Elite Veteran Posts: 963 Location: San Antonio, TX | I found this somewhat interesting. My 57 De Soto sedan has the day/night rear-view mirror. Digging in on my 4 dr hdtp finally and found it's mirror is tinted. The crazy thing is on the tinted one... the mirror is perfect. Not a spec, blemish or spot. I'll have to restore the housing of course. The sedan one is like most mirrors from 60 years ago. A little tired. Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13049 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | The normal mirrors are not hermetically closed, but very tight in comparison with the Night N' Day mirrors. That means that the backside of the mirror will be exposed for the ambient and moisture. As Mike writes above, a glass shop can easily cut out a new mirror for the normal types. For the Night N' Day types you'll need to get a slightly bigger mirror, like from a Mercedes Benz with a prism mirror and then have a glass shop to cut/grind it to size | ||

Expert Posts: 1906 Location: Ontario, Canada | I had a glass shop make a few day/night ones for my cars. It is beveled glass. Much thicker at the top or bottom (don't remember) than the other. I was told it was much cheaper to start with very thick mirror glass and grind the viewing surface down to the prescribed bevel than it was to remove the original glass (not easy) and polish the viewing surface if necessary and send it out to have the back re silvered. I broke the glass out of a bunch of them, restored the housings and had the glass shop grind them to a tight fit. They used the broken glass bits to gauge the bevel. They all worked fine! It is the silvering on the back that deteriorates. Greg | ||

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9666 Location: So. Cal | Here is a collection of mirror heads that I have. I am hoping for a better understanding of what applications each of them were used in. I have some idea, but I don't know for sure on many of them so any help would be appreciated. No's 1 and 7 are very similar, but No. 1 is polished stainless and No. 7 has a brushed finish. I had thought that these were used on '58-'59. Is the brushed version for '59 and polished for '58? Is the stem configuration on the brushed version for a Dodge/Plymouth? It sorta looks like my '58 Dodge setup, but being a lowly Coronet, it is just painted. I know the bottom is for a '57 Chrysler or DeSoto, but it doesn't match the head or stem. No. 2 is for '57-'58 for the standard mirror, or did '58 always have a stainless back? I know this was used on Chryslers/DeSotos, but was it used on Dodge & Plymouth too? No. 3 is for '57 only in painted form, correct? Did Dodge & Plymouth use this style as well? No. 4 is for '60-'65ish?? No. 5 with the flip switch and painted back is for '61- '62 Dodge/Plymouth only? No. 6 is for the '56 Plymouth & '57 Dodge truck for sure. But does it have other applications in '56 or in other trucks? Thanks for any help! It is painted and has this wire button thing underneath it that unlocks the position so you can move it to day or night. But it seems it may be missing the lever. Did this one possibly have a plastic flip switch like the '61 Plymouth version above? It is painted and has this wire button thing underneath it that unlocks the position so you can move it to day or night. But it seems it may be missing the lever. There's a plastic lever that mounts over the wire that can break off with age, etc and it looks like it has on yours. It has Day and Night on it. | ||
