I've seen these brake drums for sale and they look good but I have a question. The original drums for these cars have the drum staked on to the hub or vice versa. The drums offered for sale don't come with a hub. How would one go about transferring the old hub onto the new drum?

I'd like to know as well.
I fear there would be centering and securement issues.
They would have to be machined to tight tolerances to fit properly and be centered and balanced
If you notice, most OEM drums have balance weights welded to them.
Would sure like to hear from members that have successfully mounted these on OEM hubs and are pleased w/the results.

I remember Neil wrote about these drums and if I recall correctly, he bought and used them.

For to change the drums, the studs needs to be pressed out completely, preferably in two steps;

Step 1
Press down all the studs 1/8" and remove the drum. Grind off all the residue of the old swag or cut the studs.

Step 2
Press out the studs completely and press in new studs.

Now the new studs can be swaged or not. I recommend not to swag the studs - the drum can then easily be removed for barke service.

To remove drums with swaged studs you need a special cutter to avoid damaging the hub. I agree, once the old drum is removed, don't swage the studs.

I have the 11" x 2 1/2" Front & Rear Brake Drums -- Brand New -- and the 12" x 2 1/2" Brake Drums -- Brand New -- Years ago, I had Brand New Hub & Drums -- but they are long gone (sold) and I had them
long long after everyone else had already sold theirs...... there are N O more NEW Hub & Drums to be obtained in the New ++ N.O.S. ++ world......
Whenever I sell Drums that require a Hub & Drum Changeover -- I give the buyer a two-page sheet on how to do Hub & Drum Changeovers.... The old drum must be PRESSED off the existing Hub & Drum --
and the Hub must be remounted to the New Drum...... It is ALWAYS a good idea to use NEW Wheel Studs -- and if the old Hub & Drum's studs were paened or swaeged -- then one M U S T use NEW Studs....

You are always welcome to call me -- Craig -- 516 - 485 - 1935.... Long Island, New York..... or if from overseas, e-mail me at mobileparts@yahoo.com

Are there any of us who are actually running with brake drums that are not staked to the hubs? If so, what is your experience?

The reason I ask this question is that I tried using an unstaked drum back in 1979 on my 1964 Chrysler 300K. The results were not good. For some reason, that brake always ran hot no matter how I adjusted it and I burned up the linings up in short order. I never knew exactly why it didn't work, but replacing the drum with one that was properly staked to the hub solved the problem immediately and permanently.

I'll admit it's certainly possible that my problem was something else, but based on that experience, I have always assumed the drums on these cars must be properly staked onto the hub.

I'd love to hear from anyone else's actual experience.

I have driven for a couple of years with both the front and rear drums modificated for fast removal. No problems at all.

First, countersink slightly in the two holes of the drum (later, fill the countersink with red paint) for balancing reference.
Just take care when the studs are pressed out, but just 1/8" - this way you can reuse the old studs and not destroy the hubs.
Once the drum is off, carefully grind off eventual remains of the stake and carefully grind the holes in the drum round.
Do NOT grind the center hole.

Depending on the drum's manufacturer, some of the drums have a center hole that doesn't fit tightly on the hub and will have a little run-out depending on the drum's position when the lug nuts are tightened. (pulsating pedal or running hot)In this case the studs have to be swaged and the drums turned. I ran into this years ago but not in recent years.

On the subject of removing the studs, whether pressing or driving them out, if the swaging isn't removed, the swages can, and often will, enlarge the hole in the hub to where new studs will be loose in the hole. I'm quite anal on this subject because I've run across a lot of loose studs that were welded to the hub as a hillbilly repair....do it right and don't risk this damage.

Thanks' for that info, really good to know! I still havent seen that type of drums.

I totally agree with you on how to remove the studs, that's why I never remove the studs from the hubs. I only press them down sufficiant for to free the drum, the press them back in position again.

Why don't you try a local auto parts store. Take the drum with you to see if they can match it

I just purchased 2 sets of these 12" drums for my '57 Chrysler from Kanter for $300 with free shipping. That equates to $75 each total. When looking at the cost of Ebay versions at $150 each with shipping cost, I was seriously considering swapping out the axle for a later unit or converting it to disc. It doesn't make sense to spend $300 on 2 drums, but I can handle $150. They also have 11" versions for sale too.

Here is a great how to article regarding separating the drum from the hub.

I sell tons of used drums because of out of round and non-centered hubs with these Chinese drums. Be sure everything is done precisely to avoid these types of problems, or pay a reputable machine shop to do the work and guarantee it.

Just my two cents.

Thanks for the advice John. I will be sure to make some measurements on it when I put it together. If the drum is out-of-round, I will send it back, but if it is a problem with centering on the hub, I think i have a way to solve that. If these end up being a big pain in the neck, I will probably convert to disc brakes in the rear with the AAJ kit.

Seeing as I have 12" brakes on my 56 Dodge D500 and have issue with the brake drum/hub on the right rear, that article and Nathan's Kanter suggestion are both great. I captured the article as WORD doc and saved it in my brake folder. I will have to check out Kanter for 12" none-hub drums.

Thanks guys.

We do this all the time in my shop. You need a tapered adapter for the brake lathe to do this properly, for the rear drums.
