My apologies to John Steinbeck.

January:

In the Denver area, we are usually able to drive our pampered old cars at least once a month. This is not the case all over the Rocky Mountain Region. Today, January 29, 2017, I drove the De Soto south on the valley highway to Palmer Lake and came home through Perry Park on highway 85. It was about a two hour trip - perfect for January! My driver side front tire has a slow leak - it is about time to replace it. I filled up the tank in Castle Rock, but I overfilled a little and gas splashed down the side of the car. I learned my lesson last year that gas can blister the paint, so I washed it with a couple buckets of water when I came home. It was a fun trip, but I have my usual complaints about local traffic - you have to practice your best defensive driving! Here are a couple of images from the trip.

Looking great! One of my favorite memories of Denver was the diverse winter weather. I recall washing my car in shirt sleeves on Christmas Day 1959...but I also remember a blizzard that left three feet of drifted snow and below zero inside our barracks when the coal fire went out that same winter.

Hi, Gary - yes, we had just gone through a cold snap of "stock show weather" earlier in the week. This weekend was wonderful: upper 40's yesterday and mid 50's today. I couldn't resist going for a drive. I got to thinking there a lot of places where folks don't get to drive their old cars much in the winter time. Palmer Lake was nice - there were fishermen and ice skaters enjoying the lake. I listened to some "old man" music on my CD player - the Great American Songbook. Some of those tunes really put a smile on your face!

Beautiful car in a beautiful setting... you're a lucky guy!
Many's the time I wish I still had my '58 NYer convert.
So fun to drive, even when the traffic stinks.
And even better with Sinatra &c on the radio!

Hi, Roger - thanks! I am lucky! I think there is exactly one "oldies" station left on the AM dial - and it usually plays hippie music from the late 60's. The overwhelming majority of AM stations are Hispanic with some religious stations sprinkled in for good measure. There are one or two sports stations and KOA AM 850 (news radio) has been around forever. I need to connect both antennae for better reception. Right now, I think only one is connected.

I really enjoyed living in Colorado when I was there. Lots of snow, and then it mostly melts away within a week. Perfect. Looks like a fun trip in an awesome car. I really miss the high Colorado mountains and Rocky Mountain National Park, but the California Sierras are pretty good too. My uncle used to be the mayor of Palmer Lake when I lived in Boulder and I visited him on numerous occasions.

Not much to report for February. I was able to get the De Soto out just once. I was going to take the Valley - C470 - I70 - US6 loop, but they were doing construction on the C470 by Park Meadows mall - no thanks! I should have driven to Golden for a Coors! Maybe in March.

Beautiful day, so sunny and nice dry ground!
Although almost schizophrenic, I really like the weather variety and sunshine out there. If not for the crazy sprawl, traffic density, and soaring prices we might have considered living close to our daughter. Luckily for us she's talking moving back to Vermont someday.
