The 58 Plymouth is a 2 door hardtop and the 58 Dodge is a 4 door sedan.

The Plymouth wheelbase was 118" wheelbase while the Dodge was 122". So the Dodge (Coronet, Royal, Custom Royal) frame is 4" longer between the front and rear axles.

In the body the extra 4" was in the rear seat floor.

No interchange between the two.

Direct interchange is '57 Plymouth V-8 models except convertible and Suburban, and if your car is a six cylinder, the same, but must be six cylinder equipped.

Is this still true if the 58 Dodge is a Canadian Dodge, i.e. Plodge?

:)

The "Plodge" was built on the Plymouth chassis and used the Plymouth body with a Dodge front end. So it would be an easy switch between Plymouth and Plodge but not Dodge and Plodge.

Sorry, I am confused a little, (not that Mother Chrysler would ever do that of course), it is my understanding (graciously subject to correction) that some Canadian Dodge models where real Dodges either imported or assembled here. This happened somewhere around the Royal models I think, but my eyes start to glaze over right about here. So would the real Dodges (not Plodges) in Canada have the longer Dodge frame? Thanks.

Yes, the top of the line US Dodge was built in Canada with some models (convertibles, wagons & the pre-1955 hardtops) imported. These Dodges used the same body and frame as the US models they were based on. From 1942 to 1948 the Custom was built in Canada, 1949-1953 the Coronet (although the 1949-50 models were marketed as Custom), 1954 was the Royal, 1955-59 Custom Royal and 1960 the Polara. For 1961 the Polara was replaced at Dodge-DeSoto-Valiant dealers by the Chrysler Windsor and the DeSoto Adventurer by the Chrysler Saratoga. They also gained the Chrysler New Yorker.

No 880 series Dodges in Canada, and the American Dodge moved down in price to the point that by 1972 the big Dodge sold in Canada was essentially the U.S. Dodge, along with a Canada-only Polara Special with Fury I upholstery.

Someone will correct me (I am sure) but I think the answer is YES as long as the wheelbases are the same (e.g. 122 inches). The convertibles probably got a stiffening "X" member.

Wagon specs (122 in wheel base too): http://www.automobile-catalog.com/auta_details1.php

For Dodge frames :

1. 1675 809 - Coronet V8 / Custom Royal - Convertibles (with X member )
2. 1734 573 - Coronet 6 sedans and hardtops - also used by Plymouth 6 wagons
3. 1734 574 - Coronet V8 / Royal / Custom Royal sedans, hardtops, wagons - also used by Plymouth V8 wagons and Firesweep wagons

DeSoto Firesweep sedans and hardtops used a frame not shared with any other make (1734 575)

The 1959 DeSoto Firesweep and Chrysler Windsor shared frames :
1. 1940 948 - Wagon (also used on Plymouth V8 wagons and 122" wheelbase Dodge sedans and hardtops)
2. 1940 950 - Sedans and hardtops
3. 1940 951 - Convertibles

In 1958 although both the US-built Windsor and Firesweep were on a 122" wheelbase the two had different frames -

1958 DeSoto Firesweep -
1. 1829 951 - Convertible
2. 1829 749 - Sedans and hardtops
3. 1829 750 - Wagons (also used on Plymouth V8 wagons and Dodge Royal / Custom Royal sedans and hardtops)

1958 US-built Chrysler Windsor -
1. 1829 958 - Sedans and hardtops
2. 1829 959 - Wagons
Chrysler Windsor did not offer a convertible in 1958
