I noticed at idle that the pulley wobbles a noticeable amount. I don't think it's normal but before I condemn it I wanted to see if this indeed is a problem. Thanks.

wobbles because its bent? Many pull these off and bend them or is the shaft loose?

You didn't mention which car, but I assume the 63 Imperial?

Some wobble on these cars is normal. It really depends on how much.

Starting in 1961, Chryslers have a "floating" power steering pump bracket that pivots on the bottom bolt. For people who aren't familiar with this design, it can look very weird and is often misunderstood. The concept of this design is that when the pump is under load, the resultant torque self-tightens the belt and prevents slippage.

This video explains how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boTnyF4n4TY

Some things that could cause it to wobble excessively:

1. Loose belt - if your tension adjustment is out all the way, your belt may be stretched and require replacement.

2. Low fluid level - causing pump to pump air.

3. Missing rubber snubber on the bracket. http://www.moparmall.com/Power-Steering-Pump-Snubber-for-1960-1966-...

4. Bent brackets.

5. Badly worn pivot bushings on the bottom pivot.

There is a tool available for adjusting belt tension. Personally, I've never needed to use any kind of tool or pry bar. I think the tool would be convenient, but at least in my own experience, I've never needed it. I just reach down and grab the pump by the bottom and pull upwards on the pump (like it shows in the video) then tighten the adjustment bolt. You don't need to get this belt banjo tight.

If you choose to use a pry bar, be careful. it is very easy to dent the pump body and I have seen at least one pump destroyed by someone using a pry bar.

Thanks for the replies. I resealed the pump and closely inspected everything. Like stated above, someone bent the pulley at some point.

They get bent using a puller on the outer edges of the pulley. I ruined one that way.
