Hi all, it's really been long time, no post. New work promotion, night shift...ugh, and generally no time. Plus daughter in college, 3rd year, gives me that Brooklyn Italian disease..Fundsalo.

This was done on my 58 Suburban. I was having problems with my hydraulic brake light switch, it wouldn't activate unless I really stepped on the brake. People were telling me I had no brake lights. I put in a new switch, worked better but started leaking in 3 months, put in another switch and it needed high pressure again to work. So with this antiquated design annoying me, I did an electric switch conversion.

I literally did this in less than 2 hours.

The parts you see are:

GM A body brake light switch, cheap, readily available, and gives you more than an inch of adjustability

Small beam clamp, cheap at Home Depot or Lowes, in electrical hardware, and a small bolt to contact the switch, you can use different size bolts for added adjustability.

Metal bracket to house the brake light switch. I was lucky in that I had a Manual Choke bracket lying around that fit the bill quite well. Just make sure the bracket is of sufficient gauge so it doesn't flex.
The pictures tell the story, I just love a happy ending;]

Oh and Some wire and connectors. All is hidden from view, unless you drop something and look under the dash..now the purists are mad.

Nice! I did the same thing on the De Soto - that's the way to go. I think there are several threads of other members that have done similar conversions.

Beautiful! Exactly what I needed exactly when I needed it. Why did you switch from the stove bolt to the hex head? I assume that you tapped the beam clamp for the bolt, it seems to be ground off flush with the inner surface of the clamp.

I did this conversion also on wife's 59 Dodge. I got a similar type switch from NAPA and fab'd a bracket. I set the switch plunger to contact directly to the brake pedal arm. As soon as the pedal goes down far enough to take up that little bit of free play, the brake lites come on. I'm happy with it. Jerry

Well, it was exactly when I neeeded it but not exactly like his. I don't know what year FL car shown is but mine is a 56 Desoto Firedome. Not the same, however thanks for the inspiration. I used the same switch & beam clamp but the rest of the bracket was different. Mine is mounted on the side of the Steering Column mounting bracket. Tuff to get there because of the seat, door & steering wheel but I got it done. I hope this inspires others to try this route rather than to replace the Brake Swith found on the Master Cylinder as it will only fail within a year

Later.

This is how I did it in my '56 Plymouth. Much simpler, but requires welding upside down under the dash, which isn't too fun.
