Expert 5K+ Posts: 7395 Location: northern germany | can you run a 3 bolt sprocket on a single bolt cam? the pin seems to be in the same location so if the center bore has the same diameter it should work. anybody knows the answer?

Expert Posts: 3776 Location: NorCal | The big difference is in the way the sprocket indexes on the front cam journal. The single-bolt sprocket indexes off of the front journal snout and the dowel pin; the front journal face is flush with the block. The 3-bolt front journal is wider and the face extends about 1/8" from the block; the block side of the sprocket has a counter bore that indexes on the outer diameter of the journal and the dowel pin. Location: North Australia | Sid, are you changing out the timing gear in the Fury? If so be aware of the new cam sprocket touching the block. This happened to me when I installed a new (single bolt) set in my 413, with the original cam. There was an embossed number on the back side of the cam sprocket which touched a bulge on the front of the block (oil gallery I think). It sounded like a bad big end and destroyed the new timing set. I purchased another different brand set to fit to the motor and had to machine the back-side of that cam sprocket to make clearance, as it was very close also. Steve.
