Veteran Posts: 147 Location: Mandurah, Western Australia | Can someone please explain how the air flow works from the front air scoop to the windshield on the 55-56 Plymouth/Dodge? My Suburban has no heater installed, just a delete plate. When I look along front of dash I can see a gap with checkerwork all the way around and I assumed this was the defog air. But I have just installed a pair of foot operated vent doors on the rectangular openings under the dash, and with them closed I cant feel any air getting to the windshield, and it fogs up pretty quick. If I can get this to work I plan to graft a local HQ Holden heater into the delete plate so we can get some heat. It gets a bit cold and damp in south west WA in winter, no snow tho, even frost is rare! Jim | ||

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9855 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Can't help directly but I did find out on my 56 Dodge, the defrost air is in a separate channel. Mine is powered by a fan, separate from the heater fan. The fresh air door let air into the cabin when they are open and the cowl vent is up. I took the heater delete plate off last night (why do they have to put one bolt inaccessible behind the transmission linkage??) and there is definitely no connection between the vent air box and the defroster channel. I finally found a diagram of the heater in section 1 of the parts manual and it looks like the heater/defroster air came out of a separate heater box which is located where the steering column and brake master cylinder are on my RHD car. There appears to be a flexible pipe which would go to the defroster channel I imagine. So maybe thats why no heater on mine, there is no room. I cant see any nozzles under the defroster channel where I could pipe air in but its hard to see up behind the steering area. There may be one there. | ||

Veteran Posts: 147 Location: Mandurah, Western Australia | Today I removed the front seat so I could get under the dash on drivers side, and found there is an inlet nozzle to the defroster channel in the right corner of the dash, with nothing connected to it. This would be where the heater is normally connected. I am going to run a flexible duct from the vent chamber to this nozzle so I can send fresh air to the windscreen. It needs to be about 60 mm or 2-1/2 inch diameter and 2 ft long, and has to wind around the park brake lever, the steering column and the brake pedal mounting, and not foul the windshield wiper linkage. No worries mate! I have sourced flexible ducting from a local parts store, and bought a 60mm hole saw to cut the hole in the firewall. I have made up a 60 mm nozzle to go in this hole and attach the duct. Veteran Posts: 147 Location: Mandurah, Western Australia | I finally got a spare day Friday and cut a 60mm hole in the firewall next to the right vent flap and pop riveted a nozzle into it as my mig has returned to its owner. Managed to route the flexible ducting thru to the nozzle on the windshield defroster channel. On Saturday we joined the local club in showing our vehicles at a nearby country fair. There was a good flow of fresh air to the windscreen so that is another problem solved, many thanks to this forum. Veteran Posts: 140 Location: Simi Valley, CA | Hello, I'm kind of having the same problem on my 55 Dodge CRL hardtop. My car was a heater delete car that when I bought it. Their was a small box type heater in it. I have since installed a small Hurricane AC,Defrost unit in the front under the dash and tied it to together with a rear AC unit(all black car) from Classic Auto Air. With the front and back AC it cools pretty good. However the defrost works lousey. I used a flex hose to connect to the defroster tube on pass side under the dash, but it only defrosts the passenger side. I guess according to the shop manual the original defrost system had its own fan to have enough volume of air to defrost the whole windshield. I'm considering installing another defroster tube to the underside of the dash on driver side. However it means a lot of work! Another Idea is to install a original defrosted and motor to hopefully solve the problem, it means that I will have to reroute the connections of the Hurricane unit, which also means a lot of work. With all that being said, does anyone have any other Ideas? Thanks, Ernie Baily | ||

Ernie Baily The reason I posted the diagram was so you would realize that the factory pushed air through the single defroster tube into the integral/part of the cowl structure plenum *and* therefore, the easier solution is to add a fan. Something like a marine 12V inline duct bilge fan. Probably a 3". Or maybe a computer cooling fan? http://www.ebay.com/bhp/12v-blower-inline | ||

I would install it so that it comes off switched power (of the ignition switch), then an inline fuse and then an on/off rheostat/potentiometer so you can a) turn it on/off but b) control the airflow (and noise) to what is needed. http://www.ebay.com/bhp/potentiometer-switch Good luck. | ||
