Another convenient trick to gain better access to master cylinder is to compress and clamp the bellows. To do this, you'll have to remove the clip and pin that attaches the brake pedal to the master cylinder pushrod. You still don't have full access, but at least you can see what you are doing. Expert Posts: 1316 Location: Belgium, 40 miles south of Brussels | I strongly suggest to add a remote jar with a tube and a funnel to the MC, as I did. Not being able to easily see the brake fluid level is way too dangerous in my opinion. Just my 2 cents. | ||

Veteran Posts: 253 Location: Victoria Australia | Not only is it dangerous not being able to see the fluid level as mentioned above but it is also dangerous having only a single master cylinder. I had a bad experience were one of my front brake hoses let go. Was in heavy traffic doing 70 kms in the middle of three lanes and a red traffic light up ahead. Put foot on brake.....nothing. Pump brakes.....nothing. Tried park brake..... could not pull her up. Ass end of car in front approaching fast..... see dollar signs $$$$. Looked to the right....... lane full of cars. Looked to my left.....existing gap but being closed up. No choice, took a chance cutting off the car.... not hit but copped an ear full of horn. Now in left lane..... lucky again, no cars in front of me but now heading towards intersection. Traffic crossing intersection was light so was able to make a left hand turn without incident. Rolled to a stop..... counted my luck stars. Two guys arrive home from work and show interest in my car as I am stopped in front of their house. Told them what just happened, next thing you know one of them is under my car temporarily fixing my car so I can get home while the other gets me a drink. A little while later I was on my way but not before thanking them with a case of beer I had in my boot. Next day I had a brake specialist inspect my brakes and repair damage., told him to change all the hoses. Upon inspection of existing hoses he said there is nothing wrong, they all look new. Few days later I replaced my single master cylinder with a dual one..... Tread your own path. | ||

Extreme Veteran Posts: 397 Location: Milano, Italy | Adding a transparent jar was a good idea to me. I did it the first moment I got the car. I just hooked it beside the brake bellows and welded a piece of tubing on the master cylinder cover. Easy. Moreover I picked a jar that had a float and a switch for a warning light. I put a big yellow side indicator light at left of the steering column and that saved me, my car, and my bank account a couple of times in thirty years of driving. | ||
