Location: The Mile High City | Yes, Doc. It is code PPP, solid Holy Red with a white convertible top and no mark under the CS section of the data plate, which indicates to me it would like very much like the two examples on the previous page. A red car with no lower trim and a white top. I am hoping someone with some photoshop skills can show what it would have looked like. Location: Parts Unknown | Most interesting ! I love stripper-looking cars, and I love weird builds. The combination of convertible and stripper is just too cool, but I would struggle with the aesthetically too high location of the single side trim, and the heavy look of an all-red car. My dislike of red cars is well known, but this IS an original red car, which is important, but I'd be torn in having such a pinnacle good looking car and not making the most of that, whatever "that" might be. This quandary would be much easier for me if it involved the 57 side trim .... I would go to monotone without a second thought. One thing for sure, if this car stands out in a crowd now, it would only stand out more as a single bar side trim/monotone car. I don't think I could stomach blackwalls on a DeSoto, but do you own a set of dog dish hubcaps for 58 DeSoto ? ??

Location: The Mile High City | I know the 1958 Plymouth order sheets strongly caution against ordering an all Toredor Red car. Red can be an overpowering color. Also, I should not claim that I know Ivan Jones gave it the white sweep, but I seem to remember him mentioning it. One of many interesting things about 1958 cars was the recession. The cars sat on dealer's lots so long, the dealers starting adding things on to make them look fresher! However, that mainly applied to the spring special trim items. Although, I would not put it past a dealer to occasionally add a sweep to a De Soto. I do NOT own a set of dishies for the De Soto - I have seen 'em on eBay at least once. I don't have an inkling to repaint my car just yet, but I'll have to really mull this over when the time comes.

Expert Posts: 3153 Location: NY & VT | Very interesting to see how it came from the factory! I think Ivan J was right to add the white sweep - usually I'm a stickler for originality, except for when a color change can make a huge improvement. In this case the white sweep really adds to the interest and breaks up the huge mass of red and accentuated the fin. I can see why the factory advised against all red! If'n I'd of ordered a new one, it would have been in pale Lilac metallic (like 1960 Cad color "Heather"), with white sweep and top, but they didn't have that! Location: The Mile High City | As the current owner, I have newver seen it any other way than with the white sweep. Thanks to Bill, it is fun to at least see how it may have looked when Orville Easton, the original owner, had it. This would not be easy to change back because of the trim holes, but there is some appeal to seeing your own car in a new way! I am not sure which look I like better!

Check your 1959 color chart under "Spring Special Colors". I cannot get my head past the red paint. I so deeply dislike red paint on cars, I cannot juggle a "better" arrangement that does not involve changing the color of the car. The single bar trim is neat and really unusual, but it ride disproportionately high on the body for a single rub strip. making not only a massive amount of unbroken red body, but also an awkwardly placed side trim. When I found the aforementioned 58 Sweep ragtop with the single bar trim, as much as I appreciated how bare bones and cool the car was, it was terminally a Firesweep, and was going to become a body donor for a Fireflite build, had I got my mitts on the title. Probably best that I did not. It deserved to be preserved as the odditiy it was. Edited by Doctor DeSoto 2018-05-20 9:48 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | Deciding on paint scheme for my '58 New Yorker. I was impressed with how good looking Rock Hudson's New Yorker is so I am leaning toward painting it the Spring Green color like his. I believe the original was Sandlewood Poly color that doesn't thrill me, and which isn't the color currently on the body. I am going to be painting the roof and firewall soon so I need to land on a scheme quickly. The Spruce Green roof like Rock Hudson's is nice, but a white roof might go with a set of whitewall tires better. A silver roof wouldn't be original, but might match the side trim better. What do you think? Elite Veteran Posts: 1112 Location: Wild Wonderful | The white just looks like every other car. The green adds some style. But, the silver makes it look sleek. I think the silver is more of what you were going for with this car.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | I am seeing your point Kurt that the white is more common, and it really doesn't work as well as I thought it would with the side trim so I think that one is out. If I wanted to stick with factory colors, I could replace the silver with gray, or maybe a dull metallic silver..... Black roof version. Interesting. I was trying to go for something lighter on this car, but maybe.... Expert 5K+ Posts: 6487 Location: Newark, Texas (Fort Worth) | I vote Spring green and Black top also. Is the silver trim paint or aluminum? If it is paint I might just paint it black too. If the windows are solex green tint; this would be a killer combination.

If it is paint, I would like to see the next photoshop with that bit black with the black roof. Should look good. In me 'umble opinion. Expert Posts: 3153 Location: NY & VT | Black with green looks excellent...isn't Rosy's 'Sweep that color? Doc - the DeSoto Heather Blue Spring color is very different, quite dark, I'm aware of it (have the chips), but here's the color I'd like: '60 Cad Heather... (see next frame) ... Chrysler had a somewhat similar hue in '60 also. Edited by firedome 2018-05-21 6:01 PM

Expert Posts: 3966 Location: DFW, TX | This photoshop is not my work. But WOW does it look nice. It's a '57 Imperial with a '57 Chrysler roof on it. That's pretty subtle! The front bumper is different too, it kind of meets the wheel opening like a '60 Imperial but it's still a little different. Location: Parts Unknown | Substitute "charcoal" (metallic black) for the black accent color. You get the same effect, just slightly softened, visually. Black is good, but tends to compliment more primary colors better, like red or turquoise, than it does the more pastel shades.
