Fellow Forward Lookers,
I need a pair of mufflers. I bought the entire exhaust system probably 5 years back. Went with the Alum pipes at the time. Mufflers have split and both need replacing...Any suggestions?
Thanks,
billy

5 years ago, what company did you buy the parts from? They very likely also offer suitable mufflers. Any local muffler shop can install or sell you something from inventory. They need inlet and outlet pipe size dimensions and the overall length of the old mufflers or take in your sample.

I buy systems from Waldron Exhaust, the oldest and must reputable supplier to the antique car hobby. First bought from them for my '38 Dodge fifty years ago !

I would get the longest mufflers you can get and fit in the car. Dynomax, which is mostly equivalent to Walker, makes good mufflers that flow well without being too loud. I bet you could fit a good 24" long muffler under there, but you should measure it out first.

What is funny is that I needed a good muffler for my '58 Dodge because the original one under there was falling apart. I had a pair of short "Race Pro" stainless mufflers made by Pypes that I pulled out of my Barracuda, because they were too loud. But I welded them end-to-end and inserted them onto the single exhaust on my Dodge. They sound really nice and quiet now.

I jus ordered two AP 6533's off the bay for my C. $30ea. w/free shipping
They were what was put on back in 89 when the entire system was replaced.
Car backfired while starting yesterday and blew the bottom out of one of them.
The baffles were already rusted so they were both on the way out anyway.

I put a pair of 24" Cherry Bombs, 2' " in and out on wife's 59 dodge. They were very slightly used 20 something yrs ago. Been laying around here ever since. Had nothing to lose so I tried them. There is a slight rumble noticeable when walking around the rear of the car. I really expected them to be much louder than that. Have a 1976, 360 eng with 9.3 compression. Jerry

Thank you Fellow Forward Lookers for the info....the story takes a rather unfortunate turn yesterday...decided to drive her to work for the 1st time. About a 40 mile drive 1 way...was a little loud but not crazy...remember that split muffler I mentioned? Heated up the floorboards and set the carpet on fire in the back seat...for those of you who remember "Up In Smoke" with Cheech and Chong...you can imagine my morning..pulled into a furniture store and borrowed their fire extinguisher....nice 12" hole in the carpet and fire extinguisher powder everywhere...called triple A, Flat bedded her home and was 3 hrs late to work....mufflers are going this weekend...billy

Wow, that's a lot of heat coming out of those. I set the back seat of my New Yorker on fire too while I was welding the hole up in the roof sail panel. That old cotton batting is great for starting fires! Fortunately, I got it put out pretty quickly.

The current split muffler/resonators are 29" long plus the inlet and outlet...I bought the whole aluminized system from Kepich Exhaust September 2012...Looks brand new still, but resonators are blown out the top side next to the floor board...

I also have used Waldron exhaust. They have exact fit mufflers that they will make to your level of "noise" wanted, stock or a little bit louder. They will also make your exhaust system and/or mufflers to your specifications. Good company.
