Some time ago this transpired:

See sellers description regarding the muscle car statement. Steve.

Seller is Jeff P. in Santa Barbara. Any comments he might have made about being the original muscle car either came from the "Fear the Flags" article he sent me (and I thought I posted here) or email discussions that we had based on other magazine articles, etc. PS: Not even my wife could tell that this wasn't me driving his car:

Turns out that I never posted the "Fear the Flags" article. SO now I have (BELOW). If somebody has a better copy or knows where the original was sourced, please let me know. Chrysler300country.com is toast.

Glen: The 1956 D-500 single four bbl car intake manifold has a PN of 1731 515 so your theory (which is logical) doesn't work. The other thing is PNs and Casting numbers are not necessarily the same. Your 1634 285 doesn't show up at all. The 55 and 56 Chrysler 300 dual 4 bbl manifolds are PN 1731 686. The 57 and 58 non-fuel injection 300 2 x 4 bbl manifold is supposed to be 1733 477.

Remember that the 56 D-500 dual 4 bbl manifolds were aluminum and made by Carl Kiekhaefer's Mercury Marine. So who knows what the PN was (somebody not me)?

I just re-read that Dodge News Article before I put the magazine in its sleeve and tuck it in for the winter.

Cute (and misleading) phrasing:

"Tuned up, Not Tricked up" - implying it was a stock 56 Dodge.

Then they throw in "Danny (Eames) prepared his D-500-1 (Dodge) himself. The result was truly a stock car, tuned for the last once of performance, but not tricked up. A man could buy the duplicate anywhere Dodges are sold".

Hmm....D-500-1 = 2 four barrels, etc, etc. And either 276 hp or 285 hp, depending on who you want to believe. Not really "stock" but I would let that slide if they had just stopped there.

BUT no. Then they say this:

"Next day,...., Danny brought his 260-h.p. Dodge home in front of every passenger car on the beach". So now they are intentionally misleading the readers.

Not tricked up = single 4 bbl 260 hp. 2 x 4bbls and >276 hp = tricked up.

Whatever. Typical sales lies.

I can see if my D500-1 aluminum intake has a part number on it the next time I go to my garage, if you need to know. I do have this picture of it but that's likely the casting number and not the part number on top, if you can make it out...

Collectible Car October 1997 Long (12 page) article. I've scanned the pages as pdfs but had to use 100 dpi to keep it under 250 kB per page. I don't really like the results. Otherwise I would scan to jpgs at 150 dpi and then resize to get them just under 250 kB. Let me know if you want the higher res jpgs.

I have been informed by two FL forum members that the white and yellow 4dr sedan D-500 featured in the article above left the factory as a D500, not as a D500-1, i.e. the 2 x 4 bbl stuff was added later. This also apparently applies to the iron torqueflite, i.e. the car left the factory with a 2 spd Powerflite and the 3 spd torqueflite was added later.

Nevertheless, it is a very nice car. I am told that it still lives and is used in the summer to pull a vintage wooden inboard motor boat (on a trailer). The boat has 56 Dodge gauges. Cool.

This is the third of four articles that I will post this week. Tomorrow's is a boring September 1956 Consumer's Union review of the 56 Dodge D500. Like anyone cared what they said.

This one is from June 1993 Mopar Action:

Okay. You guys with 57, 58 and 59 D500s need to step up and post some scans of magazine articles about your cars. I never intended that I would be the only contributor to this thread. I was hoping to see articles about the 1957 325 D500 hemi and then the 58 and 59 B-block wedgehead D500s.

I've got more magazines with 56 D500 articles coming to me and I will post the scanned articles as the come - but I don't want to "hog" the thread just for 56 D500s. I hope that others will post articles about their later D500s.

Based on the information presented, I call balderdash on this one (must have been a sale on taxi cab paint):

I am posting just the D500-related pages here. There are two other pages, i.e. 56 Fury and 56 300B that I will post in the FL magazine thread.

One of two magazines that I got today.

This from the other magazine I got yesterday. The second page of the article is just there because the banner headline crossed two pages. I like the D500 advert.

Thanks. You're welcome. Glad somebody is enjoying them.

I was hoping that people with 57, 58 or 59 D500's would join in and post scans of magazine articles about their D500s here too. It was never intended to be just me and 56 D500s.

Do you have something that could be posted about 59 D500s, Serge?

Thanks for posting that Serge. Fun to read.

Now we need somebody to post up at least one 57 D500 and one 58 D500 article so we have all the D500's represented.

Found this while searching for something that I couldn't find Note that the 57 Dodge D500 was "Dynamite" but the 56 Dodge D500 was a "real bomb". I presume by 1958, the D500 was "Thermonuclear" (??)

While trying organize the area around my desk (and look for the "missing" 56 Dodge wagon brochure that I had not seen in months (found it)), I bumped into the D500 Brochure that I had previously scanned and posted.

This: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=67802&...

While paging the hardcopy, I rediscovered the page where it said "In the official N.A.S.C.A.R. speed trials at Daytona Beach, a Dodge D500 beat all other cars...regardless of price, size or horsepower...over measured mile from a "standing start". Since I remembered that a Chrysler 300B had the top two-way speed, I questioned that statement and looked for corroboration for/against that statement.

Found the answer (I think) in the May 1956 issue of Mechanix Illustrated in which Uncle Tom McCahill wrote about the Feb. 1956 Speed week.

First thing is the Chrysler Corp. copy writer probably should have mentioned that the record was for Domestic cars, not the world's cars.

Two pertinent bits from the article:

1. "The big events of the Speed Trials were the U. S. Production Car Flying and Standing Miles. The overall winner of the Flying Mile, two-way average, was Tim Flock driving a 300B Chrysler for a new record at an average speed of 139.373. Second in overall standing was Danny Eames driving a ’56 Dodge 500 at an average speed of 130.577 In the small car class, 259-305 cubic inches, Murray Hartley of Erie, Pa., on his first trip to Florida, ran away with the Division at an average speed of 121.335 in a 1956 Chevrolet. In the Women’s Division, Mrs. Vicki Wood of Detroit, driving a 300B Chrysler, set a new record at 136.081."

2. "For the Mechanix Illustrated Acceleration Trophies, one mile from a standing start, Danny Eames’ 1956 Dodge 500 just beat out Brewster Shaw in a Chrysler 300B when he ran the distance at an average speed of 81.786 against Shaw’s time of 81.762. In the under-305-cubic-inch class, a ’56 Chevrolet was very close to the top large cars and averaged 81.392, driven by Ned Decker of Sherwood, Ohio. In the Popular Price Class, Murray Hartley, whose ’56 Chev won the under-305-cubic-inch Flying Mile, also took this Division at the same time. In the MI trophy runs for Sports Cars, Chuck Daigh of Long Beach, Calif, ran away with the event driving a ’56 Ford Thunderbird at an average speed of 88.779, a new record."

I think the Danny Eames car was a D500-1 (i.e. the higher hp dual quad version, not the 260 hp single 4bbl version).

Still, good stuff.

BTW, the "trick" 2 x 4 bbl 56 Plymouth Fury was not forgotten:

"In the Sports Car Division, John Fitch of Stamford, Conn., won the event in a ’56 Corvette with an average speed of 145.543. This is a new American Production Car record but not a new Sports Car record, which is still held by a D-Jaguar that averaged 164 and a fraction in 1955. Also, Zora Arkus-Duntov driving a fully-modified Corvette won this event at 147.300. In the Prototype Class, Vern Haule of California averaged 147.269 driving a prototype Mercury, in spite of the fact that the car was experiencing slight mechanical difficulty. Another outstanding prototype car was the ’56 Plymouth Fury driven by Phil Walters that averaged 136.415, or just under three mph slower than Tim Flock’s record-breaking 300B. In the European Sports Car Class Howard Meeker driving an XK140-MC Jaguar won the event at an average speed of 134.078. Another interesting time was Phil Stiles in an Austin-Healey 100SM with an average speed of exactly 128."

One of our forum members, Hunter R., has had his very early build 56 Dodge D500 (engine number D500-1003 (3rd built)) written up in the Feb 2020 issue of Mopar Collectors Guide. He sent me the images below. They don't distribute the magazine in Canada so I've had to order directly from the publisher.

Anybody with the June 2009 issue of Mopar Collectors Guide and if so would you mind scanning the pages that cover Bill Allen's cloning (replica/tribute) of Lee Petty's D500-1? I am interested in seeing the article and especially anything to do with the wheels (for my forth-coming 56 D500 wheel post).

This is the cover (with Herb McCandless (Mike's dad)):

Hello All,
I stumbled over this site today and thought I would reach out. My Grandfather, Danny Eames passed away in 2012 and left me with all his automobile industry and racing memorabilia. There is an extensive amount of documentation, magazines and trophy's from Danny's days with Dodge that I have. I would love to find a home for all of these items so they can be shared and appreciated by Dodge enthusiasts. If anyone knows of a good home for these items or has some suggestions, please let me know.

Thank You,

Mike Zupanovich

Mike: There is a fellow here, Mike McCandless, who is the son of a well known Dodge drag racer, Herb McCandless (his photo is on a Mopar magazine a few posts above). Mike has developed
a large Mopar collection and is developing a museum to show the cars and memorabilia. If I was nominating someone to be the caretaker of Danny's
stuff, it would be him.

Mike McC? Are you out there?

His stuff needs to be in a racing museum. I don't think Mike wants to be a care taker of that kind of stuff.

Jimmy: Your resizing "worked" and I see three images. Thanks.

However at about 77 kB for two pages at a time, it is not readable.

To be readable, each page needs to be about 200 kB, i.e. 6 separate scans at around 1024 x 768 pixels each.

Hope that you can find the time to re-scan and re-post.

Hi all

First time poster here. Just wanted to thank Dave as well, his posting has been very helpful for me. I am trying to catalogue the 1956 Dodge range in a database, and the options were bewildering, especially the D-500 model versus later option pack.

When I am done, you will have another resource with power & torque figures for all the engine options, at least. Except maybe that Canadian 303 which I have only read about here and not seen official documentation for!

Cheers

Zak

When I am done, you will have another resource with power & torque figures for all the engine options, at least. Except maybe that Canadian 303 which I have only read about here and not seen official documentation for!

Zak: Before you go too far with your project, you should probably check all the 56 Dodge threads that I have started by using the "Search" button, "56 Dodge" in the subject line, "56D500boy" in the user name and "Search all posts" checked off. I think you will find that I have done quite a bit of want you want to do.

I am continuing to work on the 56 D500 info and have a lot of resources to work from. If I was you, I would wait until I have finished (or given up).

As for the "303":

"For the 1956 model year, Chrysler of Canada began building V-8 engines for the Canadian market. The Plymouth and Dodge used, first, the 270-cid V8 then switched to the 277-cid V-8. The 303-cid V8 shared much with the 277-cid V8, including the heads, and had a 3.81" bore and 3.31" stroke, compared to the 277-cid's 3.625"x3.25". It was used in Canadian-built Dodge Custom Royal and Chrysler Windsor models. Also, the engine was exported to Detroit for use in the Plymouth Fury, and no, it was not available in Canadian-built Plymouths or 115"-wheelbase Dodges in 1956.

...The 313-cid V8 was derived by boring out the 303-cid V8. Both had a 3.31" stroke, but the 313 had a 3.875" bore compared to the 3.81" of the 303. The 313 was introduced in 1957 for the Dodge Custom Royal, while the smaller Dodges and Plymouths got the 303. For 1958, the 313 V8 moved down to the small Dodges and Plymouths while the Canadian-built Dodge Custom Royal went to the 325-cid V8.

In the same years in the U.S., Plymouth used the 277-cid V8 in 1956 and again in 1957 for the Plaza. By enlarging the bore from 3.75" to 3.91", Plymouth got the 301-cid V8, used in all but the Fury in 1957. The Fury used the 318-cid which was the 301 stroked to 3.31". In 1958, the 318-cid V8 was used by all Plymouth V8 models, with a 350-cid ("B" block) optional."

Hi Dave

I think I have seen everything you've written on the subject here, at least, as well as using a lot of the materials you've so generously provided as reference. I'm already through most of it, including the export Kingsway models which aren't much spoken about on here. It's part of a much larger project I'm undertaking, which is to catalogue the specifications of all cars from every manufacturer.

Obviously, even after doing this for years, I have numerous gaps, and I just have to keep plugging away at them. My scope is also global, rather than just North America, hence the Kingsway models being included.

But thanks again for all your efforts, I just wanted to let you know that at least I appreciate them immensely!

Cheers

Zak

I ordered the back issue directly from Mopar Collectors Guide a couple of weeks ago. It finally came yesterday. Scanned it today. It's much easier to read when it is one scan per page.

(PS: The Herb McCandless Demon story is very interesting. Gives a whole new meaning to "double dipping". )

(PPS: I would have used the rust free Texas shell and swapped the VIN plate over - rather that getting Mopar Mel to fix the rusting hulk that the D500 engine came from)

Found this this morning while going through the box of Mopar mags that I was given. Mostly Gen 2 Hemi stuff except for this article.

56D500boy - 2019-10-28 1:15 PM While paging the hardcopy (of the D500 Brochure), I rediscovered the page where it said "In the official N.A.S.C.A.R. speed trials at Daytona Beach, a Dodge D500 beat all other cars...regardless of price, size or horsepower...over measured mile from a "standing start".

Just to follow up with newspaper adverts following the February 1956 Daytona Speed Week trials, I found these by searching Newpapers.com (on a trial 7 day subscription):

On my daily cruise of eBay looking for 56 Dodge stuff, I found this "article" (from somewhere), that a) is NOT written very well and b) contains a blatant error about the numbers of 56 D500s that were built. The writer suggests,
for reasons not comprehensible by me, that there were 40,100 56 Dodge D500s built. *IF* he meant Custom Royal 2dr Lancer hardtops, I *might* believe him but 40,100 56 D500s, "I don't think so Tim".

My engine number data base (always looking for more data) suggests something in the range of less than 7500 56 D500s engines were made.

The "offending" article:
