It's official, my Chrysler arrived last night from Ohio. First impressions: very good!

More to follow, but a few quick pics:

Dan, very neat car, great color, I am envious. Keen to see and hear more about your new car. Well done, and welcome to the gang.

What's your plan for the car?

Steve.

Hi all,

Thought I'd give a quick update on this car, and ask a few questions. First off, have still driven it only a few times so this is first impressions.

Overall car pretty much as expected:

Body: paint looks very nice, 15 years old and above average quality - looks like they removed most but not all trim pieces when re-spraying so I do see a few areas that bug me. But really does look great. No rust bubbles anywhere which after 15 years is pretty reassuring as to what's under the paint. Undercarriage looked great as they were pulling it off the trailer.

Interior: Again, very nice driver+ condition. Minor wear on door panels, some stains on headliner but not bad.

Engine: 383 4bbl, looks very stock and maintained under the hood. 68K miles, my guess is it's never been gone through. Super cold blooded, so choke probably isn't functioning right; and some hesitation here and there but again decent driver quality.

Other: Brakes spongy but solid with a pump - may need to bleed or more. Steering sloppy-ish but tolerable. Drives and brakes straight so at least not stressful. Lot of rattles! need to chase these down. Heat / AC controls very stiff probably seldom used over the years. AC not cold but looks very complete under hood.

A few minor projects, in addition to tweaking tune-up items:

Gas gauge in-op, so prob need to pull the tank to get at sending unit (if like other cars haven't researched)
Brake lights in-op, looks like corroded and one broken connection at the hydraulic switch on the MC - weekend project!
Trunk key doesn't work, need to get out my Mopar key collection and see if I can get it open. Who knows what's in there!

A few questions:

* Transmission: OK, so there is obviously no park and I rely on parking brake? Also, heard that shifting to D before going into R is desirable due to the high fluid pressure when shifted into R - is this true?

* Heater: Is there no fan speed control, or am I just missing it?

* Rattles (aka body /doors) - are these common?

More later. Enjoying the car though! The car also has a fairly old (80's) PA system in it, which does has a mic/PA system, various siren sounds, and animal sounds. The last feature is the favorite of my daughters who have been terrorizing the neighborhood on our few test drives....

Hi Dan, Sounds all in all like you got a good one!!

My steering is a little sloppy too, there is an adjustment screw on top of the steering box that sometimes works to tighten it up if it hasn't gotten completely worn out.
If you can't get in the trunk with a key, remove the back seat and unbolt the latch from inside. If you need keys made send the lock cylinder to me, I own a locksmith business and know these locks inside/out. https://www.acmesafe.ca/services/vintage_auto_finished_projects.html
As to the trans, there is no park position so you have to rely on a very well adjusted parking brake. It's my one beef about these cars! I shift into D first when the car is running on the choke, before shifting into R.
Rattles are common on the hardtops, I got most of mine out.
Heater Control: On the Factory A/C equipped cars the fan speed is controlled by pulling the lever in and out, there are 3 detent positions I believe.

Do your gauges and needles all light up?

Ian - Thank you for the info! Yes, pulling on the temp slider changes the fan speed, don't think I would have ever figured that out. I'll keep you posted on the trunk lock situation thx.

Luckily, all interior lights seem to be working. Was worried that the electroluminescent lights wouldn't work, and they didn't when I first turned on the headlights - didn't come on until I cycled the dimmer dial back and forth about twenty times until I found (or created) a spot that made a connection. Now everything is on, altho the temp dial section has a loose connection, and about half of the lights around the ign key are out. Pretty good start though.

Managed to get the trunk open, must have had a stuck tumbler in the lock as key worked with a little lubricant.

Nothing too exciting in there, nicely trimmed truck though. The spare is certainly ancient - OEM tire by any chance?

Just got my vintage plates on the car, WA state allows period-correct vintage plates in lieu of a modern "collector" plate. Also found this cool matchbook from Ohio Desoto dealer in the car

Dan, looks like the original spare tire! Nice! Glad your astra-dome works. If you want any work done on it or the gauges, Jeff Carter of JC Auto in Linwood is the expert on them http://www.jcauto.com
Looks like you need to buy this: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/1960-Chrysler-Owners-Manual-User-Guide-Refer...
As to the light around the ignition lock, there is actually only one bulb in a casing around the ignition switch.
We're not allowed to use period licence plates here in BC, just collector plates. Too bad as the 1960 BC Plates match my car color.

Ian, thanks again. Have the reference manual - but I'm a guy; since when do I actually read the instructions?? Seriously just found it buried in the glovebox.

Dang too bad you can't run your vintage plates up there; they'd look perfect. I guess WA government is still doing one thing right. Emphasis on 'one'!

On a different note, think a busted the "off" button on the HVAC controls today trying to cycle it through it's paces and loosen it up. F-word. That's a tomorrow problem. We went and cruised the beach, and for a while one of my daughters swore that the AC was on, so it's possible that system is working. Until I broke everything.

Dan, there's linear triangle cams inside the pushbutton/vacuum unit. With time, they become soft and mushy - this is the reason for binding buttons. It's possible to open the unit and make new cams....

Well, brake lights are working that was obviously a must-work featurefor any driving beyond around the neighborhood!

Rattles seem to be mostly windows in both door rattling when rolled down - need new felts. Any supplier recommendations? I know I've bought several conv top/door/trunk gasket kits with felts from I think Steele Rubber but its been a while.

Wizard, thx for the input. Pulled the push-button unit out a bit just to get a look and see two probs w/o opening it up: broken socket for the left-most (OFF) button; and backing plate seperated on same side.

And, no amount of coaxing is getting any mode to engage (ie activate fan).

May just bite the bullet at buy a NOS unit (found one for $375 still in box w/o searching too hard), but thats pretty steep...

Taking her out again for a cruise later today so hopefully it's settling in to being put back into service and will stop breaking in every spot I touch

Have another question for the Mopar experts here:

Since I repaired the bad wiring for the brake lights that attach to the (presumably hydraulic) switch on the bottom of the master cylinder, it appears that my brake lights don't always shut off. As in, when I park and shut the car off, sometimes they remain on. Presumably they may be doing this in driving situations as well but of course can't exactly from the driver's seat on the road.

How did I figure this out? Dead battery of course, and also when I was leaving a restaurant with a date!

Any ideas what is causing this? Obviously the switch on the MC may be bad; although also the brakes are a bit spongy - so there may be air in the lines and/or the master cylinder needs to be honed out and gaskets replaced.

Any advice? Thanks!

The hydraulic switch is faulty (or someone used synthetic brake fluid, which tends to kill the hydraulic switches). The best thing is to mount a mechanic switch instead - more easy to service and it will give you some milliseconds earlier brake light, which could avoid an accident. Also, the mechanic switch could be adjusted so that you can light up your brake lights without applying the brakes. Good if someone is driving too close to your rear.

As for your vacuum switch, the damage pushbutton base could be exchanged with Another used one AC or non-AC will fit. Just drill up the melted studs and pry up the "lid" carefully. Mind how the 3 triangle linear cams are mounted - at least 2 of them are damaged and needs replacement.

When you mount the lid, drill small holes for screws used on models and/or hobby trains.

I mounted a mechanical brake light switch and bracket on mine after I converted to a new dual master cylinder with front disk brakes. My switch is a typical 1962 Chrysler mechanical brake light switch custom mounted to hit the brake push rod knuckle under the dash. I just ran the wires from under hood back through the firewall to the new switch.

Thanks for the brake light switch advice, I ordered a '62 chrysler mechanical switch this morning. Still looking around for options on the HVAC push-button box; appreciate the idea of rebuilding using parts out of another one def. cheaper - although my track record of "fixing" small, complicated things is fairly poor, they usually end up more broken then when I started

I had to make a small mounting bracket for the pedal switch to hold it in place. I have a spare working heater control I could possibly sell. I'll check tonight and see what shape it's in. These things are pretty common, I've seen LOTS of them go through Ebay.
Here's one http://www.ebay.ca/itm/1961-Chrysler-Push-Button-Dash-Heater-Contro...

Thanks gents.

RE: brake switch, the one I bought appears to have some kind of bracket on it but I'm assuming there is going to be some bracket making in my future as well. If anyone has a photo or a manual reference (have not gotten the entire shop manual yet) that they were able to share in a spare minute that would be great! [EDIT: nevermind, found your post Ian. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=60202

RE: heater push-button unit, I have also seen many on ebay, but not the ones with air - which look pretty different considering the fan speeds are buttons vs. the lever (ideally would like to just do a swap). I've found a NOS unit with

Ian, presumably your spare is for a non-AC car? Arland, is your '61 NY item from an AC Car?

For a direct swap, looking for P/N 2096084, or 2587564 which I'm pretty sure superseded it a few years later according to some research...

Thanks again!

Dan, yes my unit is for a Non-factory AC car. Not sure about Arland's. He added factory A/C to his 61 NYer. I had to make an adapter bracket to mount the bracket that came with the brake light switch. here are pictures.

Dan,

There is a great NOS supplier right in your neighborhood! Old car parts NW is right down in Renton and may have that A/C switch. http://ocpnw.com/

JC Auto will have the part as well but it will most likely be priced closer to what you are finding on ebay.

If you are not in a hurry, send it off for a rebuild. Thats what I did. Scroll down through the vendor listings and look for Anthony Powell in the cooling and heating section.

Super nice car in a beautiful colour!

...on a side note, I believe the spare tire is (obviously) very old, but is not the factory original tire, as the Chryslers were supplied with Good Year Custom Super Cushion tires, not Firestone tires at the factory.

ABloch - thanks for the links, jeesh I never knew that old car parts NW existed. Can I go back and time and get my money back from all of those ebay purchases? Lol. Anyways, I bookedmarked all of those sites, great resources for some other items that I'm starting to identify need replacement.

David - thanks, and too bad it's not the original spare. But at least it is "Gum-Dipped"! Can't imagine mounting that thing in an emergency anyways, but great for a car show I guess.

Arland - yes, I'll search for a swap-out A/C unit or send mine off to be rebuilt depending on cost difference. Thanks for reaching out though, much appreciated!

By chance, though, the correct Good Year ones are still manufactured if you ever want to purchase them.
