In the sense of what the knobs should do.

I think I know that:

1. the left outer pointier knob is ON/OFF volume and
2. the left bigger flatter knob should be tone and
3. the right outer pointier knob is tuning BUT
4. I don't know what the right bigger flatter knob does.

Can somebody school me?

From the 56 Dodge Accessories catalogue (no help to me though)

My actual Aurora Design converted AM/FM/USB/Aux/BlueTooth radio:

The knob on the right, behind the tuner knob should be the fader control. It adjusts the balance between the front and rear speakers if you have the rear speaker option. If you don't, the speaker socket should be jumpered out.

Does your radio actually work?

Thanks for that. Now I know.

I bought the (9 tube 914 HR (?)) radio from a local 55 owner who realized that he couldn't use a 12V neg ground radio in a 6 V pos ground car. I had it converted to AM/FM/USB/iPod/BlueTooth with Aurora Design guts. I've only tried the iPod and USB inputs so far because I cannot find a 15 ft aerial cable to attach at least one of my rear fender aerials to the radio.

The radio conversion is Approved for Collector Status by our local provincial insurer.

Aurora video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kw5hNDkLEY4

Until I can find the two aerial connecting "Y" piece, I plan on hooking up the right rear antenna.

Last time he listed that, it had a BIN of $200. No thanks.

Is that originally a 914HR or just a 914? The reason I ask is that I believe "HR" was an all-transistor version with no tubes and is generally acknowledged as the world's first all-transistor car radio. The non-HR version is the same basic radio but has the tubes. It's a moot point since you've made the conversion, but just curious.

It's worth mentioning that the HR radios (made by Philco) were judged to be a failure at the time by Chrysler and were only offered for the 56 model year. In 57, Chrysler switched to “hybrid” radios, which used all tubes except for the one transistor as a final amplifier. The all-transistor radio wouldn't reappear Until 1963.

Here's a 15-foot cable for cheap. There's limited benefit in hooking up the second antenna, but you can buy a splitter to do that if you want.

here's a cheap splitter:

Here's more sizes, very cheap:

I'd love to know how well your converted radio works, especially the search tune feature.

Hmm....that made me think, and check my old posts. Not a 914 HR. Maybe 941 HR or 910 HR. (Don't ask me why I don't have photo of the markings on the case). It was a 9 tube radio and it was HR, i.e. capable of handling a HiWay HiFi record player and it is "Town and Country" ElectroTouch.

( I also have an 842 HR (non-Electro Touch that might explain my confusion - or NOT) )

The Electro-touch is working. It needed a new 167 V (??) solenoid or something but I paid for that (only about $40) so it works. I will know better when I get the aerial hooked up.

(Thanks for those antenna cable links).

As for the knobs and what they do, I forgot that Dave Homstad had sent me copies of the pages of the 910 manual. (2 below)

I was out in garage (raining) putzing with rear speaker plate install and decided to touch the tuner bar while I was playing tunes off the USB stick. To my surprise, each touch resulted in moving to the next song on the USB stick. No going backward though (as with using the tuner knob). I guess based on the first paragraph on page 3 of the 910 manual, that makes sense.

Emailed the guy who did the radio conversion and he said that if I touch the ElectroTouch tuning bar twic real quick while using the USB, it will go back one song. One touch on the bar = one sound forward.

He also confirmed that once I am running an iPod through the AUX input (via the head phone jack on the iPod) the control is all by the iPod. Hmm... That requires further experimentation.

Hooked up one of my two rear fender antenna by buying a 4 ft antenna cable at Canadian Tire and cutting it and splicing in 14 ft (too much for the long term) of RG59 coax cable; butt connecting the core wires and the shielding wires (after twisting them together) at both ends of the splice. Pretty much a bodge hack job but it works for now until I buy a professionally done cable.

Both the AM and FM bands work and the ElectroTouch seeks the next station very nicely, thank you very much.

Yippee!

*OR* OE cable as it turns out.

Thanks Marc. Luck was with me and I won the auction on that OE aerial cable this AM. (Yippee!)

Now I will be able to properly hook up my OE twin antennas with a proper OE cable.

This afternoon, I was out at my car finalizing the rear speaker install clean up (putting tools away, etc) and my neighbour came by to get the "tour" of the radio. I explained the AM, the FM, the USB and the iPod. He says "Too bad, it doesn't do BlueTooth". AH HA!! I say "It does do Blue Tooth!". It took me a minute or so to remember the Aurora video and figure out which knob had to be twisted (the volume) to make the radio aware of the need for BlueTooth. I did that (twisted the volume real fast) and then the nice lady came on and said "Ready for Pairing". My neighbour set up his phone to pair and in few seconds they (the radio and his iPhone) connected (I think the lady said "Paired") and the pilot light came on blue. He played a few tunes (Van Morrison) while we chatted. Sounded good (needed more volume though than the FM).

When he shut off the phone the radio went back to FM (where we started) but real loud (so I turned down the volume). Thereafter, the radio kept looking for Bluetooth connections (judging by the blue light even though it was playing FM which is red or orange).

Oh and I got the rear speakers installed fully after lunch. The big right hand knob on the radio is the fader (front to rear) so I can adjust where I want the bias (one mono 6 x 9 in the dash and the two 6 x 9s doing stereo in the rear parcel tray).

Pretty fantasic.
