Got to admit.

I just side by side shopped...

The Amazon prime vs Summit vs Rockauto...

Litterally... rock auto all shipped and done was half price summit(backordered)... and nearly half amazon prime...    Dont even talk to me about summit backordering, ive waited for nearly a year on parts.

I'm a customer for life... Amazeballs...

As a professional tech I have access to wholesale, and sometimes lower, pricing. Pretty much all the guys where I work use Rock Auto for about 80% of their personal needs. You do have to keep an eye on shipping, but for the most part they beat even our local parts houses by a fair bit.

Its also nice that they offer a selection - some jobs warrant a name brand part, and some need done on the cheap.

I agree and I use them quite a bit, but be wary of sub-par parts. I have received calipers with helicoil jobs in them that leaked terribly. Returns are a pain and they won't accept any return if you aren't putting the part on the vehicle for which is was made. So if you need to make a return, be prepared to lie, or just use it as a core for a local part like I did. Chalk it up to experience. Some stuff I refuse to buy through them just because I can't trust the quality.

I buy many parts from Rockauto, and I have had only positive experiences. With the high prices for economy spare parts here in Sweden I can chose the highest quality available at Rockauto and get my spare parts cheaper even whit the import tax and VAT added.

The only thing that can be negative is that parts are stored in several warehouses and this can result in 2-3 shipping COSTs.

Yup! I also use them and have several vehicles on their rss feed (if that is the correct computer-ese) so I get emails for parts being discontinued.

R ock Auto, has Shipped incorrect parts more than once. My 60 Fury has 11X2 inch shoes. They sent me 12X3. When i triedto return them, they said their tech department stands by their Spec of 12x3 for my Fury.
Next time i ordered oil pan plugs for my big block. Not onlywas it a metric tread, but also a metric bolt head.
Im done with them.
They can keep their generous 5% Discount

my luck was good in the past but lately I got so many Chinese crap that I had to return a whole order. I don't rust my brakes to the Chinese.

I also noticed that part are not telling the country of origin anymore...

you have to be careful verifying you parts at every parts store, and country of origin, you notice we talk about not buying the cheapest economy part.

For example
I actually hate raybestos brake rotors now, I literally was going through one set a year, I switched to Wagner(even cheaper) and they are phenominal.

I was buying the professional grade raybestos rotors for my truck and they sucked. The wagners are great. Can I buy a dirt cheap rotor? Yep but I don't.

I buy from Rock Auto more times than not. For single items, I sometimes get it from Amazon Prime. Although the item is usually more expensive through Amazon, the free 2-day shipping often offsets the extra cost of the item.

I have bought parts from Rockauto more than a dozen times. Yes it pays to not order the cheapest part or you will likely get chinese rubbish.
Even with international postage, parts are about a 1/3 of what they would cost me here.
I recommend Rockauto to everyone, most don't listen and continue to pay through the nose for their parts.
Glenn.

No one mentioned the Rockauto "A B C D warehouse" scam yet? it is a rip off. try to order 3 parts from the same warehouse to safe on shipping. its almost not possible. if you found a part that was in a previous search, lets say, "warehouse A" and you add it to the shopping cart with 2 "warehouse A" items, one of the items in the cart automatically changes to B, C or D warehouse and shipping goes up. i took sreenshots of that.

i noticed that when a couple of friends and me over here in germany wanted to place a big order to safe on shipping and i sent a screenshot of my order to friend. in the end we didn't order from ***** rockauto. maybe its only something that affects overseas customers.

I must admit that i recently ordered from rockauto anyway, as the fuel pump i wanted was alot cheaper than in other places, i played around with the system a pretty long time just to find out if i can outsmart it and of course to safe a couple of bucks. so i added and deleted millions of random parts to my shopping cart until some of the parts i really wanted were all in one "warehouse". i made it to order 3 parts. too bad, without that scam my order would have been alot bigger.

Thanks' for bring that up Sid! As I buy a lot from RockAuto, I'm very aware of this and I do the fiddling with part choise and deleting/adding until the best shipping is acheived - that means that sometimes it's not possible to order certain parts, must wait until the next order.

Also, RockAuto sometimes choose to send part of a shipment with for examle FedEx, meaning that one must pay for the extra courier fees, and that the VAT/import taxes will be calculated on that total instead of the normal shipping.

I have brought this up with RockAuto customer support and they couldnt care less......

As you write, certain parts has a very good price and that's one of the reasons I still buy from them.

i didn't know that about fedex, sven. i never buy anything when the seller insists on fedex. their additional fee is rip off. however a friend told me that you do not have to pay it, they just try, upon delivery, to press a couple of extra bucks out of you. never tried as after the second time they charged me additional money i never used them again.

When RockAuto use FedEx for a delivery, then there's nothing you could do Sid - the FedEx invoice arrives promptly with the post

Read and weep

Complaint
On my last order, one fluid pump seal at a price of $2.48 was sent separately with FedEx courier, who charged SEK 116 (approx. $14) in administration fees. The import charges were totally ok, SEK 40.

Even more sad is the fact that there are no extra duties or import taxes on an item worth $2.48 (SEK 21) (limit SEK 300), though we must pay 25% VAT (in this case SEK 5.25) on the actual value + shipping costs (FedEx charged SEK 29 in VAT on their administration costs.

This means that a simple seal worth $2.48 suddenly got the administration (not import taxes) of $14 ending up at a final price of $ 16.48 just because RockAuto chose another way of transportation.

Well with all due respect, you must have approved these charges before approving the orders to be sent this way, they just don't go and remove money from your credit card unless you push the button.. There is always a choice in delivery options, if you don't like it, don't push the button. And they have no control over your country's import taxes, blame your government not Rockauto.

I don't have any problems with the import taxes (although it's theft) - the extra charges for FedEx administration does not show up when an order is placed. Those costs comes on top on the already paid shipment.

I don't think that over sea buyers can chose way of transportation, but I'll check that if I place another order.

As I remember we can chose faster or normal shipment only

It may be different to your country but I usually see about 4 different shipping options.
I never ever use FedEx or UPS, they are twice the cost and take twice as long.
Standard economy can arrive down here in 3 days.

as wizard said, the extra costs do not show up when you get the quote. thats the point, but when they ring on your door with the parts they collect some phoney "administration fee" and thats about $15! that is unlawful and unfair for their competitors. a buddy told me that nothing happens if you refuse to pay as they know what they are doing is not correct. they must state the full shipping costs when you request them and they give no hint about additional costs, as that bs fee is always the same, there is no reason not to include it in the original quote. i'm surprised that this bs still works after 5+ years.

I fully understand what you are dealing with because we in Alaska have a similar problem. We are treated like a foreign country and some companys just double the shipping rates. If we ask them to use the postal service because it is cheaper, they just say no we only use UPS or fedEx. At least we don't have to pay import taxes.

For importing stuff, Switzerland is the worst country on earth. When I carry items with me when I personally cross the border back home, I have a free quote of about USD 300.-. Above there is a sales tax of 7.7% this year.

Absolutely different is the story when I order something online. The tax free threashold for the postal (or Fexex, UPS, TNT and so on) way is about USD 64.-. But that's with the shipping costs included. And furthermore: these companies all charge another USD 20.- for processing the goods through (additional service fee) the custom as well.

As for both cars (the Beast and the Letter) I had to pay taxes for the price of the car plus the shipping cost (plus 3% of this price prior the price with the taxes because it's a car or car related parts).

Not long ago... the National Council (or Federal Council) declined a motion to rise that threashold to USD 300.-. https://www.parlament.ch/en/%C3%BCber-das-parlament/parlamentsw%C3%B... not more about Swiss politics anymore, I promise

Happy Restoring!

Dieter

BTW: that's the reason some Swiss took a German postal address as well (a friend or family member living in Germany)... or professional companies were erecting a business out of that fact.

really? the tax free limit is about $20-$25 in germany, SHIPPING INCLUDED. and thats not enough, if someting seems to be declared too cheap, they guess the price an charge you tax/customs based on their estimate.

Guys, I thought I could order some clips from RockAuto...... guess not

I placed an order for other parts and tried to wiggle in those frigging clips in a combined shipping - no way. If I order like 10 of each the shipping goes up even more.

I bought the clips (10 of each) in Sweden instead for a lower cost than the RockkAuto shipping ??!!??

Oh, and of course, with the high shipping costs in this example I would have to pay import taxes of 25% on the total.........

Conversation between me and RA customer services;

Questions;
Hi, yesterday I tried to place an order of some molding clips. First I searched for them and found them under Tools & Universal parts.

I wanted 10 of 2 types, but I was very surprised to see that the shipping costs was hilariously high, so, as a test I indicated 1 of each – still the shipping cost was unacceptably high.

Then I placed an order of other items and thought that I was able to find a combined shipping for the clips – absolutely not possible. So, I cancelled the clips and bought them more expensive here in Sweden, but still under the shipping cost quoted.

If I would have placed an order of the clips from you, then I would have to pay additional import charges on the total, in this example 41.44 X 25% = $51.80.

This makes me wonder if this is an error or, perhaps a policy?

Answer;
I've confirmed that the weight and dimension of the part numbers that you mentioned are correct. The shipping charge quoted for International Economy shipping via FedEx (which is the cheapest available shipping option for those particular part numbers) is correct.

Your previous order, 77788158, was shipped via a different method, DHL Global Mail. This method is a consolidated method that takes much longer and is a much cheaper method.

The clips in question, however, are stocked in a location where this cheaper shipping method is not available.

Conclusion;
CCL

But, the true problem here is FedEx - obviously they made an agreement with RockAuto.
Hopefully this will help some of our members to consider which parts to buy and which not to buy from RockAuto.

Also, please remember the warehouse tap dance as presented by Sid above.........

these 10 or 20 moulding clips fit into a padded envelope, actual shipping is around 3-5 USD.
