. Makes since though since the Fury was an actual model of car, whereas the D-500 was a motor/suspension option on the existing line of Dodges.

Too bad. I can see a tach like the Fury tach with the crossed flags (but without the "Fury" script) would be perfect for my D-500 optioned 56 Custom Royal.

There is an old brand out there with crossed flags. Check google or Epay. These 56 Fury tachs need a sender which never comes with the gauge part. The old Stewart Warner units needed a sender with batteries to work. Maybe new guts in an old tach is what you need.

There is this one (but it is kind of tacky (pun not intended):

I have one of those Fury Tachs that I purchased to put into my Savoy dash, but I am not sure I want to cut that big of a hole there, and dealing with the sender is a pain. For your Dodge, it seems that a column or dash mounted tach is what you want anyway, and it wouldn't require a special sender for it. So I would recommend that approach. You have a clock in your dash that most people find to be pretty useless in the days of cell phones and ipods, and hard to keep oiled & working. You could convert that into a tachometer. That would be pretty cool. The Plymouth and DeSoto used a clock that mounted on top of the dash that could be turned into a pretty neat tach too.

Nathan: Here's a thought: Buy a 52 mm or 110 mm ISP 0-6000 RPM tach for the guts and load it into your Fury tach shell (using the Fury tach face). Much more modern than the old system and no need for the special sender.

Just a thought.

Yeah, but the problem is that the original Fury dash is crap, plain and simple. With the tach there, they move the wiper switch all the way over to the *right* side of the dash! How are you supposed to actuate it, with a remote control? Fury owners I have talked to say that they have to install a foot-activated switch on the floor and use that to turn on the wipers. Also, the ignition switch is now above the steering column so that's not a great location for it either. Not only that, but I don't really want the tach down at the bottom of the dash in the first place! So with all of that, combined with the non-existent sender issues, I think I'll pass on cutting up my dash. If I do install a tach, I'll mount it to the top of the dash or on top of the column. If I point the dash clock more towards the driver, that might work well with a tach in place, but I think I would rather leave that one as a clock.
