Besides SMS.

I was looking at Factory OEM parts but I see there is 1957-58: http://www.factoryoemparts.com/1957-1958-dodge-coronet-2-door-hardt...

I would want a lighter blue anyway.

I am not sure but I think all or most of these vendors get their carpets from the same source.

Which might be Auto Custom Carpets (ACC). I ended up ordering from Stock Interiors and when the box arrived it was an ACC box. I ordered the carpet as

ORDER DETAILS:
Item: 12458
Quantity: 1
Description: Dodge Desoto '55-'56 Cut and Sewn Carpet 4 Door Sedan
Color: 552-Bright Blue 80/20 Loop
Price (each): 152.95
Item Total: 152.95

The ACC slip in the box says 1955-56 Desoto Fireflite. I have it laid out in the family room (wife is away). Looks good. Hope it fits.

Not sure what the little flappy bits are on the rear carpet.

I called both ACC and Stock Interiors today. ACC confirmed that they do not have a 56 Dodge template. Stock Interiors could not explain why they say the carpet that I ordered was ordered as " Dodge Desoto '55-'56 Cut and Sewn Carpet 4 Door Sedan". Before I called I checked the AMA specs on the 56 Desoto and 56 Dodges. Obvious wheelbase differences. Also width differences.

Stock Interiors told me to try the two pieces in the car first. But not to cut anything. IF I absolutely don't think that it will work or that I can't make it work, as long as it is not cut, they said that I could return it. Presumably for a full refund (not sure about the shipping costs).

I plan to at least see if I can make it work. That means getting the car out of the garage and removing the front seat entirely. At least the weather is supposed to be good for the next week or so.

Fantastic day weather-wise. Got the car out did a few things and then pulled the front seat out (it was easier with the frame skirting removed). One guy can get the seat out (with the base removed) but two guys would be easier.

Couldn't wait to finish with the sound deadening and decided to trial the new carpet in the car.

Tried both the front and rear pieces. The front piece is too wide at the doors (easy enough to cut it) but it is too narrow up at the firewall which makes no sense. The area around the gas pedal is weird and the heel cushion is too far to the center.

The rear piece is a bit off at the front, it generally too wide and is too long (because of the Desoto's longer wheelbase). I can trim the width and even the length (the ball of paper and the sharpy pen are sitting over where the floor board "tangs" would catch the rectangular holes in the front frame of the rear seat bottom.

Over all, I don't think I can make it work with out a bunch of patching. (Even the seat mounting slits are off).

Mine fit better than that Dave. The Dodge chassis is the same as the Plymouth so you might want to get one for a Plymouth instead. But there were still issues with it. I believe I ended up turning the rear carpet around backward because it fit better that way, And then I cut those extension pieces off and stuffed them underneath in the corners to fill it out properly. The middle front never did fit well. It just has too much material there. I need to cut it and pull it tight but I never did. The Item number was 10650 so you can compare that to yours. It was supposed to be for a '55-'56 Belvedere in the Aqua/Turquoise color, 80/20 Loop.

Thanks for the reply, comments and photos Nathan. I will talk to ACC about 10650 tomorrow. One of my car neighbours stopped by this afternoon and mentioned that his neighbour is a carpet wizard and he could probably fix my "Desoto" issues. So I might not have to send the carpet back. Maybe.

I called ACC this AM. They no longer have listing or "mould" for a 10650 product. The only 1956 Chrysler product they list is the 55-56 Desoto Fireflite.

So I called Stock Interiors (again) and went through the whole story (again). They told me to send photos. So I composed an email with the story in writing and attached photos. I told them that I like the product and was still willing to try to work with it (somehow) rather than start with flat carpet that I would have to cut, etc.

Not sure where this will end up.

Such BS! This isn't molded at all! I wish it were, so it would fit better. Stock Interiors still lists it on their website, which is the company that I bought it through.

http://www.stockinteriors.com/CutSewnCarpet.asp?Itemid=10650&MakeId...

But really, it is only a little better than just cutting up a flat roll of carpet. I almost wish I had done that so I could have one piece from front to back.

I told the little girl on the other end that it wasn't moulded but that went right over her head. I said that it was Cut and Sewn. Still no recognition of what I was saying.

Interesting that Stock Interiors lists the 56 Plymouth and ACC doesn't.

Big favour: Could you measure the width of your Plymouth at the base of the B-pillars and up across the interior firewall? (that might be difficult).

Sure, I will do that tonight when I get home, as much as I can with the seat in there. But I'm sure the width is the same since they are both 74.6" wide, but the dodge has a 5" longer wheelbase 120" compared to 115", and the outside length is 7" longer. So there may be some lengthwise gap under the seat if you use this carpet.

In the absence of new data, I decided to keep the rear section and modify it on my own (because it will mostly be cutting) *BUT* that I would send the front section back to Stock Interiors because it needed MORE material up in those toe kick areas by the firewall. I "Marked up" the front section accordingly with Duct tape, showing them (ACC) where the material needs to be added. I also requested that the heal pad be moved 1.25" to the left.

Yesterday I took the front section in the original ACC box down to my mail drop in Point Roberts WA and then emailed Stock Interiors (to whom I had spoken about this already) and told them that it was ready for pick-up. I phoned Stock Interiors this morning (they are 3 hours ahead of me) to check that they had received my email. The answer was yes and that a "Call Tag" for UPS to pickup the box had been issued. I phoned the mail drop and told them that the Call Tag was in progress. She told me that when UPS comes to pick it up, she would phone me. That was still this morning. Early afternoon I got a call from the mail drop. UPS has taken my box. Yippee.

So I presume that I will see a fixed/new front carpet piece back to me within 2 weeks or so.

In the meantime, I have plenty of things to do (weather not being too too cold).

I got the revised front carpet piece back sometime before Nov. 20th (so maybe about 2.5 weeks all together). It came without the "jute" (mixed fiber felt) padding glued on, it fact they gave me two pieces, one trimmed and one partially trimmed. Initially I was p'd off at that but I shortly realized that not having the padding attached was a good thing. It will allow me to manipulated the front carpet piece easier without it. And I can choose were I want padding (or not).

I finally finished the sound proofing enough that I could trial the new carpet piece again. Note the rear section was not modified by ACC (because I didn't send it to them) - I will do that here.

Here are some photos from today. The front sides are much better. Not sure if they moved the heal pad very far (or far enough) (I've posted the before photo as well as the after). I see that compared to the previous photos from late October, I have the rear portion of the carpet laying about 4 or 5 inches further to the front than I had it before. In any case, the little flappy wings and the slits and the holes in the rear section will soon be made to disappear.

Yep. It's better and since it cost me nothing more than my initial payment, I have to be happy.

That said, it's still going to need some "adjustment" (read: "Cutting and trimming"). At least I didn't have to add material.

And having the padding separate this round, seems at this point to be an advantage over the first glued to the carpet round.

We'll see

I got the rear seat out of the basement today and wire-wheeled off the rust that was on the bottom, prepping for paint of the seat frame with Tremclad semi-gloss black rust paint. After the seat was cleaned (but not painted), I got the old dear (56 Dodge) out of the garage and into the last of the sunshine for awhile and put the seat into the back and then marked where it landed on the X-mat with felt pen. I will use that as my guide when placing and trimming the rear carpet piece.

I see that I don't have to be concerned about the "wings" on the rear piece (which was designed for the wider 55-56 Desoto) *BUT* I might have a problem at the "corner" by the Desoto wings. The carpet piece has a pretty much right angle corner whereas the seat is actually a nice gentle curve. I will have to try the rear carpet piece back in the car and see how it compares to the felt-pen marks on the X-mat. *IF* I am lucky, I might just be able to pull the carpet back enough, e.g. just past those permanent seat-location "tangs" and avoid the potential curve versus 90 deg corner issue. Tomorrow (it got too cold out today).

Yesterday, I stopped at the point when it was getting too cool (dewy) to have the car out of the garage. Before I quit, I marked the location of the forward edge of the rear seat bottom on the X-mat:

Today was nice enough that I got the car out again and tried the rear carpet piece in the car. I found that I could pull it back far enough that it misses the conflict at the back while still maintaining and least 4 inches of "overlap" under the front carpet piece. I could put it back a bit more from where it is shown in the photos below which are taken at a point where there is *just* no gap between the carpet and where the seat bottom will sit.
"
Bottomline (no pun intended): The rear carpet piece is going to work fine even though it was supposed to be for a "Dodge Desoto"

You're welcome.

In case anyone finds this in the future and assumes that the "1955-56 Dodge Desoto 4dr Sedan" Cut and Sewn carpet set fit a 120" wheelbase American 56 Dodge right out of the literal box, please remember that the front piece was too narrow in the upper footwell area and that the heel pad was not far enough to the left. I brought the issue up to Stock Interiors/ACC and they were good enough take the carpet back (at their cost), fix the issue and reship (at their cost). As far as I can tell they made a completely new front piece.

This marked-up photo of the first front carpet piece shows where the issues were:

Based on this photo of a 55 Chrysler St.Regis, I can see the way the wheel wells intrude into the cabin and therefore why the ACC Desoto carpet had the narrow bits that had to be "adjusted" for the 56 Dodge application.

The St. Regis carpet (must be aftermarket. Note how they laid the carpet OVER the dust shield)

The carpet material is ACC's 80/20 loop and the hard plastic is the heal pad.

I have been making some progress on the installation of this ACC/Stock Interiors carpet.

The other day I fitted and glued the "padding" to the passenger side front foot well.

Yesterday I finished off the inspection panel install with sealing around the steering column with "Big Stretch" brand caulking and poly-foam backer "rod". Today I installed the OE dust shield with some silicone caulking and two old No. 14 screws (and trim washers) and two new ones (I only ever had two). Then I used some red (just had some) duct tape to seal the dust shield to my added X-mat High Profile insulation.

Then I installed the left front (driver's) foot well carpet padding with double-sided carpet tape (I don't want to hinder access to the inspection panel in the future - should the need arise). Then I re-fitted the carpet over the padding. There are a couple of puckers to deal with and I need to adjust the carpet a bit more before I finalize the position. I know that I will want the front carpet piece to be removable so I am not going to trap it under the front seat mounts (will need to cut the carpet in a square "U" around the mounts). Once I am happy(ish), I plan on using double-sided carpet tape to hold on the carpet in place (plus the front firewall carpet capturing plate and the door sill plates).

Funny story: When I got in the car to drive it around the block (still sitting on a plastic milk crate for now) to put the car back in the garage for the night, as I drove off, I thought something was "weird". Yes it was, it was *MUCH* quieter than it ever had be before. I guess my efforts have paid off (than and the carpet).

Here is what it looks like at this point (still loose) (NOTE: I have a NOS gas pedal to install before this is over):

Yesterday was a great day and I could finally get the car outside and open the doors on both sides at once so I could play with the carpet, getting it in position. I worked hard on getting my two piece Stock Interiors/ACC 1956 "Dodge Desoto" carpet set (which turned out to be for a 55/56 Desoto Fireflite 4 dr sedan) into its final positions and then starting the trimming (because the Desoto is so much wider) and the cutting of holes for the front seat mount and the new shoulder belt outboard bottom mount and the seat belt receiver. I struggled to get things symmetrical but eventually realized that there were too many hard points, i.e. the steering column hole, the gas pedal hole that were set by ACC (even after they redid the front piece) and subsequently the headlight high beam switch and the windshield washer pump pin, that symmetrical was not going to happen. Won't really be an issue because the seat will hide the things that aren't symmetrical anyway.

I used an awl to line up the sill plate in its proper position (using the awl through the screw holes, into the holes in the rocker panel) and then I market the inner edge of the sill plate with masking tape. I ended up trimming about 1.5" off the front of the rear section in the right front passenger door area and a bit more in the rear of the rear section by the right rear passenger door area. I am targeting to have about 1" of carpet (with no padding) under the inner edge of the sill cover.

Today was another great weather day so I carried on, starting work at the left rear, doing the same thing with the sill plates and masking tape I had done yesterday with the right rear and then cutting the carpet (leaving about 1" under the inner edge of the sill plate.) Then I got brave and trimmed the outer edges of both sides of the front piece of carpet. Obviously checking and re-checking to make sure that I am not cutting too much.

Then I used my awl and some masking tape to locate the seat bracket holes and the two seat belt bolt holes. I realized yesterday that the awl wasn't going to work well enough to create the bolt holes in the carpet. This morning at breakfast with some retired colleagues (engineers like myself), I solicited suggestions on how to make the holes in the carpet. They suggested a hot spike (big nail) to melt through the carpet and padding (for the middle seat belt bolts) and a hollow hole punch. I liked the second suggestion and will be going out tomorrow to buy a set of these:

Hey, soon I might have a real front seat and I can retire the milk crate and foam pad and go for a real drive!

didn't read all the above and may have been suggested before . if one would buy roll carpet , they can take it to a good carpet shop to be edged sewn and where
ever else , after marking everything yourself as to what one needs . some places will even help one install it . last time i inquired , edge sewing was @ 3.00$ a ft. --------------------------------------------later

Thanks Sven. LOL. I am slow and thoughtful because I am concerned about making a mistake that I can't fix, i.e. cutting too much carpet.

I could have bought roll carpet from ACC/Stock Interiors at the time, but I decided against it because I thought that their pre-made "cut and sewn" two piece set was going to save me time. I would never have been able to figure out or execute the way they constructed the carpet to accommodate the rear of the transmission hump.

With one exception, everywhere that I have cut carpet will be covered and held by the sill plates so I am not worried about the edge unraveling. The exception is at the front of the passenger side seat mount. I had to notch the carpet there to go around the "foot" of the seat mount. I might use a hot glue gun to "fix" the edge there.

Off to buy the hole punch(es).

David, it is with a certain amount of trepidation that I hesitate to pass on an alternate procedure considering my recent mis-post and screw ups caused by having to many seniors moments.

Ray: Thanks for the suggestion. Looks good (if not a little scary - flames being flames and such).

Unfortunately, your email came in while I was out buying the punch set. I just bought a larger punch set that goes from 1/8" to 3/4". I'm going to try it this afternoon.

LOL. Nothing better than fire. Well at least heat.

I cut a 7/16" punch out of the package and tried it on the carpet. Absolutely nothing. I then tried it on a sheet of paper. Yay! It cut a hole but just barely.

Plan B: Find the biggest landscaping spike that I have in my "Nails and Screws" box and borrow my wife's Creme Brulee kitchen torch. Dangerous little thing.

The spike was about 10" long and 7/16" in diameter. Heated the last inch or so, not even until it was red or anything, just so it was smoking a bit. Under those conditions I could do 2 or 3 of the 4 seat bracket bolt holes (4 per side) - so two heatings for those (per side).

For the larger seat belt anchor bolts (7/16") diameter, I needed to heat the spike twice per hole to make sure that I was melting everything (including padding for the inboard holes). Still pretty easy and because the heat seals the carpet (as others have suggested) there is less risk of unraveling near those holes (not that the risk was high).

Upwards and on-wards. Now I can double-sided tape the rear section of the carpet to the floor. Not sure if I will do much at the front.

The Bad and the good:

Basically a month later (+ 1 week), I finally finalized the installation of the front carpet. Even having ACC/Stock Interiors rebuilt the 55/56 Desoto Fireflite front section did not yield a perfect fit. I struggled and tugged and prodded to get to a compromise between using the ACC/Stock interiors steering column and gas pedal holes and the fitment at the left and right edges. In the end, I had to cut and sew a dart on the left side at the rear edge, near the hump and use some upholstery "swirl" pins to hold the front section to the rear section in strategic locations (hidden under the seat). One area that still need attention is a couple of "Desoto" cuts in the rear section that I thought would be under the front seat and therefore didn't get too excited about. Wrong. They aren't hidden (enough) and I will have to "fix" them. Might have to bring in my professional carpet laying neighbour to help.

Anyway, carpet got fixed in place and I installed the front seat for the first time since October 31st, 2017 or so. Yippee.

I bought ACC carpet from JC Whitney for my '55 Plymouth. Unfortunately, I had already cut the rear section to fit before I realized the front section did not fit at all properly over the transmission tunnel. By then, for better or worse I owned that carpet.
