I have a 58 Plymouth with the 318. I have an intermittent starter problem, not sure as to the cause:

The starter will engage the engine, crank the engine, and then disengage after about 10 seconds of cranking; I can hear the starter continue to turn, whirrrr. It only does it once in awhile, as of now, it only does it when the car is cold.

What could be the cause? I doubt the battery is at fault, it's only 9 months old and is always on a trickle charger.

The Bendix drive is weak. Some claim that cleaning it will solve the problem but it never worked for me.

Thank you, 57 Chizler, I'll take a look at that. Agreed, cleaning it most likely won't work.

Does anyone have a list of the steps needed to replace the Bendix drive?

The procedure is in the factory service manual; download a copy here:
