I have a 1959 DeSoto Fireflite that I am having issues with one of the brake lights on. The left side works every time - tail/brake/signal - just the way it should. The right side always works with the signal and taillight, but the brake light only works if the left signal is on OR I put a little pressure down one the signal switch (towards left signal postion). Before I tear into the column or spend money on a new signal switch, has anyone encountered something similar and is there an easy fix? I am very mechanically apt, but less so when it comes to electrical.

Thanks in advance!

I would, first of all check that the correct type of bulbs are installed and that they have proper contact and good ground.

I would check the ground to the bulb. It could be that the turn signal is providing a different source of ground to make the brake light work. It is a long shot, but a lot easier to try. Most likely, though, it is probably a centering problem on your turn signal switch. You probably need to open it up and re-center it.

I believe I had checked bulb type at one time and tried different bulbs without success.

I took off the steering wheel this weekend and I noticed that there seems to be some white corrosion. A good cleaning, both at the socket and up at the signal switch, will probably be where I start. Powerflite, can you elaborate on the "centering" process? I have attached photos showing what it looks like.

Also, does anyone know exactly what the copper/brass tab (seen in the last photo) is for and where it goes? Mine was laying loose in the column when I pulled the wheel. Could this be a source of my problem?
